I'm reading that the Greens are calling for a new tax on the wealthiest 1% to fund housing insulation and renewable energy. Is there a reason new houses are not required to be built fully insulated? Seems a sensible option?

It's to retro fit insulation on the older housing stock. New builds already have pretty good standards when it comes to insulation.

New houses are required to be fully insulated. Well, to get sign off from building control they must be. Unless the planning permission was granted several years ago.

New houses are required to be draught-proof. They are also required to have constant trickle ventilation through a vent in every window. Quite how a house is supposed to meet both of these requirements is not clear.

assumption is whatever is bottom of today's priority list is worth paying tax for. So to add something to the list, you need new taxes.

You may think the thing at the bottom today is not worth the tax. That's a different argument. And one to have with the Tories...

Not at all. There is nothing more important than fighting climate change. The government spends loads of money on things that are far less important. Unfortunately they will have to go. Everyone needs to make sacrifices to save the planet.

New houses are built fully insulated. They have to meet the building code.

It’s just a shame that the building code does not also include fitting solar panels and batteries as standard.

I imagine that the proposed level is to get older properties up to current code.

New houses being built right NOW are NOT to a high spec insulation.

Thank David Cameron as he allowed relaxation of the rules after lobbying and Conservative Party funding from House builders.

Same house builders who last year tried pushing back on EV chargers as standard equipment in a new build.

It's a disgrace. Buy a new build today and it's not high enough spec for Heat Pumps to be efficient.

Better ways to fund Solar is damned site more bang for the buck, in regards to running costs and Climate.

I don't worry about over insulation while heating the house for FREE for 4 months of the year.

Insulation is not cost effective for me and the basic is plenty.

Solar could be 100% self-funding with Government backed Credit Union style funding based on 15p/kwh payback until investment is covered.

I've contacted 3 main Parties with details and not a single response.

Would you not like to buy electricity from yourself at 15p until the initial cost is covered?

I did at 7p/kwh and took 6yrs to pay itself back.

Tory government don't want people to have efficient insulation. They prefer everyone to spend more on energy so that they can (a) collect more taxes to embezzle (b) make money from their stock holdings in energy companies (c) route more public money to energy companies who pay them as "advisors" and "non-executive board members".

Apart from the 20% VAT, which is offensive in having to pay when buying renewables - they won't make much tax on my £200 per year energy bill..

Why not build houses with internal walls made out of bricks, surely that would help keep the heat in a house better than the current plasterboard walls.

Insulated plasterboard is best thing since sliced bread.

Bricks are cold, dense and can be damp. Stud wall with insulation or Insulated plasterboard is the way.

Don't touch cavity wall insulation, instead dry line the inside of external walls with insulated walling.

No damp trapped in cavity and easy to install and skim.
