Not to pay back the £400 million back in 1979 was utterly ridiculous anyway.

Any other time of politics would have seen Boris resign over such a monumental fuck up.

It wasn't quite that simple at the time though. As there was an embargo on anything to Iran including Weapons. Technology and Money.

It should have been sorted many years later however.

The £400 million owed to Iran, was signed off for repayment by HM Treasury, back in 2002!

EU sanctions meant that it was illegal to pay it but now we no longer part of the EU, then we now can.

However, the situation is further complicated by the upcoming elections in Iran, where the ruling party wish to show a hardline against the West. Once these elections are out of the way, then the money will be handed over and she will be free to return to the UK.

This is all part of a new phenomenon of "hostage diplomacy". Iran, China, North Korea have all taken part and it may become the norm going forward.

Can’t pay it back at the moment because of the US ban on goods and services with Iran…. If they pay it then in essence no uk company can do any business in the US whatsoever

To be fair he will probably get reelected as we have no decent opposition

Yet it didn't stop President Obama paying roughly the same sum to Iran!

The release of four Americans held in Iran was purely coincidental.

We do not know that we assume this, when British people get arrested abroad we allways assume they are innocent.

I think she may well be but we should not assume this.

We will do a deal but we will not give them most of the money we owe them as we cannot afford it right now although the Iranians have a good point we have cheated and stolen from them not the right thing to do

Actually ironically it was for the same reason… it was the money owned to Iran for military sales in 1979 for equipment that never arrived….

It was removed as part of the JCPOA agreement….

It was the trump administration that not only put on the ban when they withdrew from the agreement… they explicitly warned people they would do this if anyone traded with Iran… which is why french oil magnate Total had to pull out of big deals they had for oil drilling

yes ov course they can but as she married a english man then what did she expect from such a backward county she put her self in the firing line so for me no one else to blame not saying what they have done to her is correct but she put herself in the situation so no one else to blame.

The comments from boris before were certainly crass and did not do her case any favors, but what he said is not reason she has been held or is still being held prisoner at all and like someone else said going back to historic tank debt we have been prevented from paying the money to Iran due to sanctions that would have been imposed on us. The Iranians have been disgraceful using a innocent woman as a political bargaining tool.

Crass is a slight understatement.

He was foreign secretary at the time and his comments were utterly astonishing.

Lol ok guess my wording was not strong enough for you, yes they were astonishing for someone in that position I totally agree, my point was more that the reason she is still being detained is not to do with what someone said or didn’t, as I said she is being used as a political tool by the Iranians which is totally wrong.
