If you voted for Johnson before, would you vote for him again?

I ask this question in the wake of the Paterson lobbying scandal. A scandal that was made very much worse when Johnson used Paterson as an excuse to try and tear up the rulebook that's there to try and hold MPs to account.

Johnson has arguably done things that are far worse. But I'm getting a feeling the Paterson incident might be the tipping point for some.

I think it's a clear and simple question. I guess we'll see what answers it gets, if any.

Does anyone vote for a person? they have to be pretty stupid if they do. Personally i vote on the main points in a manifesto the ones that benefit me and my family and come across as credible are the party i go for,who cares who the person is if they stick to the manifesto.

Is "disaster capitalism" in the Tory party manifesto?

Or awarding PPE contracts through nepotism.

Or flushing human shit into the rivers.

Or lying to the queen.

Or lying to the British public

Etc etc. Could go on all day. But the point is, the Tories are not credible when it comes to sticking to their manifesto. Even if their manifesto is broadly speaking Eton speak for, fuck the poor, they're actually much worse than that.

Think your partly right England in general especially in southern England do not like lefties apart from London , Labour had to turn right to get elected under Blair, with no worthwhile opposition Conservatives can do what they want and still get in at election time

I keep hearing this but has there been one case so far of people lining their pockets? It is so easy to throw accusations about when you disagree but personally i like to see actual proof not someone's bias opinion. If any corruption has taken place the full force of the law should be brought down to bare.

Have you been reading about Owen Peterson? There's one single example.

Do you think it's appropriate that the Tories do everything they can to concentrate on getting rich, and getting Tory party donors rich? Bending the law, trying to change the methods of scrutiny to worm their way out of trouble?

In any case. I think you answered the OP. None of this matters to you personally. Which is fine.

Question. On a previous thread you mentioned that anyone who takes a moment to consider the impact of brexit should "fuck off out of the country".

Does the same apply to people making outrageous claims such as "Corbyn is not the current Labour leader"?

Asking for a friend.

In the past I have voted for both main parties by how I judge at the time. I can't say now how I will feel shortly before the next GE. For me the Paterson saga is a big tick in the negative column for y conservative if that helps. Will have to wait until the GE and compare the full term to what other parties say/promise

Just so we're clear, you are saying you would vote for Boris again, (as per the question in the OP), and the reason is because a different labour leader, who you don't like, lost the election to Boris Johnson last time around.

Fair play.

I will think back to it, yes. Obviously I can't speak for others. I do feel rightly or wrongly that one of the opposition jobs is to remind voters of such mistakes. It will be the usual thing of the incumbent government going on about good things and opposition about bad things and hopefully how they plan to do a better job.

You just said people don’t vote for people (implying tory voters voted for the party not Johnson) then can’t mention Labour without mentioning Corbyn? Make your mind up Costa!

Regardless of what the UK FPTP constituency politics is “supposed” to mean, of course most people in the UK vote for the person they want to see as PM (as long as they are in the tribe/team they are incapable of voting against)!

"Simple answer no

Interesting. Did he not meet expectations? he got brexit done job done that was it for me "

And look what that blinkered single issue has enabled. Brexit = Trojan Horse bringing in a proto-fascist Govt that are barely recognisable as Conservatives. Thatcher would be ashamed!

Didn't vote Tory, but nothing has really surprised this term. They got their version of brexit over the line. Not a suprise. It was oven ready. They've made some clumsy decisions in policy. Not a surprise, given the last few months of the previois government. They have been too close to some of their best mates and havent managed conflict of interest. Again, this doesn't feel like it's going against the grain. Whipping thru decisions feels in line with previous.

Covid has been a game changer and forced them to be a bit more socialist like.

And while the NIP drama isn't a suprise, and probably in line with many supporters views, it is a bit odd to want to u turn on a cornerstone manifesto deliverable.

Triggering A-16 is more likely to collapse the entire Brexit deal once the sanctions kick in - meaning that it never really was “done” in the first place.

"I ask this question in the wake of the Paterson lobbying scandal. A scandal that was made very much worse when Johnson used Paterson as an excuse to try and tear up the rulebook that's there to try and hold MPs to account.

Johnson has arguably done things that are far worse. But I'm getting a feeling the Paterson incident might be the tipping point for some.

"

It'll only be the tipping point for anyone with any integrity or principles.

