A head of state is a useful role to have filled by a (mostly)non-political figurehead though. But I'd like a bit of a rewrite regarding some of their perks of the job! Charles was a better/worse King than William because he brought in more/less tourist money? The Queen could be replaced by a cardboard cut-out: she “instructs” Parliament in a Speech which the Government has prepared based on the Electorate’s votes (quite rightly) and rubber-stamps the Royal Assent turning a Bill into law (and mostly even that isn’t needed). BUT, she represents our country, is the basis of our legal (Regina vs. etc) and diplomatic systems (Ambassadors represent the Monarch), and is in herself a remarkable woman. For example, at the time of Diana’s death she was faced with the choice of maintaining the Establishment way of doing things (she refused to lower the flags at Windsor and the Tower because Diana had been stripped of her HRH title) or bowing to populist pressure and acknowledging the “people’s princess”. In the end she managed a quite reasonable compromise. She didn’t handle the 1992 fire at Windsor Castle quite so well though, demanding at first that the public should pay for the repairs. Good Old Tony (Blair) had to get her out of that hole. My heart tells me that UK taxpayers should continue to maintain the Monarch (and the “heir and a spare”, all the other civil listers a different matter) in the style and splendour befitting the Head of State of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But my head tells me that when William and Kate arrive on the scene we might just as well have had Posh and Becks represent us to the World…" I believe research was done many years ago saying the attraction of the queen with her palaces , guards etc does bring in more revenue that she costs . Not sure the hangers on are quite so well documented. I like an independent head of state but not sure how we would replace the Queen without it becoming a political pile of shite similar to Parliament. Who could we vote for? Who is independent in reality? Keep the heir and as you say a spare but fuck all the leeches off and castles pass over to the national trust. Then let’s have a monarchy similar in statute to the Scandinavians . Nice people but less of a costly burden and certainly less of a class barrier. | |||

Just like leaving the EU, there hadn't been much interest in it until Farage etc. got enough of the public interested in the idea. That put pressure on MPs, who put pressure on their parties leaderships. The same levers can be pulled for just about any subject. All you need is a good firm grip of the media. | |||
