The thing with Politics and Politicians is that - one has to experience them over time - and not just jump to a press release (often themselves uniquely steeped in severe political alliances to begin with. Read Le Monde above for proof-perfect of that) or by what you have inherited from your Mum and Dad and the politics of their time, or from the peer-groups in which we all align ourselves in our youth and often temper as we mature. Affiliation for affiliations’ sake simply takes us down a path of least reward and enlightenment, which ultimately clouds our world view down to a single filter of . . .

Truthfully. I don't think that they will. It may come to a second runoff . . . but OMG! that says so much about French (nay European Politics at the moment).

I believe that Macron will just get by. Mouvement des gilets jaunes stopped the show at many of Macrons events this year (and many other years ).

I would guess Macron will win in the end. I think the French may want a bit of continuity after covid and now Ukraine with all it's knock on effects.

It's going to be close.

Prices are rising for all basic French amenities and foods.

The riots about the rising of the retirement age is still current and fresh in the minds of the French people.

The gilets jaunes are still ever present and with petrol and diesel rising again they are ever more physical and vocal.

Le Pen has 'calmed' some of her message to the people.

But there is also an underlying feeling that the turnout will be very low as people are fed up with covid and now Ukraine affecting daily life too, many say they can't see a way through so why bother to vote at all.

This is really odd in French politics because the people normally react very quickly and decisively when faced with economic or social change. Politicians really do walk on eggshells most of the time.

When it was announced that the retirement age was rising in the UK - we all grumbled and got on with it. When it was proposed in France, they rioted and staged strikes across the whole of France. Most of those rioting were ordinary adults with ordinary families - and the age was only being risen to 64 ! (Retirement in France is 62).

Macron has also suffered from his talks with Putin. Whatever he says his aims are, many quarters in France and the World are seeing it as a dangerous precedent that takes him outside the frame of Western and European cooperation and unity.

One might think the “Mélenchonists” will tip the balance, but even though J-L himself has said (on at least four occasions): “Il ne faut pas donner une seul voix a Madame Le Pen”, it doesn’t mean that they’ll vote Macron. In fact, it’ll be the abstainers who’ll decide the outcome, and even if LREM is now perceived seen as the party of the krinklies, 38% of 18-24 year-olds and 33% of 25-34 year-olds never even bothered to vote, which disadvantages RN. Eric Zemmour was treated like our own Nigel Farrage, a great laugh but you’d hardly want him in a Government, or even a credible Opposition.

As for our own little place on the coast (838 eligible votes!) with 24.94% abstentions there were 220 votes for Macron, 130 for Le Pen, 94 for Zemmour, 65 for Pécresse...

It’s still open, the only certainty is that it’s too late for the traditional Socialist and Gaullist Parties to re-brand themselves and are probably finished…

Make people believe she is a moderate, then get in power, and start dismantling government from within, converting the democratic institutions into a pseudo dictatorship.

Her pal Orban did it, so did Putin, so did trump.

The French, will no longer have liberty fraternity and equality if she gets in power.

It will be oppression, division, and superiority.

If France votes her in, we will have an enemy at the gates.

Le Pen is calling for closer ties with Russia .... so it seems she is for the russian people.

Boris johnski and the conservative & unionist party as a whole got their fingers extremely badly burnt with this particular policy. perhaps she didn't notice the disintergration of a mainstream political autocracy that is the tories, over it's financialy corrupt dealings with with an equally sickening autocracy that is the All Russia Peoples Front.

I wouldn't vote for her and non of my Family in France do. But they aren't best pleased with Macron right now. The difficulty for Macron may come with a low turnout. This really favours Le Pen.

I wouldn't vote for her and non of my Family in France do. But they aren't best pleased with Macron right now. The difficulty for Macron may come with a low turnout. This really favours Le Pen.

I don't especially like Macron. If I was in France I would not be excited about the choices.
