Great news this morning. The government have outlined plans to have the Union flag flying on Government buildings every day - not just special days.

About time! Our flag represents freedom, tolerance but most of all, the union between all the countries that make the UK.

Why do people love the flag? Genuinely asking. Surely there are more serious actions to be taken if you’re a patriotic person than hanging a flag?

I don’t think we are taught enough about the history of our country enough in schools and we just sort of go about thinking that we are the world war champions and that should be enough for us as a nation to be respected. There is so much that people from these isles have achieved that you can be proud of without needing to fly the Union Jack which to me, represents elitism and division.

Until recently I worked in social housing and there was a huge amount of work and money put into getting people off the streets during lockdown. Unfortunately a minority are complex cases who are very difficult to house. Also the figures quoted are based on public reports of rough sleepers rather than accurate recording.

Because the same people keep insisting that we start looking after our own but when the rough sleepers, the hungry kids, the overworked scared nurses et al ask for help they're ignored and the fake patriotism is hidden behind a soon to be obsolete flag.

Any criticism is then met with the old favourite" if you don't like it you can leave" quote despite that right having been removed from 27 countries.

Anyone who criticses the ridiculous priorities of this government doesn't mean they love their country any less than someone who loves hanging a bit of cloth from a flagpole!

Hate? Why do you assume that someone who dislikes patriotism and nationalism hates anything, least of all the country they live in?

Personally I have deep mistrust for and dislike of any form of nationalism but I don't hate anyone or anything.

Every single person on this planet is no more or less important than every other, if their 'worth' needs deciding it should be on the basis of their actions not the location of their birth (or any other arbitrary grouping).

The physical geography of the UK is no more or less special than that of anywhere else in the planet (or indeed the universe). The social history likewise.

Historical happenstance and coincidence did indeed lead to the UK being 'in the lead' during the industrial revolution but that in no way implies we are 'Great' anything nor that we have a higher quotient of intelligence, kindness, humanity or indeed a lower quotient of cruelty, selfishness or bigotry.

I personally see no reason to celebrate my nationality and wish that others put a much emphasis on promoting humanity and kindness as they do the belief that an arbitrary line on a map has any meaning whatsoever.

Feel free to call me a turd if you will.

our Government in Cardiff is now called Senedd a Parliment! Point is We in Yes Cymru and Yes Scotland have 39% and 54% who desire not to have the Butchers apron flag anymore! We wish for our independance from this dead Union!

I always find it strange when people get super defensive about their flag. I understand that people are patriotic, but, as far as the Union Jack goes, it’s a flag dripping in the blood of imperialism, colonialism, and empire. To me, a flag is just a piece of cloth that looks great when it’s flying in Olympic ceremonies. But, it becomes a huge problem when people attach nationalism and aggressive patriotism to it without thinking of the grotesque history that it comes with.

Well I'm Welsh and no one asked me this question, so how can that be a sure and certain true percentage of what people want if they aren't asking everyone? Do we really need more division? The world is going mental with division. I want the world to just hold steady for a bit now more than ever.

I don’t think we are taught enough about the history of our country enough in schools and we just sort of go about thinking that we are the world war champions and that should be enough for us as a nation to be respected. There is so much that people from these isles have achieved that you can be proud of without needing to fly the Union Jack which to me, represents elitism and division.

Other Nations are proud to display their emblems and celebrate their National days, but when we do it, it is wrong or elitism....why..., Our past is our past, no better, no worse than every other Nation.

It is only a " Jack " when it is flown from the bow of one of Her Majesty's Warships.

If you are going to slag it off, you might as well get it right.

No better or no worse than any other nation. Tell that to Indians, Kenyans and the Irish. Let’s not forget about the windrush generation. You can be proud of lots of this nations history but completely ignoring some of the worst atrocities simply isn’t good enough.

.... in that time I see yet again this descend into sectarian political rhetoric.

I see it soo often in here, but saddens me to see we live in such a divided fucked up society with no pride in this country or the emblem that is our flag.

After the year we have endured of selfish,self centred, me me, my rights, don’t tell me what to do, blame everyone mentality, it shouldn’t surprise me that such an inoquous comment courts so much division ... but it does!!

Hate? Why do you assume that someone who dislikes patriotism and nationalism hates anything, least of all the country they live in?

Personally I have deep mistrust for and dislike of any form of nationalism but I don't hate anyone or anything.

Every single person on this planet is no more or less important than every other, if their 'worth' needs deciding it should be on the basis of their actions not the location of their birth (or any other arbitrary grouping).

The physical geography of the UK is no more or less special than that of anywhere else in the planet (or indeed the universe). The social history likewise.

Historical happenstance and coincidence did indeed lead to the UK being 'in the lead' during the industrial revolution but that in no way implies we are 'Great' anything nor that we have a higher quotient of intelligence, kindness, humanity or indeed a lower quotient of cruelty, selfishness or bigotry.

I personally see no reason to celebrate my nationality and wish that others put a much emphasis on promoting humanity and kindness as they do the belief that an arbitrary line on a map has any meaning whatsoever.

It was a bit like finding out a bloke living down the road who you'd vaguely recognise as a neighbour has a wall in his house covered in photos of you with pins in their eyes

I think you'll find that this is a fairly common sentiment in England. 20 odd years ago when I moved down here I was amazed at the level of feeling about the English who from my experience largely couldn't give a fig one way or the other. It was a bit like finding out a bloke living down the road who you'd vaguely recognise as a neighbour has a wall in his house covered in photos of you with pins in their eyes

Sadly, what a flag advertises to is not the same as what it advertises to me or anyone else and no amount of believing, or indeed wishing, that a flag is only a symbol of unity will make it so.

Asserting it loudly will not make it so. Think about any country you don't like, what they claim to be, and ask if their flag represents their claims. You'll probably say no.

I thought government buildings have been allowed to do this for years. I'm sure my local council building was doing it but not looked for ages. I remember several years ago there was a big argument when the council refused to fly it stating some law but eventually changed. Anyway good that it can be done. Not sure many countries would not fly their flags

As this hasn’t been an issue since 1606 when it was created (adjusted over time). I can’t see why we are somehow ‘more patriotic’ now because of Brexit.

& if we genuinely are going to have a Union Flag, it is time to put a Dragon on it
