Shell and BP

So, while over 26 energy companies go to the wall, millions of customers forced onto horrendous tariffs and deep into fuel poverty ongoing. The government under pressure to bail customers and energy companies out.

Shell and BP, sit back and watch.

As for windfall taxes preventing investment in renewables. These investments are long overdue and hypocrisy that these companies that have lobbied, bribed governments and damaged our climate, not claim the high ground that we 'need' their investments.

On principle of the BP "Cash Machine" comments and todays threats of removing renewable investments, they should take the windfall and give it to fledgling companies developing green alternatives and those struggling.

Are we nuts?

From the Guardian..

Shell and BP, which together produce more than 1.7bn tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, have not paid any corporation tax on oil and gas production in the North Sea for the last three years, company filings reveal.

The oil giants, which have an annual global footprint of greenhouse gases more than five times bigger than Britain’s, are benefiting from billions of pounds of tax breaks and reliefs for oil and gas production.

Shell and BP paid no corporation tax or production levies on North Sea oil operations between 2018 and 2020, and claimed tax reliefs of nearly £400m, according to annual “payments to governments” reports analysed by the Observer.

Over the same three-year period, they paid shareholders more than £44bn in dividends.

A petroleum revenue tax of 35% was effectively scrapped by the then chancellor, George Osborne, in 2016 and oil giants can claim billions of pounds in taxpayer handouts for decommissioning rigs.

The North Sea is now one of the most profitable areas in the world for oil and gas production, after tax cuts by the government to encourage production.

Taxpayers will foot a bill of more than £18bn for the decommissioning of the oil and gas infrastructure in the North Sea up to 2065 – made up of tax repayments and a reduction in offshore corporation tax.

Campaigners want the handouts to be scrapped and used for investing in clean energy.

Well free markets and favourable tax regimes showing how you can make a real profit and still get the tax payer to foot the nasty things in life like cleaning up your mess.

Years of North Sea wealth squandered by successive governments.

Hmmmm

Do you think the NI increase could be classed as a windfall tax?

All these billions the energy and companies and the likes of BP are making would be going back to the coffers if the Tories had not sold/given everything this country had away. I believe we are near the bottom of the heap in the developed world regarding public owned assets.

Well the money has to come from somewhere and in true Tory tradition those who can afford the least pay the most.

Oh yes. "The working class can kiss my ass, I've got the foreman's job at last".

Oh just to let you know. It's a bit cold in Germany at the moment but back to Spain next month.

I think that the law would need to be changed, in order to raise the tax rates payable by energy companies.

After all, its a retrospective action. Should that happen, then the energy companies could well domicile elsewhere.

It comes from the oil companies not paying a fair tax rate for 40 years and potentially short changing the state pension which was set up to help the less well off.

There is a huge government pension liability shortfall in this country. So much for the Tory fiscal management over 40 years. Looks a bit shit to me. This from an ex Tory voter so I take my share of the blame. I’ve read more now so a bit smarter. Not a lot,,, but a bit.

Enjoy Spain .

Typical Tory jibe cares for not but oneself and anyone that has a thought for others that need help is a typical leftie according to their bible. As said enjoy the EU that you seem to have such disdain for it reminds me of so many that voted to leave then scrambled for EU passports as soon as it happened.

Princes Risborough, Luasanne, Alderney

the failed conservative and unionist party government's refusal to act on rising cost of living and exorbitant profiteering from abnormally high fuel prices by themselves and their chums in big business, (especially their mutal chums of putin who they are currently pretending to impose sanctions upon whilst taking donations to the party), while the silent majority begin to struggle has rendered them unelectable.
