This is appalling, food safety and animal welfare standards have long been a concern in the EU, when will Brussels get a grip? :

"Five people are feared to have died and hundreds more including many children made ill after eating chicken imported from Poland that was contaminated with salmonella in the past year"

Several cases of Bird Flu in Poland last year (that's Reuters BTW) not to mention horsemeat etc.

Think they had an outbreak of Bird Flu in a Southern Russian poultry farm as well last week.

No matter which country it is, everyone has to be on their guard to make sure that the very best of food hygiene is practiced.

"The European Union's food regulations are to blame for thousands of avoidable cancer deaths, a bombshell new book has claimed.

Who Poisoned Your Bacon Sandwich by journalist Guillaume Coudray says it is to blame for cancer-causing nitrites being added to bacon and ham."

"nearly half the EU's scientists - who until January 1 had power over Britain's food additive rules - have financial links with the European food industry.

And documents unearthed from French archives show European 'harmonisation' forced France to allow nitrites despite warnings from its own health experts in Paris."

"Mr Coudray, himself a Frenchman, has hailed Britain's golden Brexit opportunity to cut ties from the EU's 'unsafe' set of regulations that are 'costing lives'.

Who Poisoned Your Bacon Sandwich slams the EU's claims nitrite-cured processed meats are safe.

It also reveals how European nations had banned the toxic chemicals before the birth of the Common Market forced them to allow poisonous toxins in their meat."

You will find inner peace and contentment . I know living in the EU has been hard on you and you haven’t been able to celebrate any Brexit successes with your usually lobster parties but finding fault in the EU to try and justify your vote isn’t the way to heal and repair the hurt inside

The EU isn't perfect. It's entirely possible to believe that and still think we're better off in than out. If any food standards can be increased for the better then great, do it. In fact the government have now made it possible for our standards to be lowered in the future, presumably depending which of their donors or MPs stands to benefit from doing so.

If the Polish chicken doesn't meet standards then prosecute the producers. If it does meet standards then the standards aren't high enough. Why did the government refuse to keep existing standards as a minimum if their only intention is to improve on them in the future?

That chlorine washing should not be welcome here isn't just a public health issue, it's a massive animal welfare issue too. I don't want to eat chicken that has spent it's whole life swimming it the excrement and disease of the rest of the flock. They are then processed in conditions that haven't been introduced to 19th century hygiene yet. No wonder they have to bleach it. It's also no surprise that those conditions led to massive covid outbreaks among the people who work in the plants.

Add to that the hormones that get injected which accelerate growth beyond the limits of the leg muscles, so they can't support their own body weight, and even the feathers can't grow fast enough to cover the bird.

Why would you want to enable standards to be reduced to those levels?

You do understand that less than 10% of american chicken is processed this way but that is deviating from the point.

People on here have openly opposed buying chicken from them but have no opinion when it comes to eu food standards. The standard reply is you are obsessed with the eu, why do you care about the eu we have left the eu for the simple reason unlike you they think everything in the eu is perfect and should not be criticized.

I've explicitly said the opposite of that. The EU isn't perfect, of course things can be improved. That applies to everything. Introducing a loophole to allow things to be made worse for the right price is not a good idea for anything.

Even if only 10% of US chicken is produced that way (I have no reason to doubt your figures) that's a fuckload of chicken that they want to sell over here, and those conditions for the 10% are perfectly legal over there.

I posted a link from the Byline Times last year which included salmonella stats from the US. A small outbreak in Poland is news over here. It's expected over there. If you don't like a little bit of salmonella now then you won't like the by-products that come with US meat if it makes it over here.

Yes, some salad is washed in chlorine either at the production line or in the restaurant itself. I've done it myself many times. If we don't then you can have a choice between eating pesticides or caterpillars with your radicchio. The reason we don't do it with our chicken is because our farm and abbatoir standards mean that we don't have to.

The quality of the food in UK is one of the lowest if not the worst in the entire world, America may be a contender, I’ve never been there. If you have immigrant colleagues or friends from all over the world just ask them what their opinion is regarding food here. Ask them for an honest opinion and tell them that you are prepared for any answer. You will be surprised.

Perceptions of our food quality are different to perceptions of our food hygiene. A lot of our ingredients can't be produced here because of climate but there's more to our food than beans on toast, spuds and cabbage. If the food you see is poor quality then that's more a reflection on the food you are looking at. There's plenty of quality if you look for it and you don't have to spend a fortune on wagyu beef to get it.

Obviously not picking fast enough

Isn't that a story that says there's more jobs available?

Why do most of their workers come from the EU?