It terms of Tory MPs, that was about 14% of them. If you extend that to their potential voters - and generously double it - that still leaves you with 72% of Tory voters who don't give a fuck how corrupt the government is because they have no moral compass of their own. So, it's not enough.

It's why they can never be trusted - and if that seems harsh, it's merely a precautionary principle.

If you were in a jungle where you knew 72% of the snakes were deadly, you'd be right to be wary of the 28% that weren't.

Sadly, it's the FPTP system, not the majority of the electorate, that keeps them in power. Until the UK Parliament is elected by PR, these dregs will keep getting elected to power by the conscienceless who vote for them.

The country will keep voting tory because the majority of print media supports the tories.

Labour is held to a higher standard than the cons. Just look at the massive media attack on Corbyn on the run up to the last election. Even the BBC were on it. They still are as they have Laura K who is practially a tory spokesperson.

The country will also keep voting tory because the problems they have created (housing, NHS, funding etc) is blamed on foreigners. Much easier to convince the public that Pawel (who is a tax paying citizen like the rest of us) is causing problems for GPs and the NHS rather than admit it's due to funding cuts.

Case in point, Cornwall and Wales voted for Brexit yet they recieved the most funds from the EU. They wont get the same funding from the government

Let's not forget the massive targeted adverting there was on facebook by cambridge analytica to dupe people into voting for brexit.

Btw brexit isnt over. We may have left the EU but we're still feeling the pain of it and will continue to do so for many decades.

It's the standard defence when a politician has done somthing indefensible. (I suspect it's equally likely to be used for an MP of any party. It just so happens that most of the time right now it's the Tories pulling the indefensible shit.)

"Does anyone vote for a person? they have to be pretty stupid if they do.

All very true but why doesn’t Labour get voted in ? "

Because of the FPTP voting system we use.

The deal is the relationship between the UK and EU. Without the deal its still brexit but a no deal brexit instead of having a deal brexit. Either way brexit has happened. Brexit is the UK leaving the EU only which has happened

What would Johnson have to do to not be voted for again?

Lie?

Be corrupt?

Be incompetent?

Not care about anyone or anything except himself?

Not take responsibility for anything negative?

Be responsible for deaths due to the above?

Cause the break-up of the UK?

Is there anything at all?

I've mused along these lines, too. Some of his supporters really do seem to forgive him for anything at all. Their reasoning and excuses get ever more bizarre as he becomes more and more indefensible.

Their reasoning and excuses get ever more bizarre as he becomes more and more indefensible."

This is not uncommon in general.

O ce you have made a commitment and argued your position vociferously, it's very, very hard to accept that you have been conned because you have to accept the reality of the circumstances.

Intelligwnt people are much better at defending the indefensible, because they're clever. However, this is because they are actually defending their own sense of self-worth and self-perception. Clever people get co ned all the time, but it is far, far harder for them to acknowledge it than for those who are aware that that is not their strongest skill.

I'm not a Boris supporter. Or Tory. But I can see that if you have broad ideals in line with conservatives, then you almost have to go blue, regardless of the details. Labour, libs, sno, greens all take a similar space so you can move your vote.... But the lack of an alternative means your are screwed.

Boris Johnson wanted to go to India to try to close a trade deal and kept travel to India open during the height of their outbreak to maintain the option and not upset India. That was probably the reference here.

"Imagine having a popularity rating of minus twenty"

I think that you could live with that if you had some thought and strategy and conviction behind what you were doing.

I do not get the impression that this is anymore than about pride and power, so probably not good.

I expect the Prime Minister will be avoiding responsibility and hiding again...

You gotta love how out of that list you pick one thing implying it is wrong when it is just semantics. Maybe I should have typed...

“The Prime Minister’s trade trip to India that got cancelled on 19 April after increased pressure relating to what came to be called the Delta Variant.”

But that was a bit of a mouthful and “trip to India” had it covered!

Go back and check out the timeline regarding that planned trip and how long they had known about Delta and how long it took to close the border (flights) to and from India. BJ’s inaction allowed Delta to swarm into the UK killing 000s more people.

Arguements are usually stronger if the facts are right!

My opinion?

This is a "win at all costs" brexit goverment, thats left many traditional Conservatives appalled. Myself included.

For the first time in 40 years, I didn't vote Conservative in 2019. The writing was on the wall, when honest and traditional Conservatives started to get marginalised and pushed away.

