I still want him properly scrutinized over spending the night with a former KGB officer the day after he was discussing Russia's actions in Crimea and novichok poisoning on our soil without any staff or security present..

I’m watching SVU, they will pick their next leader, not me. My choice would be no more than an indulgent punt. Kemi Badenoch is my preferred choice but as I said, I have no say in the matter

Which one of the candidates has the best voting record?

I looked through, they're all pretty similar, voting against gay rights, voting for austerity, voting against measures to tackle climate change etc.

The sad truth is that of all the available Conservative MP's the ones left are the only ones that have a hope of getting enough votes from Conservative members.

We couldn't give a monkeys about any of them. We'd prefer anyone but Rishi at first but if we think about it...would it really be that different if it wasn't him?

It's not just which politicians are in power that affects the running of the country. The civil service is not elected but can have a massive impact on government advice and implementation of actions. If they don't like something they can just throw blockers in the way.

TBF most will vote with the whip if they are politicians with ambition... It's what they say more that's interesting.

I'm not a Tory but have redirect for most Tory leaders... Even May and Thatcher... But none of these (nor Boris) have any real quality.

If I was a Tory I'd fear. Bthwy always used to either have a strong party or a voteable leader.... For the first time in a long time they have neither ...

Hi. You raise a very interesting and valid point. If you were to analyse how often people are logged on , how often they post and the times at which the posts are made you would find that the majority are from the left. ( the Liberal left whose liberal beliefs rapidly disappear should you disagree with anything they say) . There are at least two posters who appear to be constantly logged on and comment on every single topic

One of these five are going to run the country.

In all fairness, it doesn’t matter who we think will be the best leader, that’s the job of some party member in a month or two.

For the rest of us, it’s going to be another untrustworthy person, who is going to run the government as a political experiment in English nationalism.

Stockport

Who wants to bet that the day after the selection is made, a great pile of steaming revelations about them will be released. Whichever one gets it. Certain to be enough dirt still hidden to bring down any one of them.

Like we get a new chancellor and two days later it comes to light that he's under investigation for dodgy offshore tax arrangements that verge on money laundering (26 million vanishes from one company and 26 million appears from nowhere at another company, but obviously no connection lol).

If mordant gets it we'll find out something terrible about her military service, dishonourable discharge that was hushed up. If Sunak gets it we'll find out that he's legally american and his British passport is invalid, he's not even supposed to be in this country. Truss will be revealed to not actually be human, she's an experimental robot that escaped from a Kraftwerk tour. Tugendhat will be disqualified for shoplifting. The other one will be found to be a subversive card carrying member of the communist party. Or something like that anyway.

We might manage to get through half a dozen PM selection campaigns before Christmas. After all we've just had an entire cabinet being churned through with half of them only in the job a couple of days. Just think of the excitement of setting record after record of PMs only lasting less than a week down to less than a couple of hours!

And some posters even end up deleting their profile and re-spawning as an entirely new entity after they have soiled and embarrassed themselves so humiliatingly on here.

What does it say about the fragility of the right wing ego that they have multiple profiles to try to ensure that their most ultimately fake one (the sex profile) is not tainted by their true personality (the ever changing political profile)?

Not naming any names but I can think of two profiles that soil themselves frequently in the politics forum and one of which will almost inevitably end up deleted in the coming weeks and months as Boris Johnson’s true legacy starts to become public information and their posting history and hero worshipping of him looks at bit ridiculous.

"Echo chamber again, all left wing comments, another lack of balance. I’ve said it before, will say it again, the forum is overrun by the left Hi. You raise a very interesting and valid point. If you were to analyse how often people are logged on , how often they post and the times at which the posts are made you would find that the majority are from the left. "The sad truth is that of all the available Conservative MP's the ones left are the only ones that have a hope of getting enough votes from Conservative members.

If they don't like something they can just throw blockers in the way."

Your comment on the Civil Service is completely wrong. That is not at all how it works (except in newspaper editors minds). The CS provide impartial advice based on risk analysis and due diligence (ie if you do X then Y is likely to happen). Ministers regularly overrule or ignore this advice and plough ahead with policy X and almost always Y is the result. The politicians (all parties) then blame the CS.

You've had umpteen profiles over several years Pat, strangely enough many of which have talked of various different experiences in several fields with which you coincidentally have anecdotal evidence whatever the subject happens to be..

It's quite inspiring or perhaps a mystery how one person can be so many different profiles at the same time?

I heard the contest for Tory leader described as the "Bin fire of the vanities", on the radio. Can't remember who by; some journalist, I think.

