Barclay brothers

Read an interesting piece on the surviving Barclay brother (They used to own the Telegraph Group). He divorced his wife of 37 years for a settlement of £1million pounds and £60k a month living expenses. His estimated worth is £8billion but in order to avoid tax this wealth has been put in a series of offshore trusts which are designed to pass this wealth on to his brothers three children. Technically his only asset was the yacht he was at living on which he has now sold and spent the proceeds of, and is now destitute! His brothers children have been paying his legal costs as his attempts to get legal aid were laughed out of court, and he still owes his ex-wife £500k plus her monthly maintenance plus her legal costs which are approximately £500k too. He is now being threatened with jail by the judge in charge of the case because of his selling off of his yacht and constructive destitution. Personally I don’t see why this 87 year old billionaire should be housed at the public’s expense although it seems a fitting place for him to end up.

My own brother has done something similar to hide all his money, albeit on a much tinier scale, to avoid giving his ex-wife a single penny when they divorced. Personally I feel that both the fuckers should be thrown in jail and kept there indefinitely until they pay their ex's what they are entitled to.

Morally I absolutely agree with you but it’s just in the case of a multi-billionaire who has spent most of his life promoting horrible (to me) opinions and avoiding tax I would rather not have to pay for his imprisonment. Maybe the white elephant of Rwanda would suit him better?

I wonder what’s happened to his island.

I remember sailing past it a couple of years ago and their house was a ridiculous size. Like a bad guys lair from a Bond film.

All passed on to his late brother’s children - nothing to do with him allegedly

We could revive the old concept of debtors prison for these arseholes - they are kept in prison until they pay what they owe, but they also have to pay for the privilege of their incarceration. If they don't pay the rent on their cell, they lose the bed, get another five cellmates, have a shared bucket that only gets emptied every 3 days... No free food, if they don't pay they go hungry... Funnily enough a lot of them would suddenly manage to find the money that they said they didn't have!

It’s what people Tory ( and Blair) supporters voted for so they will be delighted he’s doing so well and trying to use tax payers money for his defence. After all they gave him the “free of tax” money in the first place.

If he’s down to his last £8B it’s totally understandable. Maybe he can get get sone tax credits just to add insult to injury.

Peterhead or Hull prisons would be appropriate . They are both by the sea!!

What?"

Trust fund means they avoid all tax in effect. Inheritance, income. Hundreds of thousands of companies are owned this way. Mostly based in U.K. dominions avoiding paying their fair dues.

It’s very easy and legal if you can afford the costs to set up. Which are minimal.