Haven’t got a clue, it looks like they haven’t been able to get anyone else to work for them though

What I can take from the article is that the locals are lazy fuckers. Hardly a Brexit issue. Everyone knew free movement would end.

Why only the locals ? Why couldn’t people travel from other parts of the UK to work there ?

They could but the article mentions locals not sticking around.

Let's face it. Brits in general are pretty lazy when in comes to hard work.

They need some hard working EU workers instead . "

Maybe they do but the point stands that we all knew free movement would end.

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say the quality of the food? Are you suggesting food here, the production and quality is sub standard to other countries? Maybe the way it is cooked? Which is different to quality. Or the types of food we eat? I can see Yorkshire pudding and haggis might not appeal to everyone, but that doesn't mean the quality is bad, just not to their taste.

I know you can find anything if you look around(almost). I don’t buy my meat in Tesco. However that doesn’t reflect what the majority of the population does or what they have been offered. Like it or not majority of the brits are doing their shopping at the supermarket not at the local farm shop. Been to the markets and wasn’t very impressed by the offer. Btw, tell me where I can buy a real chicken in this country, maybe you know? On the continent we just go to the market....

Now I understand. You're comparing mass produced food for the supermarket.

Not sure about where you live, but we have many butchers supplying locally produced meat, farm shops providing locally produced meat and vegetables, some fruits. I prefer and tend to use these over the supermarkets. To quote a well known band, the public gets what the public wants.

People want the convenience of buying everything under one roof, so the supermarket takes advantage of that.

That's not quite the same as saying the quality of all food in the UK is crap.

I am not talking about the way is cooked , I am talking about the raw products. Haggis is barely an unusual food, you can find it all over Europe under one name or another. Continental Europeans tend to eat everything from animals. The meat is the one that doesn’t have much taste and texture, poultry the same. Vegetables, I guess due to the price war between companies you have to accept the lowest quality possible.

I didn’t say that you can not find decent food in UK. And I didn’t say that all the UK food is crap. But supermarket food is usually crap and supermarkets are the place of choice for majority of British. To be more exact, supermarket food in UK is of a lesser quality than supermarket food in other countries. You do have few butchers and farm shops however their products are usually of a much lesser quality compared with what you would expect on the continent. About British fruits and veggies, let’s not talk about them.

Disagree. If you are only prepared to shop in supermarkets or at street markets that might be true, but if like I do you can buy straight from the farmer/producer then you can buy the best quality at a reasonable price.

But I wouldn't disagree with you where the supervision are concerned. If you buy from a bakery the bread is far better than from the supermarket. But that's down to choice. It's changing people's perceptions. Shop local. Buy local!

Unfortunately the high street has changed. Only the largest stores can afford the rent and a lot of those are dropping by the wayside. Out of town supermarkets and retail outlets have gradually killed the high street. Greengrocers, butchers, independent bakery, florists etc have all have been killed of by the large supermarket.

The last year has changed some people's perceptions and I think more are buying local from independent shops. It could be a reset. But I suspect when things, if things return to 'normality' then so will people's habits.

Maybe they do but the point stands that we all knew free movement would end.

Did we? Are you sure ? Do you know what other people think ?

Whether we got a trade deal or not. Free movement was due to end. That was always the message

You can’t possible know why people voted for Brexit?

Who said anything about why people voted?

Are you saying it wasn't common knowledge that free movement of labour would end?

It wasn’t ‘common knowledge’ how free movement would end, there are 100s of different scenarios .

It was most definitely common knowledge. Where have you been for the last 5 years?

Was it? How do you know how people think?

It's not about knowing what people think. It's about what we knew. Are you telling me people didn't know we would need visas to move around the EU?"

Yes, are you saying that when you voted to leave the EU you knew when and how freedom of movement would end

"The quality of the food in UK is one of the lowest if not the worst in the entire world, America may be a contender, I’ve never been there.

On the continent we just go to the market...."

Thats hardly the same as saying the quality of food of food is the lowest in the world is it?

Barnier said way back that they would consider EFTA/EEA combined with a customs union deal.

Pretty much just the same as staying in so wasn't really an option although people touted it.

They need some hard working EU workers instead .

Are you telling me people didn't know we would need visas to move around the EU?

Yes, are you saying that when you voted to leave the EU you knew when and how freedom of movement would end

Then to use you're own argument against you, how do you know what people knew or didn't?

However, I didn't speak about the vote. That was 5 years ago. I'm speaking about what has transpired over the time since the vote.

Although, if you believe the headlines, apparently people voted to stop foreign labour.

