Ch4 news poll shows the top reason people didnt vote for labour was because of starmer.

He has already alienated a big chunk of the left ,whilst his supporters think the answer is to move even more towards the right.

Meanwhile bookies have Burnham as the odds on favourite to succeed him

They have a policy. Everybody that earns over 70k as a single person despite having a partner who earns nothing is "rich" and needs to pay more tax as is anybody who has saved for retirement with a pension fund. It's the threat about excessive taxation to create fairer societies that make them unelectable in recent years.

Tower Bridge South

Conservatives lost their majority on Cambridgeshire County Council after Labour didn't field candidates in 6 key seats. Lib Dems took all of them.

BBC link: https://t.co/9W9oFDpKvd

It wasn't an official electoral pact but this is how you get change. Labour have spent too many years arguing about with themselves about who has the reddest underpants, meanwhile Johnson persuades poundland Hitler to stand down candidates. Result? 80 seat majority. Neither end of Labour have been willing to compromise on anything. It's like watching Newcastle players fighting on the pitch in the 90s.

Austerity 2 is almost certainly on the way and our best chance of avoiding it is ruined because people on the same side let their egos get in the way of progress.

Far far away

Socialism in theory is the best way to live, the problem comes as soon as greedy, self serving, power hungry humans factor into the mix, who pretty quickly they deserve more than the peasants in the village. IMHO

If labour cannot win a majority by itself, as it's so proven then how do you expect a coalition of three parties to work? Labour and the greens I can just about see, although their policies would have to move a lot closer, the SNP would be too nationalistic with their policies. Good for Scotland perhaps but not so for the majority. The arguments between the three parties would not lead to good governance. Just to get the Tories out! Nose and face come to mind. For your info, I've not voted Tory in a ge for many years.

Labour won't recover in time for the next election. Particularly as nobody seems to be making noises about removing SKS presently. Noticeably they have already started arguing amongst themselves, with even one resigning! And even if they do start the process of leadership change, there will be an internal war and then a path to peace, and then they will have to try to convince the public they are fit for office again. While looking back at the mess they were in. There is no type of crocodile smile that can hide that from voters. That kind of softening of feeling towards them will take time.

Thursday 2 May 2024, Next UK GE. It's just not happening for Labour.

Without a doubt ,they are in the wilderness..some problems are through their own making, some out of their control.

They have lost Scotland to the snp and their core support in the north has fragmented.

The big cities have largely ,stayed loyal whilst the smaller cities have increasingly felt disenfranchised over the last 20 years, and have drifted over to the far right policies of ukip,Brexit and the tories.

Anyone who thinks this is nothing to do with immigration is deluded

Whilst the party themselves is massively split between moving more to the right or retaining the more social Democratic policies of the corbyn era.

Some of the 'red wall' constituencies and places like Hartlepool have been left behind and that includes during the time of Blair's project, can fully understand why they might think let's try the other lot..

That's not to say i think the Tories genuinely will level up the north and other parts of the country, time will tell..

If they do then Labour however much it comes back to the centre will be in opposition a while yet..

Not people who want a real alternative, or any new fresh exciting policies and ideas.

Disclaimer. My observation I'm not ridiculing anyone.

From my observation over the last two decades. David Miliband is the only person right now who associate with the Labour party that can win back power form the Tories. The majority of the British public don't really care about the message but rather very keen on the messenger. The messenger most have certain characteristics including big personality, energetic, presentable, easy on the eyes or looking very good on television, assertive, adopt a three word slogan that easily resonate with people. knows how to conducted themself on television by looking directly in and speaking in the camera and not to the reporter sideways. Majority of the British people love celebrity so the leader have to can fit in that category.

Look at some comparison Gordon Brown VS Divid Cameron. Gordon Brown didn't have any of the above, he makes allots of people cringe looking at him on television. Cameron VS Ed Miliband. People associate Ed Miliband has a nerd.

Theresa May VS Jeremy Corbyn. The reason why May narrowly win, people associate her with a frail Auntie against Jeremy Corbyn has a tramp. Keir Starmer will not stand a chance against Boris Johnson, he is too soft and he is tided up with Jeremy over the Brexit. Please don't kill me now it's just my observation I'm not ridiculing anyone.

Not people who want a real alternative, or any new fresh exciting policies and ideas.

Not people who were taken in by Brexit.

Not people who want a right wing sir centre right party in power.

Not the traditional working class support.

Under Corbyn a huge number of young people voted for them, because he at least represented something different.

This has now been pissed away.

