Never understood what the fuss was about the poll tax.

It is the fairest tax of all, more people in a house use more services therefore should pay more. Simplest way is to charge each person.

Me neither.

When it came in, I was 21 and still living at my mother's house, along with my two brothers. Mum was paying £980, and us three, all over 18, were paying nothing. The poll tax seemed like a much fairer idea to me.

Then we got the bills. All 4 of us now had to pay £1140. I don't know how they managed to calculate that, but I can see why some people got angry about it.

I think that the Poll Tax riots were just an excuse for people to protest that they had enough of the Conservative Govt - specifically had enough of Maggie T.

I can see similar widespread protests coming up unless Truss suddenly becomes all Socialist in mindset and thinks about ordinary people.

Feels like much bigger reasons for protests now. Millions are about to struggle seriously.

Well the Council tax is basically our version of what other countries call Property tax.

We already have income tax for individual tax. So you think 2 individual taxes are fairer..?

So a multi millionaire couple living in a million pound mansion paying less than a low income family living in a small mid terraced house with grown up children who can't afford to move out, is fairer..?

Well the Council tax is basically our version of what other countries call Property tax.

It isn’t though is it…

One of my biggest gripes about properties and taxes in the U.K. is that aside from Stamp Duty, a non-resident investor can avoid U.K. taxes and generate an income in the U.K. without meaningfully contributing to the country that is enriching them.

The French have the right idea where the property tax is split into two. The property owner pays a tax (Taxe Foncier I think it is called) and the occupier of the property pays a portion (Taxe d’habitation I think it was called).

This seems a much fairer way of taxing property in my opinion especially as more and more people are living in rental properties.

I expect that you barely use any of services that the council provides so that kind of blows a hole in that argument.

How is it fair that as soon as a child turns 18 they are expected to cough up such significant amounts or their parents are?

I am band F. Happy to contribute more because I can afford it. I hope that I never require more from the council that a fraction of their spend.

Brexit impact. Covid impact. Long term fall out from banking crisis continuing. Govt and cronies stealing from public purse. Cost of living crisis driven by all of former plus war profiteering by city energy traders and oil/gas extraction companies...

It’s almost as if the Govt were pre-empting all this by trying to pass new laws/powers to prevent disruptive protest (ie proper meaningful protest).

Who’d have thought it?

No I don't think there will be and one of the biggest reasons will be people will worry about their jobs. This may seem like a silly thing to say but I know someone that went on an anti lock down march and was sacked because the company they worked for felt it brought them into disrepute and broke their moral conduct code. Back in the nineties you could pretty much protest with ammunimity, now with constant coverage and social media you are much more likely to be seen.

Gazprom turned them off supply today. Prices up again due to more open market demand.

Probably less set aside for EU and UK as they'll be helping France over Winter.

Looking great.. toasty in front of the garden incinerator with the furniture in it.

So apparently (I say apparently as I have only read one source) The EU is buying up huge quantities of LNG from China at hugely inflated prices. China has excess that it wants to offload. Guess where China got the LNG? That’s right Russia!

So the EU appear to be buying Russian gas indirectly at inflated prices compared to buying it direct from Russia.

The world has gone mad.

we've been buying russian gas indirectly from european countries for a number of years and guess what.... those countries inflate that price compared to buying it from russia

Good choice of country, Slovenia is beautiful. They are a net exporter of electricity- hydro and nuclear I’m pretty sure. Haven’t been for three years but from memory, no wind farms.

Sounds about right sadly. Even the UK have been flogging gas to the EU to help a bit. About time they sorted out the storage problems in the UK

We're transferring gas to the EU in the hope they'll let us have some back when we need it as likely you correctly said, we no longer have storage.

Only problem being, everytime the traitors of our media report it, Putin shuts off German supply further.

Net gain for winter = ZERO

Currently sat in car surrounded by gas bottles I've just picked up.
