U.K. media’s relationship with the truth.

I read the headline of the Daily Express online this morning and is claims our economy speeds ahead. Now I agree the economy is growing back but estimates from analysts state is will still be shrunk by 4-5% since pre-pandemic. The article claims we’re ahead of the US when in fact whilst the growth isn’t as fast in the US at this very moment their economy is now 4-6% bigger than it was pre pandemic. So way ahead of us.

A few days ago the same rag claimed the pound was “rocketing” when in fact it moved .75% of a cent. Hardly Apollo territory.

Is the true picture of the actual situation no longer important in our news? Is it just agenda, agenda, agenda?

Other posters mention reading foreign news sites for a balanced view. Is the reality we now read foreign news for the truth?

Whatever news you read it will never be totally politically unbiased even the foreign news channels but people have to think for themselves and decide what slant they are putting on it.

I don't think it matters where you get your news from anymore. If it chimes in with what you want to believe then you will claim that it's accurate, if it doesn't then you will claim that it's just propaganda

In reality who actually does their own in depth research on news articles to find out what the facts are

So true.

Plenty of examples on the forums here to back that up

Can we just all decide once and for all that the DM seldom reports real, truthful news.

It's a gutter press of the highest calibre.

Newspapers are just like any other business. They want to make money by selling papers. They do it by writing what their readers would want to read. At best, they just hide the truth or use verbal gymnastics to get around the truth. At worst, they twist the truth itself.

On a side note, size of the economy is not the right scale to compare countries with such a big difference in population.

"Whatever news you read it will never be totally politically unbiased even the foreign news channels but people have to think for themselves and decide what slant they are putting on it."

But isn’t the problem that to think for yourself you have to go searching for the truth. I realise newspapers are bias but in the past it was just the opinion page. Now it’s the whole paper which manipulates the truth to make the news appear totally different.

It’s poor journalism but it’s also worrying that our press doesn’t give us reality only what their view is and like the other poster mentioned what we want to read as truth to make us feel vindicated.

I just think the express and the mail to a lesser extent are lying by bending the truth to suit not telling the whole truth.

The fact that 200million people read the mail online and believe it to be honest is worrying.

Sadly a lot of people believe it to be the whole truth and are oblivious to the reality.

I agree the comparison comment so why would they do it without agenda?

Yes true , Karen and her mate Putin have a lot to answer for.

Before his fall from grace Martin Bashir did a documentary on how much information and influence on news the big IT giants such as Facebook had on the US voters. It was amazingly detailed and terrifying at the same time.

They knew how people were thinking and the huge party budgets were targeted at those thoughts with more re-enforcing lies.

I guess one metric is to look at complaints to IPSO (as crap as it is), There has been a steady increase in complaints over the last few years.

You can also see where these complaints fall. With the Jewish Chronical and the Daily Mail leading the pack lately (neither are what you would call left leaning).

I don't believe there to be a political spectrum of complaining. Some people have a tendency to complain, others don't.

But I would imagine it evens out, but it doesn't really matter. Whether it's 10,000 complaints per lie, or one, as long as someone complains then if the complaint is upheld I think it's a reasonable measure.

There are activists on both side who seem to quite happily spend their time looking for this sort of thing.

There have also been other independent studies from universities etc.

I think that most people accept that the media only reports a version of the truth that either suits their pockets or their masters.

People then decide what to take from this - some will believe it verbatim whilst others will take it with a pinch of salt.

The sad thing is that we have to actually do this. Perhaps we always had to but did not realise.

With the advent of the internet, forums such as this, social media etc. it gets even more complicated and separating fiction from fact becomes even more difficuilt.

Goverment spin machines make full use of this in influencing public opinion but then, they probably always did however, it has never before been as easy.

One paper writes the economy is x% lower than pre pandemic levels with no mention of current growth/ recovery.

Another paper writes the economy is growing rapidly at x% with no mention that it is below pre pandemic levels.

Both stories are true but conveniently miss out certain other related information.

I agree there was bias Costa but the twisted reporting was never on a scale like today.

If the papers bit at a politician they did it en masse and they resigned.

They would tell the truth and complain about it but today they basically hide the truth.

Where’s the Russia report?