I make no secret of my contempt for Tories. It's not prejudice - prejudice is irrational and not based on fact. I have plenty of entirely valid reasons to hold them in contempt.

That said, I'd have to go with Sunak, if I had a gun to my head - and it would take that, believe me.

Why? Well, he's the only one who is saying:

"That massive Covid bailout; that's going to have to be paid for - sooner, rather than later - if your grandchildren want to own a house without you dying and leaving one to them (which I'll tax, too).

How am I going to do that? Well, all you people who have had your slice of the pie before the poor (fuck them, right?); that's going to have to change. Sorry.

After 10+ years of austerity and a pandemic, there's nothing else I can do but tax you - if you actually want an NHS and other services and pay down the national debt a bit."

LOL Don't worry about any of that. The membership will make sure they pick another fucking half-wit.

For the Tories it's rather 'unedifying', Truss has been bettered by Sunak in both debates (according to several much more qualified political journalists than I) and she's probably been told to pull out to lessen the damage..

Twaddle (it may be there is a left leaning slant but your reasoning is twaddle).

The advent of smart phones means we are always connected.

Time of day is probably a reference to it being during work time. Again twaddle. The world has changed and time of day is irrelevant.

Self employed. Business owner. Working from home. Shift work. etc etc The standard 9-5 is a very old fashioned view of the world.

We really need to scrap FPTP, to restore democracy to the UK - and keep these arseholes (or any others) from gaining a majority in Parliament - that they do not deserve - ever again.

How can you unite a country when over half of its voters think you and your enablers are all cunts?

That's a shame as looks like neither of the 2 main parties will change it which is problematic for the 3 step plan. Last time Labour were in government they were there for 3 terms and sometimes with huge majorities. That would have been a good time to get it through, yet as far as I know it was not even attempted.

Yes and the referendum was held. For whatever reason the lib dems caved in on their original demand for PR and instead put forward the AV system as others here have said. So we are in a situation where neither the Tories or Labour are interested in PR and the lib dems sold out to AV which was rejected. Sadly this means that to get PR it is not just a case of voting out the Tories. Don't despair though as there are many many reasons to vote them out

We really need to scrap FPTP, to restore democracy to the UK - and keep these arseholes (or any others) from gaining a majority in Parliament - that they do not deserve - ever again.

How can you unite a country when over half of its voters think you and your enablers are all cunts?

Step 1. Vote for whoever can beat the Tory in your constituency.

Step 2. scrap FPTP and introduce proportional rep.

Step 3. never have a Tory led government again!

What happens when the new party that takes office also does not want to scrap FPTP

It is in the interest of every party but the tories to change it....

Have Labour said they will change it? In reality they are the only ones that can form a new government but I have not heard them say they will scrap FPTP. If they have please share as this would be a pleasant surprise

I don't know about this Labour party but they have supported electoral reform in the past.

That's a shame as looks like neither of the 2 main parties will change it which is problematic for the 3 step plan. Last time Labour were in government they were there for 3 terms and sometimes with huge majorities. That would have been a good time to get it through, yet as far as I know it was not even attempted.

We were supposed to get an electoral reform referendum when the Lib Dems propped up the Tories but it didn't manifest.wasn't this the AV referendum.

They didn’t say no thanks to PR

The Labour Party didn't think they needed PR - and they didn't - until they completely fucked up in Scotland.

Now, IF they ever get back into power, they'd better reconsider. If - and it's a big if - Scotland ever does become independent; then rUK will become a one-party State, under FPTP - and that Party will be the Tory Party.

People in here know that I'm pro-independence. It's because I want to live in a representative democracy - which an independent Scotland would be; just like Germany, Israel and New Zealand are.

I am well aware of the various difficulties that would present - but I believe self determination is more important. Certainly, the Tories think it's important for the people of Ukraine and Hong Kong. So, why not us?

That said, if the UK had a Parliament elected on a PR basis, everyone's vote would count; including those cast in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Well, maybe not everyone - Sinn Fein MPs wouldn't take their seats.

I would be a lot less keen on independence if I thought my vote had any real influence on the outcome of a UK GE.

Right now, it doesn't - and that's true for a lot of English voters, too; depending upon where they live.

The status quo causes division and deepens it. Certainly, when it throws up a government the like of which we have now - and will have for at least two more years.

PR certainly seems to have a lot of support, myself included but as previously mentioned neither of the 2 main parties seem to even mention it let alone pledge a referendum. The lib dems for whatever reason blew their chance and we ended up with a AV referendum instead. I think one of the problems is that to get into government to be able to change the system you first need to win at FPTP. Once a party has managed that they may be less likely to change the system that put them in office. Somehow the 2 things need separating
