Apparently, that craptacular mound built in London increased in cost to £6 million. The guy who led the project, Melvyn Caplan, has resigned.

How did they blow 6 million quid on that?

Well people voted for the local council and it will be up to them to vote them out if they think they have wasted their money.

I suspect they may think 6 million is a bit much for a crappy little hill.

How do these people run a business?

You come up with an idea, you put it out for quotation, you agree a price and sign contracts. Where do these extra costs come from? Seems to be all too prevalent when its taxpayers money involved.

Extra costs are incurred very often in construction. It's then up to the company to swallow it or approach the client and tell them it'll cost more.

I would agree though that it's all too prevelant when it's from the public purse.

I guess the only way we will know about this monstrosity is after a period of paying customers. If the costs are recouped then it was worth it.

At the moment, they're apparently getting zero revenue. They charged early on, but teething troubles meant they had to offer refunds. And it's gonna be free through August.

Oh and it's supposed to be a temporary structure.

Might be slightly tricky to recoup that 6 million.

Given all the news cycle about it, they should drop whatever they are doing, make it a meme material, get money out of advertising.

May as well demolish it now, cut any further losses. Then given that it looks absolutely nothing like the pictures that the design company showed to get the contract, start legal proceedings to recover the money. Somebody somewhere is to blame, and it shouldn't be the rate payers that pick up the bill.

Look if westminster council want to waste their taxpayers money on something, let them, its upto the constituents in that area to vote them out. It not our problem, so why make a fuss about it?

What is even more spectacular is that it is temporary! It is only meant to be there until January. So all that money for a shit heap that was only meant to be there for a few months anyway.

Yes a temporary structure that was supposed to originally cost 3 million, so how were they ever going to make a profit ? Even at the original cost

Someone should be investigated and prosecuted as this does not add up

White elephant springs to mind

Well did we personally approve the idea? We didn’t, so not our fault not our problem, its for the voter to decide in the next election whether 6 million pounds of tax payer money was a good investment.

Well with a planned lifetime of 5 months they only needed to get 7000 or so visitors every single day, prepared to pay £4.50 to climb up a bit of a hill, and then it would start turning a profit. Say open for visitors 7 hours each day on average (allowing for bad weather and shorter daylight during winter), so that's a thousand an hour. Now if I was paying £4.50 I would want to take my time enjoying the amazing views, and there's also the gift shop and cafe inside where I would spend time. I reckon half an hour at the top, and then I might be half an hour at least in the cafe with my cappuccino and cake, excitedly discussing with my friends how wonderful the experience had been.

Mmmm... Might get a bit crowded with on average 500 people up the top and another 500 in the cafe. And that's before it made a penny profit, at the original 3 million budget. Think it would be quite interesting to see the financial plan for the project, which would of course have to be voted on and signed off by the council before even starting the building work...

(Note: By comparison the Eden Project in Cornwall pre covid was getting about 4000 visitors a day on average, I went on a fairly quiet day in October and it still seemed reasonably crowded. That place is flapping huge, just one of the domes is maybe a 100 times the floor area of the marble arch hillock. In order to ever make a profit the mound would have to be packed shoulder to shoulder like sardines...)

It's even trickier since they've had to refund people + they're now making the shitty hill free until the end of August.

I just realised the real problem. They never stuck a flag on top of it. That would surely have fixed any problems with it.
