Bidding to become president of France, he proclaimed: “We must regain our legal sovereignty so that we are no longer subject to the rulings of the European Court of Justice or the European Court of Human Rights.”

Isn't this exactly what he was slagging the uk off for?

Yes agreed - absolute political opportunism - reminiscent of somebody else who decided to swerve to leave purely for the votes

and as hypocritical as Farage who berates the EU but is happy to be paid by them…

He should know better than most that they signed all those rights away and will not get them back.

Saw this and heard his comments on politico, must be his last gasp at political promotion. I don't see a break up of the EU, but certainly a shake up of the rules.

And let's not forget that he is seeking a 3 year ban on - Muslim - immigration into the EU/France too. And seeking to stop the European Courts to stop him doing so.

But let's face it he is best placed to know exactly what Brussels bureaucracy really is.

But as one political pundit put it . . .

"French politics is cynical, and opportunists and political turn-coats often profit from reversing their once cherished beliefs and positions. But after nearly five decades of being one of France ’ s high- level pro-Europeans , Michel Barnier ’ s last throw of the political dice is unlikely to win him entry into the second round of the contest for the Elys é e in April next year."
