Dying for electricity.. literally.

Seems that although the cost of energy itself is life threatening.

I have not yet seen a single news outlet suggesting what would happen during prolonged power outages such as where no electricity is imported from abroad and there is such a shortfall of gas, that generators are forced to shut down.

No mention of what provision may be required to ensure life critical systems remained powered at home and in care homes. Hospitals have battery and generators built in.

At home, the is nothing..

Mr Fun you sound like you want a doomsday scenario playing out on primetime tv.

Hold on a mo... Didn't I read a post of yours saying you sell batteries or some sort of off grid power unit?

Are you fishing for sales

Permission to speak?

These are the questions your lame government should be asking, shouldn't they?

Trust me, we are loosing power this winter, take heed or non, you can't ration what's not there to begin with and people need to WAKE UP.

People took the piss last year when I said 50% increase in April, same again in May when I said 80% in October and was telling people to lock into contracts.

In March I told Conservative candidates we should expect power restrictions or outages this Winter, they laughed. Now, there is talk of power outages and restrictions.

But, with the real risk of power outages, what are people who are life dependent on power going to do?

Has government offered alternatives such as UPS or battery backup. No, just like COVID and care homes, they'll claim it was unforseen with another public enquiry.

I'd also suggest anyone who cares about their family finding an alternative form of heat and cooking than something that relies on Mains gas or Electricity as a fall back.

Some run to the beach when the sea recedes, others take to the hills. Sod all to to do with doomsday, but a lot to do with an Autocratic leader of a country determined to make us suffer this winter.

Enjoy the surf!!

So, for those that are interested.

The issue being, the UK has no or very little gas storage. Over the last 25yrs, governments has sat back and allowed TransCo, ultimately National Grid to dismantle the UK's gas storage system and sell off the land for profit.

Miles Platting used to have Manchester's Winter storage, the gasometers were taken down, cashed for scrap then the land sold - this is now Manchester City's Etihad Stadium site car parks.

Stockport also had substantial gas storage for Winter, I used to watch them start rising from May, then slowly fall as Winter progressed. This site again cleared, land sold and is now a large retail park.

This has been repeated over and over with no-one ever questioning why we were sliding into "deliver on demand system", reliant on external factors such as Norway for daily gas needs and additional brought back in from Europe's storage during high demand to add to our own supplies.

We've left the EU, who would not hesitate to block export to the UK if it prevents their own populations from freezing.

If there is not enough gas set aside within EU storage who are currently struggling to get supplies for day-to-day plus extra for Winter for all of us, there may be reluctance to feed it back to us.

Without access to EU storage or if there is none available, Winter supply here will become an issue. Norway announced last week that they may be unable to supply us with Hydro electricity over Winter due to low rainfall, causing more stress on our supply and inevitably burning more gas to make up.

The article below highlights how desperate the UK and EU are for gas - imports from Australia.

Once that ship arrives, it's of little use to us as we have no storage, so the bulk of it will be transferred to the EU, making up their shortfall and Winter storage.

This is one of many factors that will affect us this Winter. Government planning during gas shortages is to take gas fired power stations offline.

The Rough storage facility, owned by Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, provided 70% of the UK gas storage capacity for more than 30 years before it shut in 2017 following a government decision not to subsidise the costly maintenance and upgrades needed to keep the site going.

Theres no point in panic. It just causes anxiety and chaos.

We've suffered through shortages before; water, oil, electricity, and survived by resourcefulness and cutting cloth to meet our measure. We use far too much in general anyway.

I dont know about UK but in ROI there is a 'vulnerable customer' registry for electricity and water supplies with contingencies for both.

Being prepared has nothing to do with panic.

I am far from anxious, worried or panicking, but for the sake of a £75 heater and two gas bottles I already own from a caravan - I know I can keep family warm IF there are supply issues.

Trying to give others a heads up is bugger all to do with panic. Many live in the blinkered comfort of electricity and gas is always on and available.

Reading through the lines.. this Winter is not looking great as a wobble in gas supply will certainly affect electricity and we'll see how fickle our so called "robust energy system is".

The same government, the same Energy Secretary that decided the UK doesn't need gas storage has now 5yrs later admitted he's made a huge mistake. It warrants separate post on the subject of absolute failure of this Conservative government putting UK lives at risk.

This post was that while the media concentrate on the costs of Energy for vulnerable people, but what cost to them should the energy not be available at all.

"They've scrrrewed 'im dooon."

There is a vulnerable person register here, but as Storm Arwen proved last year, when you have 100's of vulnerable people without power and some with life critical needs, they will be overwhelmed and unable to help.

These people should be being offered batteries to keep power on - that was the reason for this post.

Nothing is being done to prepare.

Energy Secretary should resign over this...

Years they told us imported gas could be an issue, so they shut down the countries largest storage facility to save a few quid.

Not only is it going to cost more, its sheer incompetence that's going to cost lives.