Or you could say that Corbyn attracted a good few immature airheads but at the same time alienated the party's core supporters.

You talk as if Corbyn actually won in 2019."

Yep its just the left who throw around derogatory terms

"Without a doubt ,they are in the wilderness..some problems are through their own making, some out of their control.

They have lost Scotland to the snp and their core support in the north has fragmented.

"Conservatives lost their majority on Cambridgeshire County Council after Labour didn't field candidates in 6 key seats.

What they need to do is form a coalition with the greens and the snp.

There is no way they will defeat the tories on their own

"

I'd rather Burnham personally

UKIP policy was to leave the EU, you know like those well known right wingers Kate hoey and years ago those who didnt want to join that good old fascist tony Benn.

Centrist tories include the likes of John major, who has criticised alex in the past, and Kenneth Clark, who was punished by Alex for not voting how he wanted.

They are miles away from Johnson, and if you think he is centrist, God knows what a right wing Tory looks like.

Yes, they did. Via social media and they did it very well. So much so the Tories put a task force on it to look into doing similar.

So it's not ok, for people to be influenced by what you call right wing media, but it's fine to 'mobilise and incentevise' via social media sites aimed at a demographic that will believe what it says on their phones?

As I say, it's down to perception. You look at it from one way, I another. There are others that would back your perception up, as I'm sure there would be others mine. I think the BBC are/were bias which is why I stopped listening/watching, you think a section of the press are bias hence you don't read them. We all lean one way or another, I doubt anyone is ever neutral of unbiased.

Would you like to explain that?

So tony Benn and kate Kate hoey are right wing ?

People on all sides love or loathe the EU try doing your own research on his position your beloved guardian called him centrist and liberal.

I'll take that as a no ,I cant find any centrist policies under Johnson."

"Centrist tories include the likes of John major, who has criticised alex in the past, and Kenneth Clark, who was punished by Alex for not voting how he wanted.

They are miles away from Johnson, and if you think he is centrist, God knows what a right wing Tory looks like.

Try doing a bit of research , the guardian described him as a social libertarian and centrist, look at wiki, always described as to the left of the tory party, but hey you never let facts get in the way before so why change.

Can you provide with a list of centrist policies adopted under the Johnson gmnt?

Look at wiki.... superb

You were the one who claimed alex was a centrist

He has demonized immigrants and looked at putting them on an island in the middle of the Atlantic,he has cut overseas aid, during Brexit he often used ww2 rhetoric,he has done nothing to address the school dinner fiasco,he has frozen public sector pay and sought to make protests practically impossible, including defacing a statue getting 10 years inside.

Let's just say my idea of a centrist and yours are slightly different.

Apparently all Conservative Politics downfalls are about whether or not there are foodbanks!!! in Hartlepool.

At a quick Google I just found at least 17 fodbanks in Liverpool.

Hmmm?

There is just one when searching in Hartlepool.

It will be interesting to see turn out by age. We know under 40s largely vote Labour, but how many actually turn out?

Engaging the youth vote should be another item on Starmer's agenda.

People are looking way too deeply into this.

Corbynism was rejected and now some say that Labour needs to move to the left because being Tory-light is not working. I mean... Come on.

Personally, I think that political honesty and integrity is the way forwards even if it means that a fickle electorate gets swayed by blatant lies because it is what they want to hear.

This country needs a true social Democratic Party and Labour could fill that role quite easily if they were prepared to work together.

Let’s not forget that in 1997, the Conservative Party was on the point of disintegration, but they got their shit together and were ready to pounce after the global financial crisis a decade or so later.

If you simply look at what Johnson has done in the last 12 months it is absolutely obvious that the post Brexit and vaccine delivery bounce shine will fade. Labour just need to be ready for that moment and offer a steady hand, normality and competence.

If people still keep voting against their long-term interests and keep choosing slogans over competence then they (and we all) will get the Governance that is deserved.

Staying loyal to integrity is (in my opinion) more courageous and honourable than changing like the wind to try to gain favour with a fickle electorate.

Why would they want or need to do that? They have a big majority to get their policies through and four years left.

That will only happen when Johnson (or his successor) starts to get pushback from his own Party and starts to struggle to get stuff through Parliament.

Meanwhile bookies have Burnham as the odds on favourite to succeed him

I think Burnham would be very good, with the right team behind he would give “young” Labour voters what we want - a more socialist society that benefits all rather than the few.

Agreed

That's why labour should have focused on the young and spectacularly failed to do so.

However I think the majority of people are not interested in a fair society..we have seen that over the last 4 decades.

As an outsider looking in....

