Universal Credit Deductions to pay off old fines

Quite shocking to know that ex homeless people are getting their benefits deducted because they got fined for being vagrants. Leaving them unable to progress forward and out of poverty.

This is just an example of the vicious cycle of poverty that the tories have wrought upon the poor.

How the hell are we supposed to get people on their feet and becoming productive members of society when barriers are put in front of them constantly?

And yet many still vote for this party, what is wrong with them?

This is a hard one.

Should fines be taken from UC? Yes, I believe so. It's supposed to be that benefit officials use discretion when deciding a percentage but have instead imposed a blanket 30% deduction. That's wrong, and rightly so has been found wrong in court.

On this specific topic though, I'd like to see the end to fines for vagrancy.

Some have been deducted upto £20 per week, but it doesn’t sound fair to deduct money for the “crime” of being poor.

Why do the poor get the short end of the stick in general? Universal credit is an example of how to punish the poor further, I wonder how many tory MP’s have been literally poor and living on welfare? Or been on the streets destitute?

They don’t understand, and I fear they never will.

It’s true the tories are the party of rich and those who don’t care.

This is right enough. It is not just a Tory thing - it's a Tory-lite thing, too. It was standard form under the Blair government.

I'm not sure thats what they got fined for.

I'm reading its for offences such as shoplifting, fare evasion etc.

The arguement centres on whether the DWP applied common sense to deductions, rather than a blanket 30% deduction. This level of deduction led people into vagrancy.

The Judge found in favour of tje claimants. The DWP are considering an appeal.

How can you be prosecuted for vagrancy if you have nowhere to live?

That makes no sense.

incorrect. the fines imposed included those issued for begging under the 1824 Vagrancy Act. the individuals involved were former rough sleepers who had moved into settled housing through its Manchester homelessness project. the pernicious actions of the DWP put them in danger of an enforced return to vagrancy. the courts agreed that the DWP were knowingly acting against the law.

80 seat majority enough said. People who vote Tory are silently agreeing with policies which brutalise the poor, they can protest all they want but they put the cross in that ballot paper which says I agree with everything you do.
