"Dangerously close. As in I don’t think we’ve ever been this close before. Putin is currently lobbying China for weapon support, and is hitting airbases used for NATO drills inside Ukraine now but a stones throw from Poland. If he succeeds in getting China on side, I worry at how emboldened he will feel. I’m not saying definitely nuclear, but it will be war I think. Let’s hope it’s not nuclear, as to quote Sarah Connor, anyone not wearing 2 million sunblock is gonna have a real bad day" China has spoken they're not in favour of the war.

Everyone has a bullseye on their head if it goes nuclear- China just want to get rich and prosper like everyone else. North Korea are more likely, but China has control of that too. Absolutely no chance.

"A couple of weeks ago i would say no chance. However, the ego of Putin and his mental state god knows now!!!" I'll add to this by saying how bizarre my life is right now that I've been having more meaningful conversations about the state of the World with people who have their penis as an avatar, than I am with my housemates. Not knocking it, it just seems a bit surreal!

"Probably a really stupid question ![]() Yes all the major powers(Even us) have shelters in place Especially Russia and the US from what I gather but most of the populace is screwed. Who benefits from any war honestly the problem is that we tend to fantasise about it as some heroic endeavour rather than the systematic termination of human life.

"Probably a really stupid question ![]() I'm sure some have bunkers. Think is, collectively, there are enough nukes on the planet to pretty much decimate most cities. An Intercontinental Ballistic Missile can travel from anywhere in Russia to the UK in under 15-20 minutes... that's not much time to travel to a bunker. There are around 13,000 nukes on the planet. Detonating one would be a chain reaction for most. It would be over in 15 minutes tbh. ![]()

"How close do you think we are of world war three? folk I'm opening this now to see what folk have to say" The longer the war in Ukraine goes on, the closer we will get. It starts with humanitarian aid, then it creeps to defensive weapons support, then offensive weapons support, then military vehicles (tanks, tracked combat vehicles and aircraft), then come the advisors and technical support staff. At some point a missile goes astray, or an aircraft gets shot down “accidentally” and so it goes on. I actually think that we will end up in a conflict with Russia but I doubt that it will be a nuclear conflict. The only outcome of a nuclear conflict would be mutually assured destruction and I doubt that either side would be pressed to such a point as to use these weapons as a last option.

"30 years ago, absolutely! But today? Russia doesn't have the "Red army" anymore. Just look at the losses they are taking in Ukraine over a few weeks. All the nationistic stooges wearing "Z" t-shirts will change their tune when they're conscripted for the meat grinder. Russia has seen lots of decline due to corruption. Money has been skimmed away over decades to feather people's nests and buy yaughts in all industires. This has affected their military who are using tanks with fake ERA modules made of cardboard and who are resorting to using civil trucks to ferry supplies. They are using "dumb" bombs on planes as their guided ones cannot use the GPS sattelites anymore. The only real threat is the artillery to Ukraine. If Russia was in a ground war with NATO, it would be crushed. As for nuclear weapons, none will ever be used as Putin's cronies don't want to destroy the world, and their wealth." Yes there is a lot of truth in that. Nuclear threat aside, the Russian military isn't quite as scary as it used to be. Yes they (allegedly) have the numbers but a lot of their kit is old Soviet era and a lot of it has been badly maintained or not maintained at all. The other big problem they have is their reliance on tanks. Tanks were never designed to fight in urban areas. They are fine in open country and can smash through small towns and villages but put them in a city surrounded by 10 or more storey buildings and they are vulnerable and are far too easily picked off with shoulder launched missiles. As the Ukrainians have proved. At some point the Russians are going to have to get their boots dirty, as did the Red Army in Berlin 77 years ago. Then the question of motivation and morale comes into play. Teenage conscripts fighting a war they had very little preparation for versus a well armed militia fighting for its homeland. Meat grinder is a good description. As for WW3 it could go a lot of ways. In a perfect world someone would put a bullet into Putin's head and it will all stop tomorrow. I don't see that happening just yet. Both sides could get around the table and negotiate something, but they would have to give Putin some kind of face saver. Deep down he probably knows he's bitten off more than he can chew and at this point could be looking for a way out. Maybe if Ukraine ended the dispute over Crimea and agreed to give up Donbass Putin may be willing to take it and walk away with his head high. Neither region will ever be governable by Ukraine so why not cut their losses and walk away. Although Putin would have to give some serious concessions as well. If it carries on then the danger will always be escalation either by accident or design. We've already seen the Russians hit a base only 12 miles from the Polish border. What if one or two of those 30 cruise missiles had gone off course and actually hit Poland? Where would that leave NATO? Or, as Russia has already threatened, they deliberately attack supply's going to Ukraine on Polish territory? All are possible scenarios. I think the risk of Putin opening up another front in the Baltic states or elsewhere has diminished from where it was a couple of weeks ago. The Russian military has been humiliated in Ukraine and they are already asking the Chinese to supply arms. Which tells me that they are losing more kit than they can replace. I just don't think they are capable of starting another fight. And even if Ukraine stopped tomorrow it will take some considerable time for them to regroup and re-equip before they head off on another adventure. Hopefully someone would have taken my first option by then.

"China want rid of the burden that is Russia. Putin has lost the war for Ukraine they will never win. Even if they put someone in charge the people will not just sit there and take it. The worry is what extremes will Putin go to,too save face. And even if he launched an attack he's still going to lose. I just pray that this can end before THE END. " I'm hoping that China can talk him out of doing anything really stupid. I can see him obliterating Ukraine before he puts his dummy back in though. And likely over borders to piss NATO off and make them fight back. Big baby. ![]()

"China hold a lot of cards here right? I wonder which is more valuable to them, access the Russian oil and gas or access to “western” consumers?" They can buy oil and gas from lots of different places. So the Russians can be replaced. Once western consumers are gone, they are gone. Maybe China should focus on that for a moment.

"Probably a really stupid question ![]() There are plenty in power across the world and the rich in private sector who have access to bunkers and other long term survival environments. Two caveats: These things have not been tested in the real world (obviously) Those with access need to be able to get to their safe havens in time. Not an easy task at v short notice. So no guarantees even if you have a bunker.

The closer to the south pole you can get gives you the best chance, as the entire northern hemisphere would be fucked. But even that's not going to totally escape from fallout, so it's cancers, mutagenic effects, a constant sub zeroe atmosphere with little daylight so your crops won't grow. As has been said. Best to have the bomb go off directly over your head.
