"What’s your opinion of the article ?"

That the eu rollout has not been that much of a car crash as the daily mail would like us to believe?

He has certainly noticeably been a lot more quiet about being the best in europe.

Its written by a French journalist, who has a history of writing "anti-UK" articles.

Like everyone, he has an opinion.

It’s an opinion piece written by someone in Brussels.

I would give it the same credence as any jingoistic Daily Mail columnists to be honest.

I certainly wouldn’t be blithely believing it or clinging on to it.

But that’s just little old objective me

My uniformed opinion is that we the roll out has been fairly successful here. They certainly took a gamble on the 1 jab thing ,but it looks to have paid off.

My opinion of the eu rollout Is its perhaps not as calatamous that has been suggested.

The press here print partisan pieces. The brexiteers on here have been creaming themselves silly over them.

The papers have been full of how bad the eu has been the last few weeks..should there not be some balance?

I'm going off the figures provided in the article which suggests other countries have vaccinated more people 'fully'than the UK.

If those figures are incorrect, I'll stand corrected.

Its a question about what the figures relate to in context.... you seem to suggest your approval for the figures stating that Europe had fully vaccinated/2 shots more people than the Uk.

So if you think this is an important measure of the success of the EU vaccine roll out, my question is - do you think it is better to fully vaccinate fewer people than single shot a larger number?

I think it's obviously better to vaccinate people fully.

However given time constants and the nature of the pandemic ,the gmnt decided to gamble on giving more people 1 shot.

It looks like this gamble has paid off.

Of course, everyone will be fully vaccinated.

And the Uk governments bold decision to follow a single shot a larger number of people at the moment appears to be working

So is your reply suggesting that you do in fact think the single shot plan is a better option, in which case the Eu claiming they have fully vaccinated more people doesn't vindicate the claim in the article that the Eu roll out plan hasn't been calamitous ?

Clearly not as some countries have fully vaccinated a higher proportion of the population.

How can that be described as a calamity?

France 634K

UK 538K

However, the numbers who have received one dose makes different reading:

UK. 15.06M

Germany. 2.74M

France. 2.25M

Italy. 1.71M

Poland 1.47M

Spain. 1.42M

Which is basically what the article was saying.

I know which country I’d rather be in!

Mongolia?

Well it’s probably very safe there, considering how sparsely populated it is "

North Dakota is sparse they might have hit herd immunity.

If Boris came and gave the vaccine personally in a golden syringe I think some people would moan it’s in the wrong arm.

"Denmark and France are mentioned in the article

France has 3.4% of population having received a vaccination - of which 0.9% of these are fully vaccinated.

96.6% of France is not protected with any vaccine

Uk has 22.7% of population has received a vaccination - of which 0.8% of these are fully vaccinated.

77.3% of Uk is not protected with any vaccine.

"

Do we know how affective one dose of the vaccine is? I realise it’s better to have one than none but is there a big difference between have 2 and 1 ?

By April, we should be doing several hundreds of thousands of second doses daily, as well as several hundred of thousands of first doses per day.

Depends on the vaccine being administered and the person receiving it.

For example the AstraZeneca vaccine offers 64% protection after one dose compared with 70% after the second dose - with only a very small variation in these percentages for age range up to 70 years old and age range over 70 years old.

In theory anything above 40-50% efficacy will make a huge difference.

All it's doing is speeding up the process of achieving immunity within the population.

A lot of this race people seem to be obsessed with, is going to be very pointless if we don’t wake up to the need for vaccines to be made available to the rest of the world.

Scientist are now claiming if we don’t vaccinate the poorer parts of world fairly and just keep the vaccine for ourselves we may be in big trouble.

Covid as we know can mutate quickly and the theory is, if we let it run riot in poorer countries it will have free reign to mutate over and over.

Result our precious me first vaccine attitude won’t work as the mutations will have moved to many times for scientists to keep up.

Back to square one.

15 Million people vaccinated - for once just say:

And actually the new research says that 1st dose will give 67% protection.

Remember flu Vax gives between 40% and 63% each year.

Or perhaps you could look at your way, at the front of the plane is the New Zealand all blacks rugby team and their masks aren’t working whilst yours are they may just walk back and kick the shit out of you for being so selfish and not sharing the masks.

Not at all

The time and vaccines wasted giving under 60 year olds would be better spent spreading the vaccine around the world limiting the virus’ chance to mutate. To purely concentrate on ourselves would be wasted if the virus has had the chance to mutate over and over. It will risk Covid becoming a new disease.

