If Cameron intervened in Syria it wouldn’t have given Putin the balls to support Assad and subsequently use that conflict as a template for his invasion of Ukraine and lead to 15,000 Syrian fighters supporting the Russian military.

Discuss.

I am not sure about dates and personalities, but I think that it was Obama’s reluctance to act on previously announced ‘red lines’ that was the real enabling moment for Putin. It’s ice to think the U.K. may have been pivotal in Russia’s decision making but we in the U.K. are nothing more than a fly to swat away in the greater scheme of things.

That said, going forwards, NATO does need to establish some red lines (use of chemical/biological weapons and/or tactical nuclear weapons) that will result in forceful and overwhelming retaliation, and if those red lines get broken then action MUST be taken.

Agree with the first part if were talking about the point where we could have made a difference in Syria,If we had supported rebels from the get go and not acted against them then Putin would likely never have got involved.

Ukraine was a project of his all along though so doubt anything would stop it.Likely planned out well before Bashar even assumed power although think he was hoping for one war not three.

The triangular history between Ukraine, Russia and the US agencies that like to fuck with everything like the world is a chess board go well further back than Syria.

But people here dont want to hear that. Let's just stick to what the newspapers are telling us and then we won't have to think for ourselves.

Less thinking and more drinking!

Russian invasion of Crimea and the pathetic response from the west was the issue that emboldened Putin