... There is another civil war coming in the Labour Party. Kier "I take full responsibility" Starmer, instead turns on Angela Rayner, much to the annoyance of many. A shadow Cabinet reshuffle is inevitable.

Labour has many very competent and likeable MPs. I list Bridget Phillipson, Rachel Reeves, Stella Creasy and Tulip Siddiq, as many of the ones that I like. Others are there. They could easily appeal to the wider voter base. Andy Burnham speaks with a burning Socialist desire, something I don't see in Kier Starmer.

Labour cannot win a GE on London, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol and Manchester alone. They have to get the North and some of Scotland back. So here's a radical plan. Base themselves in the North and fight from there. London is assured, Sadiq Khan has his second term, go North and and spread the message from there.

What you forget is that cameron supported remain, the lse did a report in april 2016 that showed 52 % of tory mps wanted remain 38 leave and 10 undeclared.

Plenty of senior labour figures also campaigned to leave.

It's not really a party issue, both main sides are split on the issue, at least the tories gave the voters the choice, although it back fired on cameron.

Can you point to any cuts from anyone to the nhs ?

Police funding comes mainly from local government and in our area their budget has increased by at 5 % every year that's under tory control.

The unmentioned issus is the cost of police pensions and allowing them to retire at 55, the same goes for the nhs and most public services, pensions are far far higher than a company could afford or a private one provides, this is where the money goes.

Strange question.

He was a well known journalist and writer:

The Times and The Daily Telegraph: 1987–1994

Political columnist: 1994–1999

The Spectator: 1999–2008

Wrote about ten books, I can recommend “Lend me your Ears 2003”, very insightful.

Can you point me at anything Burnham has written that I should get up to speed on?

Not really as you were asking about Burnham's career.. just not sure how you can be in politics and do another job

Oh what am l saying?many tories seem to manage it.

How did that journalism career end up btw?

I'd forgotten he was a prolific writer

I'd highly recommend the highly semitic book he wrote aswell.

Or at least the reviews on Amazon

When people had no bread they wanted it,when they had bread they wanted cake and labour was there to help.

Wanting more than cake they need the tories.

The people at the bottom are a smaller percentage and often cannot be bothered to vote so labour now becomes obsolete they need a new identity.

Just a thought

"I've just seen a clip from BBC Breakfast which I assume is from Friday morning. Chris Mason interviewing 2 locals from historically labour families but who voted tory. Reason? Sick of labour because of cuts to the NHS, courts and police. But tory voters aren't thick, no not at all...

"

The problem is that journo’s are not challenging what is being said.

It’s like when people are saying that they voted Tory because Labour isn’t for ordinary people any more - when actually asked why, they tend to crumble with their justification - if they do even try to answer at all.

And what the BBC allowed Johnson to get away with after the Hartlepool election was just appalling.

"

What they need to do is form a coalition with the greens and the snp.

There is no way they will defeat the tories on their own"

Add the greens, SNP, DUP. Plaid, LibDems, Uncle Tom Cobley and all....it's still an 80 seat majority.....

"Without a doubt ,they are in the wilderness..some problems are through their own making, some out of their control.

They have lost Scotland to the snp and their core support in the north has fragmented.

The bit I dont get is they felt left behind by new labour as it moved to the centre,so in protest they decided to move for a party who was even more right wing."

Last 11 GE results for labour

Lost, lost, lost, lost, Blair, Blair, Blair, lost. Lost. Lost , lost.....they moved away from Blair or from Corbyn's loony left??

In your opinion, Oasis aren’t even in the top 5 bands from Greater Manchester (in my opinion ) "

Have to agree with you there - Many great bands began life in Manchester.

"End of the day, the accuracy of my predictions (eg war with France) speaks for itself.

Burnham is a clueless regional simpleton who has no appeal outside of his little local echo chamber.

He is the king of Greater Manchester, you need to leave your tiny Weaterham bubble some time , do you have a mayor ?

You're welcome to him. But bear in mind it reflects badly on you.

It doesn’t, great city, great area, great mayor, great football teams, great music, great people . What is Wetterham famous for ?

Eric Coates - often considered a one hit wonder for his Dam Busters March, however there is some fantastic delights in his other works - most notably , London Suite and The Merrymakers

North Bucks

Never been to Manchester. Hope to though love history and it’s got some decent museum.

My father owns a Lowry which I hope to get my grubby mits on one day. So would like to have a look about.

Back on thread. Andy Burnham would be a shrewd appointment that would unite Labour.

Manchester would be sad to see him leave as Mayor but he would make a good labour leader
