Haribos

This is the final straw.

German confectionery giant Haribo has said it is struggling to deliver its sweets to shops in the UK because of a shortage of lorry drivers.

It said that like many other producers and retailers, it was "experiencing challenges" that were hitting supplies.

The haulage industry has blamed the pandemic and Brexit for thousands of unfilled HGV driver jobs.

It is official, Brexit makes children cry

Except, they forget to mention that driver shortages are mostly because of online ordering - which has increased driver employment vacancies by 470%.

I have just witnessed a tragic yet hopeful scene in my local supermarket . Young boy, about 8 years old was shopping with his mum

‘Can I have some Haribos mum, please ‘

‘Yes of course son, you have been a good boy’

They went where the Haribos are usually stocked, empty shelves . A tear run downs the boys cheek,

‘Why has this happened ?’ he cries

‘It is because a few silly and mean people voted for Brexit ‘ his mum answers

‘Why would they do such a thing, are they stupid ‘ the boy says through his tears

‘No one knows’ his mum says softly

‘Fuck Brexit ‘ the boy mutters

His mum didn’t scold him, she just smiled abs patted him on the head

‘Yes, fuck Brexit ‘ she said

True story, and hope for the future

"Except, they forget to mention that driver shortages are mostly because of online ordering - which has increased driver employment vacancies by 470%. "

Online has increased massively but the same trucks which previously delivered to the retail stores warehouses now deliver to Amazon etc.

The bulk deliveries of containers rather than through a store’s warehouse system in fact reduces the number of trucks needed. Online hasn’t caused a driver shortage . Eastern European’s going home has caused the issue along with the old age shortage due to an unattractive work role and an ageing U.K. driver pool. The EU drivers filled the gap. . A major haulier in the East Midland who does some of our work confessed he has 300 trucks idle due to the drivers leaving.

There’s no shortage of willing van drivers to help Amazon Boo boo etc or maybe now there is!!

They don't. Only the UK haters do. Kinda ironically and a total inversion of what actually they often try to argue.

Hate they left Europe - while hating the UK for simply being the UK.

Yeah choice is good no argument there, i am also pretty sure all those that voted for brexit never dreamed there would be a issue getting Haribos, but i just think its a bit off to say that all uk made sweets are "crap" and "second rate over priced tat" like you just have to be honest. Foreign workers left the UK drivers list.

The Pandemic meant vacancies rose by 450%.

UK testing centres closed for over nine months. Loosing 30,000 potential drivers last year.

Online ordering became one of the fastest growing industries.

The effect of Brexit on driver availability was miniscule compared to the other factors.

People love to cite what 'fits' their hatred of Brexit just to argue how wrong Brexit was.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) believes there is currently a shortfall of about 60,000 drivers due to around 30,000 HGV driving tests not taking place last year due to the pandemic.

Typically, 72,000 candidates train to become HGV drivers, with 40,000 passing. But only 15,000 were able to complete training last year, the organisation said.

The RHA has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, warning many drivers also returned to their country of origin during extended periods of lockdown and restricted travel, with the vast majority not returning.

He was also quizzed on the issue at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday this week.

Brexit is also playing a part in the shortage, according to the RHA, with many drivers unsure of their rights to work in the UK.

- Hey there's a Pandemic - who knew?

Drivers have left an industry already struggling to recruit. Drivers have not come back due to Brexit. Somerset council bin collection services are 25 driver short out of 180 jobs as drivers head for better paid high jobs.

Brexit has added to the problem by a huge amount. Foreign hauliers don’t want to come to the U.K. in addition to us losing U.K. based drivers. Blaming it on pessimism is just avoiding the fact Brexit has caused problems whether you want to accuse other of hatred is your business. Being at the sharp end I’m telling you how it is . I don’t care how you view it the reality is clear to see.

"30,000 drivers not qualifying last year has absolutely nothing to do with it.

450% increase in vacancies since online ordering has nothing to do with it.

Yea. Gotya'.

(typo)"

Of course a lower number of newly qualified has had an effect . Internet means less truck drivers we’ve already discussed this. So that’s using less drivers.

The economy has shrunk as have sales since before Brexit when it wasn’t an issue so again less drivers. Economy shrunk 10% which if you feed downwards it’s pro rate is roughly 30k drivers so no real effect of no tests.

If a haulier who trains his own apprentices says he’s lost 12% of drivers who have gone home to the EU resulting in 300 trucks standing idle as the young drivers are no longer in the U.K. that’s not related to newly qualified that 300 drivers who have left. They were employed in 2020. Brexit is the reason for them leaving and nothing to do with training. In reality there are 500k HGV drivers in the U.K. so it’s not a qualifying thing at all . It’s a willing worker thing. We’ve sent the willing young ripe drivers packing.