Either way you look at it, the end of free movement was always gonna happen.

That is my point, I don’t know and to say it was ‘common knowledge ‘ is blatantly not true . You are naive to think that there was only ever one immigration policy on the table, nobody knew until the deal was signed in late December .

That's weird because there was a million reports saying free movement would end regardless of any trade deal.

And? Your still missing the point, there are hundreds of different ways to restrict movement just like there are 100s of different trade deals

I'm not missing the point at all. Find me 10 people who will tell me free movement wasn't gonna end and I'll retract.

Free movement woudnt end with Norway style deal, UK remaining part of the single market.

Barnier said way back that they would consider EFTA/EEA combined with a customs union deal.

Pretty much just the same as staying in so wasn't really an option although people touted it."

From memory Herr Farage said that was what we should go for.

Why do most of their workers come from the EU?

Haven’t got a clue, it looks like they haven’t been able to get anyone else to work for them though

"The quality of the food in UK is one of the lowest if not the worst in the entire world, America may be a contender, I’ve never been there.

On the continent we just go to the market....Thats hardly the same as saying the quality of food of food is the lowest in the world is it?"

Tell me one country where is lower.

Researchers have estimated there are 180 deaths per year in the United Kingdom caused by food-borne diseases from 11 pathogens.”

Remembering the horrific foot and mouth outbreak which resulted in years of beef export bans what is the U.K. doing?

This is appalling, food safety and animal welfare standards have long been a concern in the EU, when will UK get a grip?

Disgraceful! I bet the EU are pleased we’ve gone!

Each country in the EU was allowed to remove nitrates from processed meats Parma ham is an example. The French and Italians have removed nitrates from some processed meats and the French are considering an outright ban whilst part of the EU so why didn’t we? Big business may have the answer. Specifically these guys have the answer. British Meat Processors Association (BMPA)

Their own report clearly points to a cancer link and yet they are not keen on the public knowing.

80% of nitrates come from vegetables but a lot is natural. It’s when used in the curing process that it becomes a problem. .

Who knew celery treatment was the worse culprit?

But let’s not worry

He’s some happy reading on our future outside of the EU. .

I think you are getting mixed up. The ban on beef was due to BSE not foot and mouth. I was told by a Min of Ag vet that BSE was on the continent, after all a lot of animal feed was imported, but it was passed off as rabies, hence they were able to get round the ban.

Red meat has always been linked to cancer.

It does make me laugh, that a lot of the information on UK animal welfare dates from the 70's and isn't current.

Simple trick. Go to My AccountPersonal details change Postcode and behold you will have a different region location on fabs. It's magic! At least for you

Yes that will give you a different location. No one disputes that.

Why would you have it as London when you're not even in the country?

If you keep calling people thick it won't help your argument."

I lived in London, So I left it? Didnt bother changing?

Will you now admit that your whole story with GPS location on fabs is nonsense?

Yeah I left UK and yeah you can have any location on your profile

thick as a brickOf course you can but that doesnt change your gps position. whos the brick?

You are, because you keep telling me Im sitting in UK, then Im not . Heh you sure know better ( well at least you can keep making up things in your head ) If you paid for membership mate you would know it gives you how many gps miles away you are its not rocket science, but you carry on in your fantasy country it really doesn't bother me at all but just a tip if you want to lie turn your gps off.

What location it shows now? Do you even realise you can show different location?

"Why brexiteers are so thick?

The irony of someone incapable of proper syntax calling others thick

English is not my first language, but either way I try to communicate in a way that even a thick brexiteer would understand atleast you live in a country where you can insult 17.4 million of there citizens eh

I dont, I abandoned the sinking ship so why do you give a shit then lol

That's the thing, I don't get why are you whinging about EU even though you don't live in EU and you have no no vote on anything in it. But you sure do give a shit about it

Apparently, according to some, you're not allowed to speak about the UK. Just as we're not allowed to speak about the EU.

Although, your attitude towards anyone voting leave will have very few caring about your opinion anyway so crack on

Where has anyone not been allowed to talk about the uk?

We're not allowed to speak about the EU because we don't reside in it

What apart from the times its brought up in every single thread under the sun?

And you said the uk.

The poster isn't in the UK so shouldn't be able to talk about it.

I guess you don't really understand sarcasm I think he is he has left the sinking ship.

Actually, I think you're right. His location is London and his distance from me on GPS tells me that's probably right.

If he isn't, I wonder why he feels the need to lie Thats what i noticed if you are going to tell porkies at least turn the gps off or hide your profile.

