Are people really stupid?

Maybe I'm missing something, but petrol and diesel prices have been falling quite quickly near me and there's a huge difference in prices.

Today I passed a station with petrol at £1.67 and diesel at 1.77, half a mile down the road Tesco filling station is queued out even though it's 10p a litre more for petrol and 15p more for diesel.

I even saw people refuelling at another place within a mile that had diesel at £1.95

Are they really that stupid ?

I mean I think there's an argument to be had for your central premise, but this isn't it.

I don't think not being equipped with data (in this case nearby prices) is stupidity. And lets say each person was to drive around the town looking for the best price, how much petrol and therefor cost would that take. And would tat lead to a net gain or loss when they filled up from the cheapest location?

I guess an argument could be made if there was an app or website which is constantly updated and you could look at to see the cheapest nearby location. But that would involve both the apps existence and the person knowing about it.

Just a few thoughts on it.

I think a stronger argument for "people are stupid" is just how many people vote against their self interest. but that's another can of worms and very opinion based.

Well I would say the stupid ones are those that go to the station selling at £1.95

I have not seen diesel at £1.77 yet though

Well I would say the stupid ones are those that go to the station selling at £1.95

I have not seen diesel at £1.77 yet though "

Petrol at EMO self service in newtownabbey yesterday was £1.67 and diesel was £1.76 when we passed by and when my son went to get diesel he said it was down to 1.75

Still not cheap but going the right direction

Maybe people should use social media to discuss petrol prices rather than conspiracy stories lol

I mean I think there's an argument to be had for your central premise, but this isn't it.

I don't think not being equipped with data (in this case nearby prices) is stupidity. And lets say each person was to drive around the town looking for the best price, how much petrol and therefor cost would that take. I guess an argument could be made if there was an app or website which is constantly updated and you could look at to see the cheapest nearby location. But that would involve both the apps existence and the person knowing about it.

Sometimes driving around is counterproductive but the wildly different prices mean people need to be more careful. There are several price comparison sites if you look

fuel card for works van can only fuel at Tesco guess that makes me stupid for waiting in the que when its busy eh ?

It’s funny, it wasn’t getting updated very quick when prices rose.. it’s much more reliable now prices are falling

Some don't care just quick and easy to go local saves time also some could be company cars so there not bothered about cost as not them paying.

… and after you’ve gone out of your way to visit a marginally cheaper station, chances are the saving is already lost in the faffing around …

It’s psychological - the way to win in your head is think about your amortised spend over a period of 12 months . Sorted

Refineries are kicking back into gear, production was almost down by 90% during the pandemic. As with other industries the supply chain was where the prices were absorbed and passed on to the consumer. Slowly the prices are going down because there is more being refined.

Petroleum isn’t really the big problem, it’s gas and some extent diesel, as they are very difficult to obtain as Russia tends to be one of the major exporters those resources into Europe.

Inflation will continue to increase because gas is used mainly in electric generation, and diesel is chiefly used by manufacturing and farming.

With most things is trying to get production into alternative energy generation for domestic, commercial and transport is hampered because we need traditional forms energy e.g. fossil fuels to support the creation of the energy systems of tomorrow.

So we are in this halfway house at the moment, we want to move forward but we cannot because the means to move forward are severely reduced.

They've also been caught with their pants down over overpriced petrol. An investigation has started with the threat of fines.

Petrol is refined here, 18% diesel manufactured and supplied by Russia. Crude prices and cost of petrol shows profiteering.

This is a biggy in which suddenly petrol is falling in price quite quickly as they're probably crapping their pants.

With food and grain shortages, I don't know how there is justification in 10% ethanol which is from fermentation of grain.

Renewables is the way but more masively more localised battery storage to store self generation or absorb over production - although this is fallacy considering that 45 to 65% of all UK electricity is from gas 24/7, so the idea there is surplus Renewables at night is false as there is never surplus at anytime of the day.

Awareness, publicity and help funding (not hand outs) with and imaginative ways to pay the funds back. I have spoken to 15 people this week who had no idea of the full benefits of Solar when used to the max potential.

Today, I've picked up the 6th 47kg LPG gas bottle, 4x required and 2x spare to cover the 2,000kwh gas (5th of an average property) I'll need in the next 12 months.

Battery storage is 40kwh, I can generate and store enough power in 4 hours full Sun to last 5 days without any further charging but as long as the Sun still rises it can be endless just by being careful with loads.

My Direct Debit has actually gone down this month to £55 based on rolling 12 months and upgrades this month will offset more than the 70% rise in October and take just 3yrs to pay back.

If the shit hits the fan this winter, my gas is in bottles already at the side of the house, batteries and Solar even in deep winter will be enough to stoll not need any Grid electricity.

I've also picked up a second 15kg Butane bottle for a fiver today and the one in the caravan is coming home for winter along with the portable gas stove.

This means if all else fails, I can invite family over to keep warm and be fed.

It's amazing how many people you speak to completely dismiss any kind of suggestion that there may be disruption to energy supplies over Winter.

"The UK will always have gas and electricity" or it "will never happen".

I hope I'm wrong but for the sake of using the renewables already installed and saving money, plus a couple extra bits taken out the caravan used for camping and a £50 gas heater. Could be the difference between freezing or living for family members.

I did try to apply for planning for a bunker bit was refuses. Should have done a Colin Furze, built it then applied!!