Where’s the PPE VIP list ?

Hancock can keep his emails private?

Never mentioned. Serious issues seemingly totally ignored. These few issues go to heart of honest open government .

I don’t want this to be about Boris bashing you know my views. But I think to not be challenging our government in power on something so serious is not healthy.

This has been going on forever newspapers are in competition to sell news its not new at all.

No it hasn’t not like we have today. It’s much worse in the last 10-15 years and I include Tony Blair’s success in this. Recent.y the two right wing papers have gone to another level.

But it's that the point, how are you supposed to know if they've gone to another level?

And presumably the left wing news doesn't lie or lie by omission at all"

I think all newspapers are bias as I said but there must be a line whereby we don’t end up with the us versions of the truth which in effect is lies. Fox News reporting cheating on the votes until in the end they had to come clean and deny it as they were threatened by legal action from the counting

company.

The us political parties buy news reports to release . It’s possibly why trump was so popular because a national news company helped him lie.

The China virus is a flu and don’t worry about staying at home. Etc etc.. the media carried his message which was a pack of lies.

We get the policies we deserve and we get the media we deserve.

I'd imagine a paper that did proper journalism would die in weeks. Ditto a balanced paper. Especially one that is accessible to the masses.

People don't want it just look at GB news they put both sides of an argument across nobody is interested.

People have got so used to google, facebook, twitter etc that target them with things that re enforce their beliefs they can no longer get a balanced view.

I guess one metric is to look at complaints to IPSO (as crap as it is), There has been a steady increase in complaints over the last few years.

You can also see where these complaints fall. With the Jewish Chronical and the Daily Mail leading the pack lately (neither are what you would call left leaning).

It could be said that because right wing publications have more complaints, equals they lie more.

It could be said that left wing readers like to complain more.

It's not a true indication for me, who is to argue that either of the above statements is correct?

Yes, that was a mistake. I had intended to say upheld complaints. Which is a slightly different measure.

So the quantity of complaints is no longer an issue.

The same rule applies for me.

Do right wing publications lie more or do left wing readers complain more?

I don't believe there to be a political spectrum of complaining. Some people have a tendency to complain, others don't.

But I would imagine it evens out, but it doesn't really matter. Whether it's 10,000 complaints per lie, or one, as long as someone complains then if the complaint is upheld I think it's a reasonable measure.

There are activists on both side who seem to quite happily spend their time looking for this sort of thing.

There have also been other independent studies from universities etc.

Maybe you are correct.

Any idea why IPSO don't regulate The Guardian, Independent or the FT?

Isn't it opt in? And the above have chosen not to. What that says about them or ipso, not sure.

"

Yes, I think at the time IPSO was seen as a way of nodding to Leveson, whilst avoiding some of it's more strict recommendations.

I've not watched GB news as I find TV is difficult to get full details. I like hunting down sources. But I don't get the sense GB news is in depth journalism. Seems like LBC on TV. (To repeat, my sense from what I have read, not experienced).

I look at covid. Which news outlets have explained in detail the risks of a jab versus the risk of covid in any meaningful way. Have they discussed yellow flags and the level of data being collected ? I've seen little outside of the FT. Mainly it was turned political one way or another. No actual analysis.

Not that long ago, you had to make an effort to uncover facts and for many people that was too much of an effort and so they relied on the stories written in newspapers and probably accepted the leaning of the narrative. People tended to invest in one newspaper a day and that was their source of news other than what they watched a 6pm or 10pm on the TV.

The situation today is bizarrely different and suggests that it is our (the consumers) attitudes that dictate the type of news that we want to consume. It has never been easier to uncover the facts of a story and you don’t even have to invest in buying two or more actual newspapers to get both sides of a story. Unfortunately, people seem to have chosen not to want facts and instead they can now curate and consume only the type of news that they want to read and gorge on it. It is almost as if the desire for a balanced view no longer even exists with some people and they only want pre-existing notions to be cemented in place.

I think that this is why politics has become so tribal. People are identifying (either way) with concepts of things like Nationalism, Racism, Equality, Social Awareness etc and doubling down on their attitudes by only consuming the news stories that reinforce their opinion.