I reckon It’s another reincarnation "

Certainly looks that way

"Amazing how firmly remainers tend to dismiss legitimate animal welfare and consumer safety concerns.

Seriously what are you on about? EU has best farming standards, food safety in the world.Who do you think has better standards?

Singapore

Yep, thats true but Singapore is a city state, so farming is extremely limited and most food is imported.

USA are above every EU country other than Ireland "

If you think farming in US is better than in EU than fine eat hormones, antibiotics, GMO and chlorine. I stick to local products of France, Spain, Poland.

According to this, the UK ranks 17th overall in food standards (yet one of the top ten riches countries in the world ).

At least 10 EU member states have better quality and safety scores than the UK.

So what are we arguing about? Shouldn't we be more concerned about how to improve this score and how a post Brexit UK might improve this?

I don't know exactly how it's measured but we score over 90, presumably out of 100.

There are 3 EU countries above us. Austria 2and, Ireland 4th & Finland 6th.

I stand corrected (I'm relieved). Turns out I was looking at "Availability" which measures the sufficiency of the national food supply, the risk of supply disruption, national capacity to disseminate food and research efforts to expand agricultural output.

Thanks for highlighting.

Actually, it's not. Most European countries on that list clear a score of 80. Seven on that list cleared 90 along with the UK. Might not be great but definitely not atrocious. I've double-checked this time.

American chicken has been mentioned a few times. Don't buy it then, same as any right thinking person who has some awareness of where their food comes from.

That applies to all food production, foreign and domestic.

We don't need the hypocritical, unenforced and artificially skewed market of the Brussels cabal to deal with that, in fact they make it worse.

It's very easy to say that, but if our market is flooded with cheap, low quality imports, the local producers will struggle to compete and many will go out of business. It will become a lot harder and more expensive to buy quality British produce.

I'm not making a trite political statement, but pointing out my genuine concerns, based on economic facts and international president.

The wealthy will continue to eat healthy, organic free range British chickens and eggs.... whereas those on a tight budget will be forced to eat crap!

It all starts with education as others have said. If we had cooking classes in schools, more of a Jamie Oliver approach if you like, then however poor they are people wouldn't eat badly made crap.

My evidence for this is France, similar disposable incomes but they spend twice as much as us per head on food.

"Wait till we do a trade deal with the US, and then you'll see how truly fucked up chicken can get, filled with, steroids, growth hormones, and dipped in bleach.... and produced at half the cost of ours, with 1/4 of the regulations, and fuck all oversight or welfare standards

..... EU membership has protected us till now.

The South African Poultry industry was wiped out overnight when they did a deal with the USA during the Obama administration.

Agreed! I'm an ex-chef so I won't argue on that. It still won't change the economic argument though market forces dictate that a glut of cheap imports will undercut our producers. Till now whilst hindered by some aspects of our EU partnership, we have also been protected by it against global economic rivals.

It's very difficult to see how the government can protect local producers, maintain current welfare and hygiene standards, and procure the favourable trade deals we now desperately need.....

Ps It is awesome to be able to have firm constructive discourse on such a contentious issue without it degenerating into ranting and name calling!

They must be huge chickens if they are filled with steroids and growth hormones! Bigger than turkeys and swans.

I pop into these posts for the comedic value. So many people clearly have absolutely no idea of what they are actually talking about, as I've said previously. But then, that's what it says on the internet. Rather than from people who work in the industry.

The EU hasn't protected us from anything. British farming practices, including welfare have always been ahead of European ones, anyway. Everything has been traceable for many years, back to the farm it came from.

What many people don't realise is that if a chicken, cow, sheep or pig isn't kept in good health and conditions it won't produce, eggs, milk or meat. I wouldn't disagree that there were problems within the industry many years ago but with the scrutiny the industry faces this changed.

As someone else pointed out, if you don't agree with buying chicken the size of a cow, don't buy it. I wonder what KFC and others will do with the lack of drumsticks? With chickens that size they wouldn't be able to walk and the legs would wither. No shortage in your bucket.

Don't forget many salad leaves etc are washed in bleach and have been done so in this country and the EU for many years. Diluted to kill off germs etc. So you are already eating products that have been washed in it. Nothing new.

Part of the deal the US is pushing for is to not to have country of origin labelling so how will you know?

They know their chicken is shit so don’t want it advertised. Also if it’s used in ready meal production again how do you know ?

Remember in the USA the burden is on the consumer to prove a food is unsafe not on the producer to prove it’s safe.

They have rules but the rules favour Pharma and big food producers. They pay for the senators to run for election.

People should not have their cooks using ready meals that’s ridiculous.