Brexit as a concept was ill-thought out. Its execution has been an unmitigated disaster.

Covid has largely followed that same path but at least there are some mitigations there.

The pattern has continued with "sleaze". It needs stamping out, because we are creating a dangerous whirlpool in politics, where we will all get sucked in, unless we do something to change the system.

"Didn't vote Tory, but nothing has really surprised this term.

How did they get Brexit done?

I am sure I heard Frost yesterday threatening to trigger A-16 ?

Unless triggering the article 16 somehow makes the UK re join the EU then I don't see how its relevant.

Triggering A-16 is more likely to collapse the entire Brexit deal once the sanctions kick in - meaning that it never really was “done” in the first place."

so is that what you are predicting brexit collapse???

It would be a "no-deal" Brexit because our own doesn't like what it negotiated and signed.

Pretty much.

He fucked us over so they could dump human shit into the rivers, do trade deals to import sub quality food while fucking over British farmers, destroy the fishing industry and add huge extra costs and red tape to any British businesses who import and export to the EU.

He only very thinly veiled this with the bullshit bus, no one believed that the NHS would even vaguely benefit. We all knew what brexit would bring. So in that sense. He delivered.

So, if he is turning out to be a liar and incompetent and he brought you Brexit...or is that a special case? Unconneif you kept up with the thread I wouldn’t need to tell you but here it goes I voted for him to get brexit done now it’s time for him to fuck off

Sure that "done" would mean he's delivered everything he said he would, has he?we are out the eu

Yes and as a result poorer.

What brexit promises has delivered?im sorry your poorer I’ll buy you a pint if I see you in clubf mate "

So you can't actually respond to the point made, and ClubF doesn't have an alcohol license I believe.

"Didn't vote Tory, but nothing has really surprised this term.

How did they get Brexit done?

I am sure I heard Frost yesterday threatening to trigger A-16 ?

Unless triggering the article 16 somehow makes the UK re join the EU then I don't see how its relevant.

This makes sense. A Venn diagram showing people who think brexit is a good idea, would have a lot of overlap with people who think Boris is a good PM.

It is not "done" if we're still negotiating with the EU. This could still be "no deal" rather than just a bad deal. Is your definition of "done" that there was a headline that you read and the liar told you something that you decided to believe? Like George Bush Jr landing on the aircraft carrier with the "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq.

He's a liar. You don't trust him or anything that he does now but you trust what he said that he did and would happen before despite the evidence to the contrary.

He's put a border down the Irish sea

He's thrown fishermen over board

Is that getting brexit done?

He's thrown fishermen over board????

Really must of missed that one Boris tossing fishermen off

Johnson did that so he could get to their wives before the fishermen could swim all the way back.

Wow you really have an issue with Boris don’t you?

Have you considered counselling

What first attracted you to the serial liar sex pest?are we out of the eu?"

Yes and as a result we are all poorer, have a border down the Irish sea.

If brexit is that good, list the tangible benefits.

There is no point asking what the benefit of Brexit is, because over the chosen 50 year period there is no way to know

What is more interesting, in the context of this thread is what makes BoJo more unreliable now than before? More power and therefore more opportunity to to cause chaos.

However, why does that not apply to what he has said and done before now? Was what he did truthful and positive before then?

"Didn't vote Tory, but nothing has really surprised this term.

And while the NIP drama isn't a suprise, and probably in line with many supporters views, it is a bit odd to want to u turn on a cornerstone manifesto deliverable.

How did they get Brexit done?

I am sure I heard Frost yesterday threatening to trigger A-16 ?

Unless triggering the article 16 somehow makes the UK re join the EU then I don't see how its relevant.

Triggering A-16 is more likely to collapse the entire Brexit deal once the sanctions kick in - meaning that it never really was “done” in the first place.so is that what you are predicting brexit collapse???

First off. I like that I have a pet name "grasshopper".

Secondly, sure, I don't see or hear everything. But I am aware of what's going on in the UK to a degree.

Is there a secret upside to Johnson as a PM, or to Brexit? Something we're not being told. And does it out weigh the rivers of shit, and the giant brexit turd that the Tories dumped onto is all?

And the corruption continues to be revealed...

