No but the Tories sure clapped and cheered when they defeated the bill to give NHS workers a pay rise.

Caring has nothing to do with conservatives.

Mat Handcock stands at the despatch box, praises them whilst wearing his NHS badge, then offers the people who he's just praised to the heavens a whopping 1%

There is no 1% payrise for NHS staff.

The 1% figure is one that the Goverment have submitted to the Independent Pay Review Body that sets NHS pay.

Its upto them to decide on the level of pay. Nothing has been decided yet.

The RCN have called for a 12.5% rise for their members.

pay review bodies in the uk make a recommendation to the government who have no obligation to act on the recommendation, not the other way round as just suggested.

the government have aired their proposal, the pay review body will make their own suggestion, then the government decide the best way to ignore it with the least fall out is what generally happens.

This isn't going to be a popular question but;

With the biggest recession in 300 years looming, numerous businesses going to the wall, huge numbers of people unemployed, a massive blackhole in the countrys finances, tax rises for most a distinct possibility and the people in the middle income brackets facing the biggest squeeze, is now really the time to be awarding pay rises to public sector workers?

Yes, steering away from some of the childish bickering above and asking a serious but unpopular question, as well as whether we should be giving anyone a pay rise right now, can we actually afford to give anyone a pay rise? I'd love to see all those key workers get a nice juicy pay rise. All those people who never get noticed but suddenly we all wanted to clap for. The nurses, the bus drivers, the essential shop workers...

But where does the money come from?

Clapping for carers HAD nothing do with Tory’s.

It was co-opted by Boris & Hancock though & politicised to show they were on the side of NHS staff.

Giving them a 1% paybrise after what they have done is shit.

"This isn't going to be a popular question but;

With the biggest recession in 300 years looming, numerous businesses going to the wall, huge numbers of people unemployed, a massive blackhole in the countrys finances, tax rises for most a distinct possibility and the people in the middle income brackets facing the biggest squeeze, is now really the time to be awarding pay rises to public sector workers?"

Well considering they have just had a 6 year one...

Do you not find it strange that when we want to find the moment for the likes of trident.. or hs2..or foreign wars.. its always there..yet a modest pay rise is out of the question

If we were that skint why not ask the likes of amazon to pay their fair share of tax.?

The information is available. Ibe just shown you proof for nurses and yet you still come back with yet another question.

In real terms a lot of public sector workers are down, just as a lot of private sector workers are too.

That doesn't take away the fact that the pay hasn't been frozen.

If you have the proof then by all means show it, otherwise stop making false claims.

I suggest you read the article

There was a 3 year pay freeze

Then if you are lucky you got 1%

In the last 10 years the average pay has probally gone up by 4 or 5%

Poplar

In 2010, the Coalition Government announced a two-year pay freeze from 2011/12. Following cuts to local government funding, local government workers were subject to a three-year pay freeze.

From 2013/14 to 2017/18 public sector pay awards were capped at an average of 1%.

This policy was lifted in 2017 and from 2018/19 to 2020/21 the parts of the public sector that are covered by the PRBs received pay rises above 2%.

Tory’s screw the NHS with a payrise of 1% after all the sacrifices the NHS has made over the past year.

Surely they deserve better than this? Surely noone can vote Tory again!?

There was a 2/3 year pay freeze, 10 years ago - this is past tense.

Your exact words were 'Well considering they have just had a 6 year one...' - this is present tense. Spoken as if fact today.

Unless you can show me proof that this present tense is indeed true, I think this conversation is over

The average salary of a nurse is estimated to be in the region of £33-£35k.

Real talk - whatever you award the NHS is never going to be seen as enough because it will always be possible to point out some underpaid heroes, even if you doubled everyone's salary.

A 1% rise for everyone in the NHS costs nearly a billion.

And due to Union pressure, there's no such think as front line pay grades, so all staff including managers no matter how useless would get the money.

