“The European Parliament president David Sassoli has invited MEPs to reflect on the institution's future - opening a broad debate about the best way forward after the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Time to rethink parliamentary democracy and our work," Sassoli recently wrote on Twitter.”

Rethink democracy... lol we will watch with amusement how that pans out...

I thought the EU (as opposed to Brussels) had already "re-thought" democracy and decided it wasn't a good idea. The EU parliament is little more than a rubber stamp for the unelected (appointed ex/failed politicians mostly) commissioners.

No wonder people voted to leave the EU. This kind of gross misunderstanding based on decades of misinformation is prevalent.

Exactly my thoughts too and my main reason for wanting to leave.

Their usual answer to anything 'EU' is more of the same. I won't be holding my breath waiting for meaningful, positive, reform.

Nope, the Commission was once a meritocracy, staffed by the best brains in Europe. But just like our Civil Service vs. Westminster, it's only the big mouths at the top who make the newspaper headlines.

Now unfortunately, both the Commission and Parliament go along with whatever the European Council decides. Even the Commission President doesn't get a vote!

The UK is a beacon of democracy

What with a democratically elected House of Lords

And a Head of state who gets there on merit as opposed to a quirk of birth
