Liz now was to scrap national pay agreements for regional pay where people who live in less expensive parts of the country would get paid less for the same job as someone living elsewhere

So much for “levelling up”!

If wages are suppressed in some areas of the UK that keeps property prices low as nobody could otherwise afford to buy/rent.

Conversely if London and the South East has a higher cost of living and people therefore need higher wages to buy/rent it perpetuates the higher property prices.

However, another factor is even more straightforward. If the public sector wants to compete for the best and brightest then it needs to offer a competitive package. You pay peanuts you get monkeys!

Tax Payer Alliance types complain about the cost of public sector and then also complain about quality of service. Less people on less money can only harm quality of service!

In most industries pay is dictated by supply and demand not the cost of living in the area. Government should not micro manage pay rates. That said where there are specific local recruitment problems for public sector jobs government needs to provide additional funds to attract in workers to fill those roles.

I don't see how this is actionable outside of the central government controlled civil service etc.

I can see it as step one in a series of steps which the end goal is to take away benefits and support from the most vulnerable in society that live in those same "lower cost" areas though.

The fact that she also said it would have been an Guinea pig experiment to the force it to nurses, teachers and other public sector workers made it a million times worse!

I have to say it is a tricky one.

The real living wage has different rates depend on what part of the country you live in.

There is absolutely no doubt the cost of living is higher in the South East and London and they need to be able to attract staff into the public sector and give them an incentive. However I can see how those outside of these areas would feel hard done by and rightly so.

We need to bring the cost of housing down in the South East and London but that isn't gonna happen.

Regional differences in wages already exist. People living in the north of the UK are not paid anything like those in the south. All the levelling up stuff is just crap being spouted by politicians in an effort to make people think they care, which clearly they don't. That already happens in some companies in the UK, I remember seeing a different rate of pay for Manchester airport, than Gatwick airport. That did not include London weighting either.