The internet really is a wonderful thing, but I am not wholly convinced that the way news can be curated for consumption is a particularly healthy development. Buying (and reading) one newspaper that is aligned to your way of thinking is one thing, but having the ability to curate newspaper stories from multiple media outlets that only fit that single agenda is tantamount to subjecting yourself to a never ending stream of propaganda.

It is no secret that propaganda works, it has worked all over the world and it continues to work. Just how dangerous it must be for some people to subject themselves to this and not realise what they are doing to themselves?

I totally get this. I too get called a lefty because I drew a line at the slippage of true conservative politics into rabble rousing. My line was at David Cameron simply because of his promise of an EU referendum. The Conservative Party has changed beyond recognition since 2010 and is not a reflection of the Party that I have voted for most of my adult life.

The majority of my posts are anti Boris and the rampant abuse of power running through this government. I also call out the parachuting in of mp candidates restricting true democracy as your told who to vote for. Over 50% of MPs are now selected this way by both labour and conservative. Those MPs tow the central party line and pay lip service to their local constituencies. So in effect nearly half of the two biggest parties in parliament are controlled by two offices in London. That’s not democracy.

So your mistaken in your assumption. I’ll vote for who’s best for the country not just me.

I read foreign financial reports along with statistics etc so had to do homework to see how far from the full truth the papers were. The fact they can publish data as full fact when it’s not the whole truth is blatantly misleading and needs challenging.

But how are you deciding which news outlets are being dishonest? If the only thing to go on is other news outlets

And of course it's no coincidence that you're left leaning and you just so happen to think that the right wing media is worse

It's this sort of tribal thinking that has allowed a wedge to be driven right through the middle of our society

What makes you say I’m left leaning?

As I’ve said repeatedly I’ve voted conservative many times but couldn’t bring myself to vote for the liar Boris . I’m anti Brexit .. where’s the left leaning you’re accusing me of?

You’re making stuff up! A bit like the newspapers.

I expect a conservative or labour press release to be biased but our media shouldn’t be in anyone’s pocket as are many of our newspapers and media outlets. Rupert Murdoch wasn’t called the king maker by accident!

I think it was a fair assumption to make given the nature of most of your posts but I'm happy to take your word for it

The question I have still remains, how is anyone supposed to know when the left wing or the right wing media are being dishonest when all we have to go by is other media outlets

I think there are 2 main problems.

1 The lack of accountability for lying in UK news media. It's incredibly rare they're truly punished for lying. At most, they tend to just print an apology or pay a settlement. And those are after the damage has already been done.

2 Who's in charge. A handful of v rich men seem to own a shitload of our news media. Most prominently, Murdoch. (Effectively, that man has run this country far more than any PM.) And the Tories have rammed the BBC management with Tories to stifle criticism of the government.

"Whatever news you read it will never be totally politically unbiased even the foreign news channels but people have to think for themselves and decide what slant they are putting on it.

And presumably the left wing news doesn't lie or lie by omission at all

I think all newspapers are bias as I said but there must be a line whereby we don’t end up with the us versions of the truth which in effect is lies. Fox News reporting cheating on the votes until in the end they had to come clean and deny it as they were threatened by legal action from the counting

company.

The us political parties buy news reports to release . It’s possibly why trump was so popular because a national news company helped him lie.

The China virus is a flu and don’t worry about staying at home. Etc etc.. the media carried his message which was a pack of lies.

But then you may as well have just posted a thread about how right wing news outlets are liars and be done with it

That's true, we do need to have a governing body with some serious teeth. Quite often I find what they say is not strictly untrue but misleading on how they say it. Much further up this thread I gave 2 examples of the same story to show how easy its done. Media of all political leanings are guilty of it

It's also worth looking at the political leanings of the what the Google search engine serves up to the top of its search results. So much "content" and its placement and availability is Agenda driven. Its what happens when we demand infotainment "stories" by celebrities rather than news articles by qualified journalists accountable to editors who fact check what they publish.

how much of Google is driven by user data ? If I were Google I'd push results you want to see to get the clicks.

I know google pushes a lot of stuff at me that I have no interest in... One example being non stop news from the left wing guardian.. Googles promotions are very sophisticated but click history may be one part of it. It's quite eye opening to search Googles political basses.