They were free to chose stay and be unwelcome or go hone. They can now work in any country that values them rather than says you have to jump through hoops to stay here.

Big corporates do training . Sadly not enough you g people want the jobs or the commitment.

The employers risk £150k truck plus a valuable cargo’s worth of kit to so done who passed last week. It’s massive risk.

I know someone who just did their ADI direct through the Gov not an employer so I'm sure it's possible for HGV too.

"30,000 drivers not qualifying last year has absolutely nothing to do with it.

450% increase in vacancies since online ordering has nothing to do with it.

Yea. Gotya'.

(typo)

This is where you are wrong these drivers had a choice to stay if they wanted to under the settlement scheme just as everyone else did.If they chose to leave i would deduce from that they were only here temporary anyway and so it would have been a problem sooner or later.

They were free to chose stay and be unwelcome or go hone. They can now work in any country that values them rather than says you have to jump through hoops to stay here. "

BBC have an interview with a West Country haulier. He says that furloughed EU drivers went home, and now they get more money driving in France, Germany and Poland. Hence no need or desire to come back to the UK.

There are no shortage of applicants - there is a shortage of places to get tested because they were shut for over nine months.

The £5-7k cost and risk of failing as shown in your earlier post stops access to a lot of potential recruits "

Haulage is not the only industry over the years, that has preferred to poach staff, rather than train their own.

If anyone runs short of Haribos and your kids are crying

Drop me a message and I’ll send you a Red Cross parcel with some.

Production in the Pontefract factory is still turning tons of sweets out daily and the factory shop is open 6 days a week no shortage here

Hi Cat

Just on your point of the shortage of tests due to Covid. An example of stupidity in this country, certain testing stations are insisting the examiners take their holidays that they didn’t take during Covid in August or September this year or they will lose them . A massive over 70 k driver shortage shortage and this is their attitude. You can’t make this stuff up!

Why not compensate them with cash or carry them over . Bloody ridiculous.

Don’t forget, doctors, nurses, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, forklift drivers. Etc etc . Who knew 25% of forklift drivers in the U.K. are EU nationals. Interesting if that starts to become an issue. The roads will be full of cars doing click and collect from Amazon with aunt Karen having to get ip a ladder to pick her boxes off the top shelves.

Hey Jackal,

Funnily enough, a few people have said to me that they have been allowed to carry some holidays and be paid for others and still work. But overall, they MUST take their entitlement or else. But where working goes over agreed hours, they may just say you HAVE to have it as holiday. Everything it seems is a contract these days.

I think that many companies are now scared of retrospective deals that they do with their staff with regard to entitlements. They just don't want to be hauled before a tribunal in the future with a he said she said scenario. Plus doing deals with large swathes of staff might just not be worth the hassle to HR.

There seems to be a lot of non-flexibility theses days.

You would have thought with it being a government agency they would have not worried too much and just said if you want to work here’s a bonus but please sign this form to say it’s ok and you agreed.

If it’s happening across the country that’s pushing 2-3000 tests lost. And 1400 - 1600 passes.

Crackers !!

Start a 'Bang Bus'.

Mind you, can you see the form for that one . . . Question 1. What do you want the loan for? | A. A 'Bang Bus'.

I used to work inside LA's and Union is everything. It's very hard to make individual deals that tag onto contracts without having to go through a lot of talks and paperwork. CS won't be any different, I imagine.

We need a flexible workforce - but while that can lead to successes, it can also lead to abuses. Union and Government move at the Super Speed of Sloth. lol

Yes and a 60% pass rate so lost 20,000. Of which only three fifths work in transport . Others are councils , fire brigade, cranes etc etc so actual number around 12-14,000 lost. We’re short 70k. It’s been affected by Covid but Brexit is the main driver this year . Excuse the pun.

I feel your pain . Our drivers union rep at the time was a good guy snd very practical. We had a some grumbling off one driver 25 years ago when we first hired Lithuanians. He demanded the union rep come to see me to threaten strikes for employing cheap labour.

After showing that they were on the same pay deal the union reps comment was, “ well in that case I’ll tell the whinging bastard to wind his necks in”

It all calmed own and that was the last problem we had.

Whilst we paid the going rate we always treated the guys well with early finishes for family events or holidays to give them chance to get currency etc. We had go-karting days and barbecues days with families so in the end had a waiting list of drivers. Good memories .

