"Why the expat retirement dream could be gone forever"

I really thought I was seeing things, or maybe imagining it.

But no.

A newspaper that campaigned to end retirement dreams in sunny Spain is now mourning the end of retirement dream in Spain.

As I said, astonishing.

Then again, it could be completely wrong and just another lefty, remoaning type of newspaper article, printed in a lefty remoaning type of newspaper.

It was really heartbreaking to see those Brexit voters being turfed out of Spain tbf

Are they not bringing in something where even if you live abroad for like 6 years, you still get a vote,?

Exactly - sometimes irony is difficult to put across in plain text.

Irony - is not wanting to leave just so that they can leave.

The dream is still alive, if you have the correct size retirement pot then you can still live there.

"The dream is still alive, if you have the correct size retirement pot then you can still live there."

That is exactly correct. Post-Brexit and the ability to do this is a few more rings up the demographic ladder.

The article referred to was in the money ( not the politics section ) . Covid 19 had a significant impact on peoples decisions about retiring abroad. Other concerns included pensions and the provision of healthcare .

On a simplistic basis retiring abroad has become harder and requires more planning and the patience to tackle bureaucracy.

No one is prevented from retiring abroad , you simply have to do a little more work. In one case it was the perfect excuse to stay in the UK as the ladies husband was not keen on the idea in any event .

The one big difference is the real deal breaker for many Brits and that is the 90/180 rule. If you want better than that, you need to get residency and with residency comes mandatory tax residency.

There is nothing simplistic about that. It is a terrible place to be for Brits who just want to spend the winter in Spain.

It is another pointlessly needless consequence of an ideologically driven Brexit.
