At an estimated cost to the taxpayer of £1.4bn per annum.

At who knows what cost to the people taken their, their mental health and their physical wellbeing.

If I was someone fleeing my country due to persecution, it would certainly make me think twice about choosing to go to another country where, I would be flown to a 3rd country and very likely, persecuted.

Patel's proposal will be a success in the respect that it should deter immigrants but when Australia did the same thing, they had a lot of problems and higher costs than budgeted.

Global Britain at it's best..

It won’t happen. It is another ‘Patel proposal ‘ to appease the racists amongst the Tory voters that will quickly be forgotten

The Tories in the other thread seem to be excited by this distraction though. So it's working.

Depends whether the contract is going to a relative of Patel, and how much money they can embezzle out of it. I could easily see this turning into "dump the bodies in the sea, put the money in your pocket". I suppose that would be a vote winning policy though...

Not this time, the policy was designed to grab headlines. It’s totally unworkable and will be shelved after the elections.

We all know we cannot trust the PM to deliver anything he says, every thing he says is a lie, no one is ready to give him the benefit of the doubt anymore, that’s what’s being said up and down the country. The PM is a liar and a swindler, his whole persona is geared towards self preservation and the ability to keep himself in power at the expense of others.

. You appear to have over looked a number of key points. Most government contacts are put out to tender , any organisation tendering has to puy forward a valid businness plan and their submissions will be reviewed by a variety of civil servants who are independent of the government.

Various people were prosecuted last year for people smuggling last year when 39 migrants died in a container.

We should be respecting Priti Patel for addressing what is a very serious issue.

Those who criticise the Home Secretary are just a very vocal monitory. More people support her plan than are against it.

So we just accept than anyone from anywhere can come here as they wish for whatever reason they have and we should have no redress.

We think it wrong that armed Russians can cross a sovereign border and they should be stopped, but if they were unarmed it would have been OK and Ukraine should just suck it up. Armed or unarmed you should not be allowed to cross a sovereign border uninvited or without approval, not just the UK, but anywhere.

Send them to Rwanda, I suspect some don't disclose where they're from anyway so can't be sent back to where they originally came from. It will certainly deter them from coming.

PMSL, are you comparing immigrants coming to the UK with Russia invading Ukraine?

Mr Hay you have a very short memory. During the pandemic THIS government used emergency powers to bypass procurement due diligence and created the VIP lane for Ministers and Tory MPs & Peers to recommend suppliers for lucrative PPE and other medical contracts. A huge number of these contracts were with companies with connections to the Ministers/MPs/Peers that provided either them or their family, friends, cronies or donors with £billions of public money.

The NAO concluded that companies coming through the VIP lane were 90% more likely to secure contracts. They also concluded that this was the case despite most of these companies having no experience in medical supplies and that they ignored awarding contracts to British companies with significant and relevant track records.

Even worse, a huge volume of the PPE supplied by these hastily set up, mostly off shore companies, turned out to be unusable forcing the DHSC to write off £8 billion in their annual report and accounts.

Just one example is the Tory Peer Michelle Mone who secured a contract for an Isle of Man based company that had (hidden) connections to her husband Doug Barrowman. They bought the PPE from China then sold it to the UK govt at a 300% mark up pocketing the rest and paying no tax on it.