Are you saying it's the over 60's who are spreading the virus? I thought they where the ones in danger of dying if younger family members visited or not?

"A lot of this race people seem to be obsessed with, is going to be very pointless if we don’t wake up to the need for vaccines to be made available to the rest of the world.

"You cant look after others if you dont look after yourself 1st as they say in the plane demo put your mask on before helping others.

As far as I know the Covid outbreak isn’t a falling plane and oxygen masks don’t behave the same way as a virus.

Or perhaps you could look at your way, at the front of the plane is the New Zealand all blacks rugby team and their masks aren’t working whilst yours are they may just walk back and kick the shit out of you for being so selfish and not sharing the masks.

Missed the point entirely i see.

so you dont think that uk citizens under 60 should have the vaccine then.As i said before the uk has put £548 million into covax thats helping the poorer nations.

Is that a real question? 99% of under 50 year old just get a bad cold. Wouldn’t it be better to vaccinate the worlds vulnerable who may die? So if they said my kids or an older lady in Africa. The older lady gets it. Not a difficult decision really. Looking at the pics of my wife she’s fit enough for me not to worry.

It’s not about the individual though is it it’s about how greedy and selfish we are, as the rich always want more than the poor even though we already have more.

I’ve not criticised that in any way but availability is still not fairly shared no matter how many pound notes we give away. We should be giving it for free to those country’s less well off.

Love it when people roll out the "charity begins at home" line. Yet don't give a fuck that the government won't help starving children right here.

Meanwhile also don't care when the government gives £20+ billion to rich knob friends and neighbors of the Tories for crappy PPE.

Luckily the boffins are already working on that one. And so far all the variants are covered by what we currently have.

The interesting part of the the U.K.s global contribution to tackling covid is it doesn’t just extend to vaccines and money.

The U.K., as a world leader in genome identification and tracking is opening up its facilities to poorer nations thereby giving them the ability to identify new variants and act much quicker . This benefits the country but also can help prevent the variants spreading.

Anyway, I would be in favour of helping families here with starving kids. And I would be in favour of rolling out the vaccine as quickly and efficiently here while offering to help any countries that are in dire need. If it helps save lives. Worthwhile.

"You cant look after others if you dont look after yourself 1st as they say in the plane demo put your mask on before helping others.

As far as I know the Covid outbreak isn’t a falling plane and oxygen masks don’t behave the same way as a virus.

Or perhaps you could look at your way, at the front of the plane is the New Zealand all blacks rugby team and their masks aren’t working whilst yours are they may just walk back and kick the shit out of you for being so selfish and not sharing the masks.

so if you and yr wife and kids are offered the vaccine are you going to take it up or offer it to someone else ?

Is that a real question? 99% of under 50 year old just get a bad cold. Wouldn’t it be better to vaccinate the worlds vulnerable who may die? So if they said my kids or an older lady in Africa. The older lady gets it. Not a difficult decision really. Looking at the pics of my wife she’s fit enough for me not to worry.

It’s not about the individual though is it it’s about how greedy and selfish we are, as the rich always want more than the poor even though we already have more. Yes im sure that would go down well with the British public no one under 60 is going to get a vaccine until the uk has made sure all of Africa has.

And what happens if the virus mutates (to an extent that it bypasses the current vaccines) in another country where there has been none or very few vaccines . We are all back to square one again, it is a global pandemic that requires the world to be vaccinated

"

You’re absolutely right we do leas the world in the genome programmes. My point is using that knowledge to knock out the virus globally to those who are vulnerable.

I’m pointing the finger at the western world in general.

We are a bigger version of Israel. Millions of vaccines for their population . A few thousand for the lands they occupy.

How proud will we be to have survived. Fuck everyone else.

They had a thread in the virus forum along the lines of shall we help out the eu.

While I believe in all kinds of Aid (where it concerns the wellbeing of people) There really does come a time when you say:

Love it when people roll out the "charity begins at home" line. Yet don't give a fuck that the government won't help starving children right here.

Left the Guardian page open after I had a look.

Thought I would have an idle peruse. Such storied delights as the “Tyranny of passwords” I mean really.

Still the long read is pretty good to waste some time.

Like trade if your trading partner has nothing you don’t have a customer so you go hungry just the same.

Actually yes it does - sort out the shit at your own front door before you try to sort it at someone elses.