Geoffrey Cox MP spent April, while Brits were still under lockdown rules, in the Caribbean, voting in parliament over Zoom, earning £100,000s representing a tax haven island “against the British state” over corruption claims!

Daily Mail no less...

"A Whitehall insider said: ‘While he should have been in the UK working for his constituents he’s been over in the British Virgin Islands doing his second job working as a barrister and advising those accused of trousering cash for their mates.’"

"Interesting that not 1 person has said they voted for Johnson before and would vote for him again."

They might just be lying. Clearly, a lot of them did it last time to get Brexit done - but a lot of them do it as a matter of course.

Their most faithful mouthpiece on here justified (in his own mind, at least) voting Tory by saying it was what was best for his family and children.

Too spineless to own what he really is, using his loved ones as an excuse, in a desperate attempt to convince anyone at all, that he isn't 100% behind all they do. If you think that's harsh, look at his track record. By his posts shall ye know him.

Unless he didn't really mean any of it. A notion even more ridiculous than he is.

If you knowingly vote for a Party whose policies increase child poverty and hunger, in the UK - as well as the Third World - simply because you care more about your own (which ALL non-Tory voters do, by the way) - then you are part of a minority, devoid of empathy and conscience, frequently considered despicable ...

and you should not be surprised when the words most often used to describe you are vile insults.

I honestly don't know the answer to this but did child hunger and poverty and the UK and the third world decrease between 1997-2010?

Transparent, paid work external to his work as an MP and not either illegal or medically irresponsible to be working in the BVI.

There is no indication that he didn't carry out his constituency duties.

Not convinced about that either. An MP who is a human rights lawyer acting against the government would be fine for you, but outrage a Daily Mail reader.

He is probably being paid the going rate for a QC doing that work.

If he was carrying out his constituency work, then also fine.

It may not be a good look in some ways, but he is not doing anything inappropriate.

This is more an overreach of outrage than sleaze or corruption. Do we stop MPs from practicing as doctors or writing books too?

Interesting take but I would argue that his position as an MP and Attorney General eould give him privileged access to information that would result in a conflict of interest when representing BVI in tax haven and tax evasion aiding and abetting. ie supporting a “regime” that is not to the benefit of the UK or his constituents.

Plus he travelled abroad when most of us couldn’t!

"Do we stop MPs from practicing as doctors or writing books too?"

If the MP has influence of something like art grants that apply to authors as well as artists. Then there is a conflict of interest if they apply for the grant for their book.

There is a different way of dealing with it.

But there should be a way to stop nepotism and self serving politics.

Lie?

Their reasoning and excuses get ever more bizarre as he becomes more and more indefensible."

You are making a non-neutral value judgement.

He is a former Attorney General. He cannot be made to forget what he k kws, but he should not have privileged access. This has not been raised though.

There was absolutely nothing illegal or underhand about the case. It's a legal argument like any other and you could argue that representing a refugee was "against the interest" of the UK or constitutents if so inclined.

We could travel to the BVI if we could afford to then.

Tbis is confected outrage, even though I don't like him much.

Erm. I'm doing fine thanks. But that doesn't magically polish either the brexit turd, or Boris's reign (of river flows) of shit.

Grasshopper you have eyes but do not see, ears but do not listen.....

In those flashbacks, Master Po calls his young student "Grasshopper," given from a playful lesson he taught to Caine as a child about being aware of the world around him, including the grasshopper that happened to be at his feet at that moment.

you have failed to notice the grasshopper.....

Excellent.

Does this mean Boris has secretly polished the brexit turd, and no one except you knows about it?

Will there be a big reveal?

"And the corruption continues to be revealed...

This does not, actually, seem corrupt to me.

Transparent, paid work external to his work as an MP and not either illegal or medically irresponsible to be working in the BVI.

There is no indication that he didn't carry out his constituency duties.

Unless he was using his government contacts inappropriately, I don't actually it's not corrupt, just mildy annoying.

Not financially, morally ?

Not convinced about that either. An MP who is a human rights lawyer acting against the government would be fine for you, but outrage a Daily Mail reader.

He is probably being paid the going rate for a QC doing that work.

If he was carrying out his constituency work, then also fine.

