"The use of the term 'white privilige' is not helpful and it contributes so 'systematic neglect' in the schooling of children from low income white families says a Select Committee of MPs. I wonder if this term should be consigned to history. " No Tom, it shouldn’t. Mainly because it’s still very much a thing. The focus should be on poor families of all ethnic backgrounds, irrespective or race

"The term may or may not be helpful, but is isn't why children are suffering. That's because of a decade of Tory cuts. This is just an attempt to shift the blame. Tories love to try and stir up culture wars for this reason. " Exactly this, the way our government has always worked is divide and conquer. "It’s true though. But maybe should be relabelled white middle class privilege? Many of our working class are certainly on the bottom rungs of society too." Privilege is intersectional. So white people have privilege because of their ethnicity (largely), middle class people for their socioeconomic status. A white poor person and a black middle class person both have privilege, just different privilege. They all combine in different ways in different people.

"I find it crazy that only a year after the BLM protests, we’re seeing reports asking to redress the balance back towards white people. “That’s enough talking about white privilege, it’s upsetting us. Can we focus on giving the white people attention again now please?” It’s about as tone deaf as it can get and completely ignores any wider social issues or the impact that this report will have on any anti racism action" It's telling, isn't it?

The poor performance of working class or underclass whites has been debated for decades if not centuries. Now to confuse this with race smells of smoke and mirrors to me. Nonetheless it needs further attention. Universities , bellies and minds weren't miraculously filled and transformed under any government. It'd be best to look for solutions instead of finger pointing. No finger pointing gets things done.

"The problem is class privilege, regardless of colour or where you’re from. Working class are always left in the lurch and have to mainly fend for themselves with not much help from any government of any party." I fully agree with this. The challenge is that with any structure there is still a hierarchy and the constant rhetoric from the S*n, Daily Mail, MPs and their partners (see Dido Harding’s comments on the reliance on foreigners in the NHS) helps perpetuate a feeling, sense or belief of superiority and them and us even among the poorest of the working classes

And where do you think that comes from? Our government set the tone for what they want society to be. Whether it's class, race, religion or sex; there is always something out there to cause divide. The people who live in ignorance then take that information and create the divide. Can we focus on giving the white people attention again now please?” It’s about as tone deaf as it can get and completely ignores any wider social issues or the impact that this report will have on any anti racism action It's telling, isn't it? I’m absolutely appalled that the BBC covered it in the manner that it has, I’m not surprised that the bastion of white privilege has published this report though. I’m also not surprised that Tom posted this thread, I’m sure he saw the headlines and salivated " Yes, this has been my biggest problem with the reporting. The words used on the BBC news just now were "A group of MPs" no mention that it was a majority group of Tory MPs, or that other members of the committee are disowning the report saying the data were cherry picked... It's not even factual, Romany/Traveller children are actually the poorest performing. The key to it all is low-income, un-related to your race/ethnicity. But even that is to over-simplify the whole issue. Schools and educationalists have been struggling with these problems for decades. Things were improving, whilst a "whole family" approach was being taken (things like Sure Start etc.), but funding for these types of schemes has been leeched away...

"Well money certainly isnt an issue with the traveller community, they have plenty to buy top of the range caravans and range rovers etc to pull them, of course if you steal and con most of your income, pay no taxes etc you wont be hard up. Maybe we should be looking at the attitude of parents, " ‘Steal and con ‘ most of your income? Any evidence to back this up or is it the usual ignorant stereotyping?

Across the board, low-income generally affects families generationally, with low engagement with education. A parent that did not do well at school, is not in a great position to support their children. It's a difficult cycle to address, without targeted programs tailored for the issue, but that takes money...

However, our children excel. The reason for this?? Our want to make sure they did better than us, teach them young and teach them well. Far too many parents think schools and schools alone should be teaching their children. This for me is the largest issue, and what we need to address.

Yes I fully accept that if you arent that clever it can be hard to help your own kids, however surely one of the biggest responsibilities of being a parent is to ensure your kids get on, even if they cant do much themselves ensuring their kids work hard, do their homework or even attend school is very easy, teachers in my experience are always willing to help. It's much easier for people to blame something else than look in the mirror

You would probably concede that you were at a disadvantage though. One you overcame, but not everyone is able to overcome these types of hurdles. "It’s true though. But maybe should be relabelled white middle class privilege? Many of our working class are certainly on the bottom rungs of society too. Privilege is intersectional. So white people have privilege because of their ethnicity (largely), middle class people for their socioeconomic status. A white poor person and a black middle class person both have privilege, just different privilege. They all combine in different ways in different people." This. I'd also like to add that this is old news. There were reports of working class white children (boys mainly) failing at secondary school around five to ten years ago. Education should be working for everyone but due to government neglect, this is not the case. The problem is instead of improving our schools overall, they've flagged that working class white children shouldn't be underperforming compared to children of working class immigrants. So it's not "systematic neglect" of low income white families. The schools have always been messed up. It's the government's weak attempt of putting a lazy arm around the people whose children they were going to let go hungry, had it not been for Marcus Rashford. The truth is when "privilege" stops working, you look at everything else in more detail, as the person has highlighted above.