So why do we still have homeless and families living in shit hotels due to the lack of housing. Tell me again where the charity money for that went. PPE for some chums is a good start.

For us to vaccinate the world would cost less that we’ve wasted on PPE Why is it up to the poor little uk to do it i thought your mighty powerhouse of eu could after all they have all the clout in doing deals apparently?"

Not sure what the EU has to do with any of my points as I’ve not mentioned them.

You must stop this obsession.

As I said the money wasted on PPE would vaccinate most of the world.

So when you walk down the street and you see person raising charity for say the local hospice do you stop and interrogate them on how much everyone else has given before you decide whether to give or not?

Well it did as the uk identified it very quickly informed the world and about 40 countries put a travel ban on.It would have spread much further and quicker if they had not been so quick.

‘Charity begins at home’ is taken from a 1642 book and if you read the entire verse it doesn’t mean what you think it does , but that is a debate for another time

Lowest common denominator argument. You know full well this is a standard Tory viewpoint.

Rees Mogg has both those view points.

Of course they won't - righteous politics (the power of sounding good but not real) wouldn't allow them too lol.

They had a thread in the virus forum along the lines of shall we help out the eu.

The overwhelming majority was fuck em.

While I believe in all kinds of Aid (where it concerns the wellbeing of people) There really does come a time when you say:

'Charity begins at home'.

Love it when people roll out the "charity begins at home" line. Yet don't give a fuck that the government won't help starving children right here.

Meanwhile also don't care when the government gives £20+ billion to rich knob friends and neighbors of the Tories for crappy PPE.

Hence the term: "Charity begins at home".

Also - you really don't know just what I ive a fuck about.

Not aimed at you. Just I. General. People who say things like "charity begins at home" are often the same people who don't want the government to feed starving kids.

I guess for the Tories charity begins with their rich neighbors. So it's close to home.

The term 'Charity begins at home' actually means 'FEED OUR CITIZENS FIRST'.

So. They actually do give a fuck.

I agree with your first part. But in reality, the same people who say want to cut foreign aid to spend the money here also hound the shit out of anyone that suggests Rashford had a point about feeding starving kids.

It's your opinion that people are saying that - you provide no proof - you just reeled out the sentence with no back-up. Easy to say and nothing to back it up.

Show me just ONE name of a real livinf person that says 'charity begins at home' and then says 'fuck those who need our foodbanks'?

Lowest common denominator argument. You know full well this is a standard Tory viewpoint.

Rees Mogg has both those view points. "

In your opinion - No Facts however?

Would you ? Would you give money to charity that could be spent on your kids? Would you give your time to help others that could be given to your family and friends? Would you have the vaccine if it prevented an elderly or vulnerable person from having it? I know I would , and my friend and family would do the same

‘Charity begins at home’ is taken from a 1642 book and if you read the entire verse it doesn’t mean what you think it does , but that is a debate for another time "

Loads of people come on here and all over the places saying shit like "the parents shouldn't buy cigarettes" etc. Those people don't give a fuck.

Anyway, I would be in favour of helping families here with starving kids. And I would be in favour of rolling out the vaccine as quickly and efficiently here while offering to help any countries that are in dire need. If it helps save lives. Worthwhile. but would you turn it down for you and your family and offer it to someone else tho ?

Do you think under 50s here need it more than over 60s in the Sudan? "

YES in the Sudan 44m pop and only 27k infected, so less people to spread the virus

Let's put it another way and stop letting the minutia of everything cloud a simple issue . . .

There is nobody in my family or of friends that are currently in need of charity. So the charity giving and time I give is outside my home and that is given to UK charities BEFORE it is given to foreign charities.

'Charity begins at home'.

Germany 1.41M

Italy 1.28M

Spain. 1.00M

Poland 641K

France 634K

UK 538K

However, the numbers who have received one dose makes different reading:

UK. 15.06M

Germany. 2.74M

France. 2.25M

Italy. 1.71M

Poland 1.47M

Spain. 1.42M

Which is basically what the article was saying."

The WHO have said that delaying the second jab is not only more effective in that you can protect more people quicker but it makes the vaccines work even better. So the UK getting right again and again. All made possible by our fantastic Health professionals

You know me foxy

My dads 90 glad he’s had vaccine

My kids are twenty’s .

Both they and I would give it to someone more vulnerable .

I suspect if anyone had the choice and were healthy and in the lower risk groups most people would.