There are plenty of things in life that are not illegal, such as tax avoidance, that are nonetheless considered morally wrong. If an MP earns £82k to represent a rural farming community in Devon but also earns £900k doing work for a British Overseas Territory Govt, which will be their priority? Can you be assured that being an MP and Attorney General did not provide access to privileged information to help him in his activities with the BOT? If someone can earn almost £1m a year from their “second job” you have to ask what the benefit is of their “primary job”. Is it to gain contacts, influence and access (to people and info) and are taxpayers really getting value for money from his activities as an MP?

When the “side hustle” pays over 10 times the primary job, it cannot be deemed a side hustle.

The Guardian...

“Most of Cox’s constituents would expect him to see their welfare, and that of the communities in Torridge and West Devon, as his main concern. If he isn’t prepared to do that – if he wants to be off arguing cases in tax havens – he shouldn’t be an MP.”

However, this is all actually a useful distraction from Johnson and the obvious improprieties he is responsible for!

Two reasons, I actually like him and he's not stupid as people make out. He has ways that make him look like he doesn't know what he's on about but you don't have a CV like his by being stupid.

Also since the last election, I don't think the opposition has massively improved, better than they were. Good at criticism but no concrete ideas as to what they would do better.

He's not stupid. That hardly makes him a good leader, though.

Are you happy with the tens of thousands of deaths Johnson caused? Or are you happy with the corruption he is embroiled in? Or are you happy with his constant lies? Or are you happy with his attempts to break rules and even the law?

I never said he was a good leader, the question was would I vote for him again and I would.

I recall lots of needles deaths in other countries during the last Labour government.

The first pandemic in a hundred years would anyone else have done better? It's not just the UK that have suffered deaths, a lot of countries have.

Are you saying Labour politicians don't lie, aren't corrupt in any way? There's at least two that have been prosecuted for criminal offences and became independent??

Admittedly things are not looking good for Boris at the moment.

The old "nobody woulda done better in the pandemic" argument keeps popping up. And it's utter nonsense. Johnson has been awful in the pandemic. Many avoidable deaths are at his door. The facts are damning. Many people could have done better. Easily.

And of course politicians from other parties lie, fuck up, break the law etc. And? How on Earth is that an argument to allow our country to be led by the most corrupt and least honest leader in living memory in this country? Surely we should all aspire to better.

Your example of Labour politicians being prosecuted is unfortunate, though. A large part of the corruption scandal lately arose because Johnson didn't expel a Tory MP who was found corrupt. And Johnson backed that MP in not being punished according to the rules. On the contrary, Johnson actually tried to nobble the standards committee to get him off. (And to get Johnson off since he's being investigated too.)

He did an excellent job. Lots of Tory party donors made 100s of millions on PPE and other contracts. Great success.

Lots more people died than they needed to while he faffed about, didn't wear a mask, ignored scientific advice etc. But that's not really important. The pandemic was a win for those Tories and their friends "disaster capitalism".

Ah the old "hindsight" argument keeps popping up too. That's also utter nonsense.

We had ample warning Covid was comning. Johnson did bugger all for ages.

Scientists also begged Johnson to close down. Again, he did bugger all until too late. His lateness to lockdowns caused many deaths.

Johnson also provided very muddled messages on Covid at a time when the public needed a v clear message. Worse, he back Cummings after his B Castle jaunt. Studies later showed that incident caused more deaths.

Johnson has many deaths on his hands. But I know you won't believe me. And I know you won't read the damning stats and analyses. So be well I guess.

Personally I think most people will vote for him again. These are people who have no fucking idea about Boris the man, politics , UK economy and basically the rule of law as the owen Patterson situation shows !

They are in there own little world where the British empire still exists, playing rule Britannia and hating Johnny foreigner for taking all our jobs!

I did feel sorry for them because they were/are being lied to but they just cannot see it!! Basically, let’s call it as it is , they are fucking stupid !

I’m afraid they will carry on thinking life is so much better despite things collapsing around them.

For god sake people stop listening to fancy sound bites and look at the actual FACTS and open your eyes.

I’m praying the younger generation will get a grip on this and turn this fucking shit show around , hopefully sooner rather than later cos folks we are sinking fast and I fear for a generation.

BJ and his cronies should be locked up for what they have done to this country !!

Oh and for the record I’m no Labour fan, I’m your average joe that actually cares for this country and the people in it. Even the stupid ones!!!

"

So basically the people that don't agree with you or your politics either have "no fucking idea" or are the "Stupid one's"

That will work well as a slogan when the next ele comes around.
