does anyone believe this budget is good?

during a cost of living crisis and spiralling inflation, Truss + Kwarteng shat out a budget that hugely favours the rich. They also removed the cap on bankers' bonuses. And they refused to institute a windfall tax on energy companies who have been milking us dry + making out like bandits.

Millions will likely suffer under this budget. The pound has fallen off a cliff. And the IMF have gone so far as to rebuke this madness.

Really, does anybody here support all this?

I dunno if I’m being stupid, but why is giving the guys at the top a 5% (6% really) tax break help?

Trying to understand. I’m a simple guy. Won’t they just take that extra 5% and buy more properties to rent to poor people? Which they’ve conveniently cut stamp duty for too

Or they’ll just put it in investments/stock or something?

Part of me thinks, I’m an idiot, this must be happening for a reason. It’s not legal, in 2022, to so obviously just steal from the poor and give it to the rich. Not possible, someone would step in.

Am I an idiot?

Where ever I lay my hat

Politically it was way off the mark in failing to address the cost of living crisis for those in need while benefiting those at the top. Economically, well a run on the pound and a collapse in gilt prices leading to a risk of failure for our pension funds and forcing a massive intervention by the Bank of England would suggest it isn't going well. I suspect though they will try and tough it out and double down based on their ideological belief in trickle down economics.

Why do you support a grossly unfair budget that is set to fuck over many people while making the richest richer during a cost of living crisis? (Also a budget that is causing our eceonomy to melt down so badly both the IMF & the Bank of England were already forced to intervene.)

You mean civil servants who've not seen their office for two years? Doctors who'd rather be at their villa in Tuscany than see patients?

Nope certainly not happy. I understand that even with the change from 20p to 19p can be seen as unfair as it means the more you earn the more you gain but I was totally shocked by the 45p rate being abolished. I genuinely thought you were thinking more about what you would do with the money to help. That was the reason for the second question and feeds into something I have been considering.

I have been looking for a way to contribute towards energy bills for those that really need it. I'm no millionaire, I am fortunately comfortable and thought it would be easy to find something setup to help, I think that was being optimistic.

I was hoping something existed that would allow donations anonymously, that would allow contribution to either a whole payment or into a payment pot that can be shared.

Can't find anything close to this.

Come on buck, say something ‘controversial’ and edgy to back up your claims this is a great mini budget, you can do it

He's as happy as a pig in shit..

Does your pal also have empathy for normal people?

Why would you ask that?

If I was a millionaire, I would be unhappy getting richer while normal people were suffering.

What would you do in his shoes?

He wouldn't celebrate. He'd be unhappy at the misfortune of others.

Again, not hard to figure out.

Exactly this.

Have empathy for other humans.

Besides, all I did here was ask a question, not sure why you got so upset about it.

It's what he does on here. He asks laughably bad attempted gotcha questions then seems surprised/irritated if things don't work out.

Ah. That explains the weirdness.

That is just rude, no weirdness here.

I wanted to understand what you were thinking more clearly, hence my question.

You answered, I have now got a clear picture of what you meant.

No offense intended. I was just confused by your line of questioning.

Maybe the local food banks will be doing something for people in your area?

The local ones here give support other than just food.

I haven't made any decisions on who to vote for, and why would I given that there isn't likely to be a general election for two years? The Tories have been totally incompetent in their management of the country's finances, but it's not going to help the country's finances to vote for an alternative party that wants to spend even more.

These tax cuts amount to a spending increase. At least labour would spend that money on improving the situation rather than the top 1%'s bank balance.

"I dunno if I’m being stupid, but why is giving the guys at the top a 5% (6% really) tax break help?

Trying to understand. I’m a simple guy. Won’t they just take that extra 5% and buy more properties to rent to poor people? Which they’ve conveniently cut stamp duty for too

Or they’ll just put it in investments/stock or something?

Part of me thinks, I’m an idiot, this must be happening for a reason. It’s not legal, in 2022, to so obviously just steal from the poor and give it to the rich. Not possible, someone would step in.

Am I an idiot? "

Govt give tax cuts = more money retained the richer you are

BoE worried about inflation having more money sloshing about might cause so raise interest rates = rich people put money into savings with higher rates and invest in funds buying Govt debt which just started paying far higher returns thanks to higher interest rates.

The rich get richer. The poor get distracted by what they are getting (while ignoring how the wider economic impacts will negate any tax/NI they now get to keep).

The Tories have run out of state assets to sell to bail themselves out. So they are just letting themselves and chums stick their hand in the till until closing time.

Again, sorry if I’m being dumb, and this is legal?

Part of me thinks that if they really are just putting their hands in the till, shouldn’t there be someone around to stop that? Aren’t there regulators or something to stop this happening? Anti-corruption measures?

That’s what I don’t get. I feel like the public are being bent over and fucked, and the police aren’t around to stop it.

Not being stupid at all. You absolutely would hope and expect the laws of this country to protect us citizens from govt corruption but alas, no! Just look at all the shit pulled by Johnson and pals. They fleeced this country (us) out of £billions in plain sight. Many of us were shouting about it but the Faily Heil readers and flag shaggers dreaming about nothing but Brexit told us to shut up.

The only thing we do agree with was the reversal of that NI increase. It was appalling to put that in place when the government knew full well it was going to get lots of extra tax from fuel and energy going up.