I’m a remainer as you know as I worried about the negatives of Brexit which I’m finding very true . That doesn’t stop me from being a 100% supporter of England.

I hate Brexit

I hate Boris and co

I hate the way we are becoming xenophobic in this country and we think we are more important than we are.

I want my national football team to win something in my lifetime . I am a fan of Southgate not because he’s the best manager I’ve ever seen but he’s given a pride back to our national team and given us at least a little tiny glimmer of maybe just maybe !!

So fuck left and right wing …

I’m a remainer as you know as I worried about the negatives of Brexit which I’m finding very true . That doesn’t stop me from being a 100% supporter of England.

I hate Brexit

I hate Boris and co

I hate the way we are becoming xenophobic in this country and we think we are more important than we are.

I want my national football team to win something in my lifetime . I am a fan of Southgate not because he’s the best manager I’ve ever seen but he’s given a pride back to our national team and given us at least a little tiny glimmer of maybe just maybe !!

So fuck left and right wing …

COME ON ENGLAND !!! well said jackal mate and good for you COME ON ENGLAND We have the British and Irish lions to support today too.

COME ON THE LIONS."

Very true and even more poignant to get behind our unified countries!!

"I have just witnessed a tragic yet hopeful scene in my local supermarket . Young boy, about 8 years old was shopping with his mum

‘Can I have some Haribos mum, please ‘

‘Yes of course son, you have been a good boy’

They went where the Haribos are usually stocked, empty shelves . A tear run downs the boys cheek,

‘Why has this happened ?’ he cries

‘It is because a few silly and mean people voted for Brexit ‘ his mum answers

‘Why would they do such a thing, are they stupid ‘ the boy says through his tears

‘No one knows’ his mum says softly

‘Fuck Brexit ‘ the boy mutters

His mum didn’t scold him, she just smiled abs patted him on the head

‘Yes, fuck Brexit ‘ she said

True story, and hope for the future

It's incredibly simple: employers have to make themselves sufficiently attractive to attract the staff they need.

They've had a free ride for too long with low-cost Poles and Romanians. Both those groups have realised they have been exploited and their numbers have reduced.

Employers are now having to increase wages. This is already happening and is a very good thing.

It's the most basic law of economics.

"This is the final straw.

It is official, Brexit makes children cry "

Bad for the teeth? In my experience as a bus driver, children do only one thing with Haribos. Throw them at each other, crush them into the bus floor and laugh at bus drivers who complain about having to scrape them up afterwards.

Hope that helps.

So, they got a factory in Brexitannia, customers in Brexitannia, massive amounts of unemployed sheeple in Brexitannia, yet they can't get the staff or the ingredients to make haribos and deliver them to supermarkets across Brexitannia?

This is because lorry drivers have suffered years of employers using cheap labour from Poland/Romania to force down wages?

"Some people are still very bitter

Yep.

Why are they ‘bitter’ ?

I should rephrase , why do you think they are bitter "

I can't speak for everybody, but I can speak for myself. The reasons I am bitter about the whole Brexitannia shambles are as follows:-

1 My great grandfather went to Belgium to fight for your right to freedom. Leaving aside the covid regulations, I can now no longer decide on a Friday tea time to jump into my car and visit his grave on Saturday morning. I've got a whole list of shit to get together before I set off. He lies within earshot of the Menin Gate.

2. My local supermarket no longer carries all the items in stock which I need to make a simple recipe because there is now a shortage of truck drivers, because we sent the Europeans home and the Brits are too god damn idle or embarrassed to be a truck driver.

3. Brexitannia is now doing deals around the world to import chicken, beef, fruit, vegetables, half way around the globe by either aeroplanes or heavy fuel burning container ships, because that is supposed to be cheaper / better / tariff free, than trucks using the electrified channel tunnel.

4. Because I have personally spent much time with ordinary people in most European countries, chatting about day to day shit. Nowhere is perfect. Jeez, you only need look at the political shitball of Belgium for starters.

5. Because the full name of our Prime Minister is Alexander (Greek) Boris (Russian / Slavic meaning "small; battle glory") de Pfeffle (a German & Bavarian family, our Boris could be related to the first female French Open doubles champion) Johnson (a name of English and Scottish origin)

So, Our Boris is of Greek / Russian / Slavic / German / English / Scottish decendency. Interesting. Bet this doesn't reach front page of daily fail or daily sexpress or the sun in the mirror of stars.

Shall I keep on going, or is that enough for you to chew over for now?

Bitter, Yep.
