None of us are military wise but is there no option for Ukraine to counter attack russian cities on/near the border?

That would undermine their moral high ground, divert resources from defensive actions in Ukraine where there is still a lot to do, alienate the (part if the) Russian population that is against the war, as well as piss off the ICC.

So not a smart move.

No because by just keeping a defensive stance you will get more support from other countries for weapons ect.

There are that many of them to whittle down the invasion.

It’s only Russian superior weapons that has ripped the balance but that’s slowing down and changing.