When Canada faced a budget crisis a few years ago there were no sacred cows and every department got a 20% cut. The country then bounced back much quicker.

Inb4 test and trace, HS2 and the Dome lol.

"In 2010, the Coalition Government announced a two-year pay freeze from 2011/12.

There is an additional 1 year pay freeze between 2020 and 2021.

For some, not all.

There is a general public sector pay feeze for a year.

At least.

NHS workers, and those in the Public Sector earning less than 24k pa, will receive a payrise.

How much?

At least £5pw. What that is in percentage terms, i've no idea.

I thought it was a lump sum of £500

£250 or just over 1% for those under 24k.

High five

In all honestly, I'm still getting over corbyn getting the blame,

That is true genius."

Yeah. That 'empty cookie jar and note' argument is ridiculous, it's been debunked on numerous occasions.

You may struggle to believe this but I don't blame Labour for having no money. They finished in government in the middle of a different kind of pandemic. That's why we have no money.

I wish I’d had a pay freeze For the last five years

I employed 15 staff on minimum wage now going to 8.92 n hr

I took £750,000 last year ended up with £10,000

Staff were earning £26,000

Joys of being an employer

Another £15b found to go with the £22b for the test and trace system that amounts to an excel spreadsheet unable to actually effectively trace people, given out uncontested ofc. Probably nothing dodgy there at all.

1% pay rise to NHS staff, so not even covering the expected rate of inflation later in the year, so essentially a pay cut.

I best get out and clap harder.

Remember at the ballot box, folks.

We all seem to agree that the NHS have been fantastic over the past year. They have worked there asses off, have been exposed to Covid more than anyone else and have just got on with it.

Surely they deserve some real recognition for this? You can’t buy your groceries from extended clapping, you can’t pay your rent or mortgage with it. Now some say that no matter what you give them, people will moan that it is not enough. So is it right toonly give them a 1% rise? No of course it isn’t, it is not in any way fair.

The Govt has wasted far more money than this payrise over the past year. Test & Trace has been a fiasco, lost PPE, out of date PPE, idiotic ideas like the Boris bridge or tunnel to Ireland.

Give the NHS a 10% rise in recognition of what they have done.

And avoid voting Tory ever again!

I don't think the salary scales are an issue.

It's more the fact that pay has barely moved in over a decade which in real terms which would probally mean a pay cut of around 15%.

There is also the rank hypocrisy of praising a service to the sky and whilst imposing pay frexes/cuts.

I will say it in 2016/17 the NHS wage bill was £47.6 billion for 1.1 million workers that’s an average wage of £43.2 k per year & has gone up since, there is not a bottom less pit of cash, & it will mean extra pension contributions too so it’s not just 1% There are those who have not faced the pandemic in the NHS, they are not all saints, there are many scandals & failures within (Dr Shipman, Beverley Allit, Lucy Letby).

There are many other normal workers who have also worked through the pandemic who will not get a pay increase at all this year. Let’s start being honest, I want a pay rise, but I also want my job still to be there next year, I would also like the pension rights of NHS or other civil servants, but again I want my job to be there next year. Don’t forget all the perks the NHS can get, how many sick days (holidays) what’s that deal where you can defer some contributions so you can lease a car cheap, come on who will be honest, go on tell us about your government backed guaranteed pensions. I bet Lionel flashed his NHS badge at every opportunity to get his 20% discount or to get to the front of the line, how many office staff in the NHS do not work at hospitals yet jumped to the top of the list for the vaccine. Yes the NHS has done it’s job, but so have a hell of a lot of others, the NHS has been protected by lockdowns, but again the sacrifice of everyone else still isn’t enough. At the end of the day an extra £432 plus pension is a lot better than £0. X

Yes there are plenty of fire personnel left, our local fire station is 50 yards from us x

A tax increase is austerity by a different name & means, you just want a big pay increase & larger pension pot, & for everyone else to pay for it.