They all combine in different ways in different people. This. "Not sure that the govt will see it as in their interest to fix this. There seems to be a strong inverse correlation between quality of education for this group and the number of Tory votes they provide. I think they would prefer to spend money (if they haven't spent it all on Serco et al) on grammar schools / academies / giving charitable tax breaks to private schools. " Dumb people vote Tory.... I think that "dumb people" don't just vote Tory. Using the word "dumb" is quite offensive, though - it refers to a particular medical condition, otherwise known as "mutism". Not something to make fun of for people suffering this condition.

"They quite literally "made that shit up"." Which bit was made up? The increasing support for the right wing parties amongst C2DE voters? That is real (took about 20 seconds on Google to confirm). The decreasing support for the Tory's amongst graduates? Also real (young graduates are pretty much the only reliable part of the Labour vote atm - though beginning to shift to the Greens) So it makes sense for the Tories, assuming they are cynical enough (of which I have no doubt) to ensure that the C2DE votes remain under-educated. Or were you questioning the claims about their funding preferences? Academy schools - which siphon off more public funds to their supporters, the charitable status of private schools, allowing them to be VAT exempt. These are facts. The revival of grammar schools was merely (as stated) a preference (of Theresa May - remember her?). So which bit was made up?

While people of colour get to go for free. Black only areas at the CHAZ and other no-go areas Thats the US ofcourse but we always mirror what they do later. Plus this rot has infected people here. As we see in the forums Im sure i could find examples in this country, most likely in student unions or something

Boom To be fair that decision was non descriminatory...noone got free meals in the holidays Yes they did https://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/2020/oct/southwark-council-to-pay-for-free-school-meals-over-half-term Apart from Southwark Council.. what have the councils done for us ? It doesnt matter You said " none got free meals in the holidays " The link proves your statement, to be categorically wrong . So lots got free meals.. what's to worry about then.. The fact that some people are so poor That councils & government have to help feed them ? Are you following the thread, or are you just writing for the sake of writing ?Isn't that what they are there for helping the poorest in society? I though they were there to Govern the people to aspire to bigger & better things . Not to be so poor you have to rely on handouts to be fed . Still if thats how you view the UK That is upto you . This is the UK. Always has been Always will be Get used to it Get used to the UK being a Nation unable to provide work or a living standard for people To feed themselves ? Thats not what I think of the UK . I think it is better than that Sorry if you disagree .Why should i get used to that when it wont happen?" I think they confused you with me

"The use of the term 'white privilige' is not helpful and it contributes so 'systematic neglect' in the schooling of children from low income white families says a Select Committee of MPs. I wonder if this term should be consigned to history. " If you think words "white privilege" is a problem then you are in for a treat Coming down the line and already in most of our schools / education is - Full blown CRT (the most dangerous invention ever made) - how to abolish whiteness - whiteness is white supremacy - your baby is racist (if white) - if you are not anti racist and actively not warning people about whiteness then you are a white supremacist If you dont agree with the above then you are probably a white supremacist The left, the right and every big corporate firm, big tech and all institutions are fully on board with it. They have realised that there are so many self loathing "white people" who are 100% on board with it so have used their weakness to further the agenda. This is all now going main stream , the full antiwhite machine is full stream ahead and it will get much much worse Enjoy ??

CRT isn't taught in schools in the US (where this latest right wing panic originates), let alone here in the UK. And it's certainly not what you describe.

"Daily Mash:. The white person's guide to being a dick about your white privilege 24th June 2021 A REPORT has suggested that the idea of ‘white privilege’ is holding white children back. This is probably bollocks, but why not get angry about it anyway? Here’s how. Blame all your problems on anti-white prejudice Do you work in a tedious office instead of, say, being a billionaire with a big, tacky yacht? This is clearly due to people pointing out that racial discrimination is a thing, and not your mediocre GCSE results. Ignore the obvious benefits of being white You can drive a BMW without endless police stops. You can go on public transport without some wanker telling you to ‘go home’ despite the fact you were born in Worcestershire. ‘Count your blessings’ is the sort of trite rubbish your mum comes out with, but sometimes it’s true. Furiously go on Twitter Don’t bother to consider the whole issue, just type nonsense like ‘When will us Angle Saxons be treated equelly in are own country?’ It’s a proven fact that the most effective way to improve your life – and society in general – is to rant about something on the endless hate-filled snake pit that is Twitter. Believe everything you read Culture war bullshit is clearly beneficial to the Tories and newspapers who want clicks. Don’t think about this. Instead assume every media story is 100 per cent true, eg. schools are going to ban The Very Hungry Caterpillar for not being a Rastafarian because some strange Tory MP said so. Don’t do anything constructive F**k that. Don’t help your kids with their homework. Instead nurture a deep sense of grievance that you’re being persecuted for being white when your biggest actual real-life problem is needing to get your boiler serviced." This.
