He will get away with it the same as he did the last 4 years.

Waving his hands around taking the piss out of a disabled reporter. He's a classy guy and that's why his supporters love him.

Unfortunately I agree that he'll get away with it, and there's probably a clause about not being able to bring criminal charges against a president that was in office at the time. Fucked but in a bad way

Convict him, ok, but also convict about 25 other elected officials who have done as bad or worse. Kacklin Kamala bailing out criminals, some individuals more than once who committed heinous crimes while out on her bail money over the summer.

Where does it stop?

He wasn’t re-elected, he will not and shouldn’t be supported for public office again. People that want to see him do time I can’t quite understand, I mean, what itch do you have does that scratch? I mean it’s a stretch to consider that he has responsibility for those deaths on January 6th, just like you can’t imprison all of Man city the next time they win something and the fans or followers torch cars in the streets can you?

Just like people say show the “proof” of widespread voter fraud, where is the “proof” that he incited the violence?

He should be put on trial and they can consider the evidence and judge him innocent or guilty.

Same with the myriad of charges he's facing for fraud, tax dodging, paying off porn stars etc etc.

I think every American registered citizen, and tax payer is under investigation at some point in their lives. Trump and Hunter are likely in pretty rich company, but due to non disclosure we only hear about the others if it kinda ruins them. Paying off hookers? Well, as the oldest profession I think it’s understood that they are in it for the pay. If you’re dumb enough to be a gazillionaire and think she’ll be happy with the 300 bucks after leaving your 300 foot yacht, then your probably deserving of the ensuing hustle.

The Impeachment Managers are all delivering compelling testimony.

If Trump’s defence team don’t up their game the Republican Senators will probably never live down the shame of failing to convict in the face of overwhelming evidence.

That may have grave consequences for the rule of Law in America going forwards.

a sizeable chunck of the GOP vote could feel politically homeless if they don't vote to convict. this could hobble the party for as long as the trumpaholics have free rein and keep the dems in power for a long time, which is clearly a good thing

the evidence for trump inciting the right wing terrorist insurrectionists to violently storm the capitol is dozens of arrested right wing terrorist insurrectionists who violently stormed the capitol giving statements to investigators stating that trump incited them to do it. it's quite simple to understand for anyone with even a modicum of intelligence.

This Senate trial is being played out for public opinion. It is already demonstrating what ALL normal thinking people know - Donald Trump was the inciter of the mob violence on January 06th. When Republican Senators ignore facts and ignore overwhelming evidence because they think they will be saving their seat... they are forgetting that the overwhelming majority of Americans do believe in law and order.

As an aside, how can hundreds of currently jailed people ALL say that they were following their CiC orders? Is it right that they go to jail but the CiC retains his billionaire lifestyle? How will these people and thousands of others take to the very public disownment by Trump?

History will not be kind to Trump and will no doubt be equally harsh to the republicans who support him at this time. The party of law and order is now a basket case coalition of racists militia groups and conspiracy theorists. The more moderate senators need to impeach to reclaim the party from the Trump base. It is that or dwindle into a protest party

Jesus christ, this thread is full of the reason why trump got elected in the first place, racist, bigot, violent, dumb. It's like noone anti trump realises how diverse his voters actually are, like everyone refuses to acknowledge that he was and is supported by millions that felt and feel like they had been left behind by both parties, noone to represent them. Its fucking ridiculous that they were automatically accused of all of those things as a whole, I mean who in their right mind was going to be feeling discarded and disenfranchised by the system and then vote for hillary??? She is the system that forgot about them, and so is Biden. They are now back to having noone they feel is even partially representing them, that's not healthy. The last thing anyone should want is millions of people scrabbling for anyone that will speak for them, because they will make their own and it won't matter if they are worse than trump because at least they'll have somebody that they feel represents them at least in part.

You raise an interesting point.

Why do you think someone like Trump who openly despised ordinary people, tried to take away their healthcare, gave tax breaks to the rich and shifted more of the burden onto poor people, was so appealing to so many poor people?

remarkable that the only thing achieved in those 4 years was 5 miles of rickety fence and the creation of a new third world country that is luckily being dragged back into the 21st century by the new president

"Jesus christ, this thread is full of the reason why trump got elected in the first place, racist, bigot, violent, dumb.

"

I don't know. Its hard to judge being from the UK what happened in their everyday lives that either swayed them to or from him in the end, obviously a large number felt he failed them because ultimately he lost. But the answer to trump for those that didn't lose faith in him isn't a return to the status quo, which is what seems to have happened now Biden is in the oval. In this last election again just like in the first one there is going to be a huge number of people who voted trump (or even didn't vote for him or Biden) simply because they couldn't see how Biden represented them. Just like they couldn't see how Hillary represented them.

it appears that immediately after telling the right wing terrorist insurrectionists that he would walk at the front of the march to attack the capitol, trump climbed off the hustings into a waiting limousine and drove back to the whitehouse, where he proceeded to watch the insurrection he ordered unfold on television news from the comfort of his living room.

I agree that Biden doesn't represent the people. And is the status quo.

Trump activity worked to make poor people less well off. Destroy the environment. Remove their healthcare etc. Just seems like the media have such a huge role to play. Just like here with brexit.

It's pretty clear that impeachment in recent years is always going to be seen as a political process, the loser and their supporters will always say it was a vote on party lines.

Whole thing seems pointless when there's clearly allegations of lots of other federal crimes that can be investigated against him that could lead to actual jail time.

Under Obama administration 0 raises because of the cost of healthcare to employer and to the employee. Under Trump administration I have received 4 raises passed down because of tax cuts. Now gas up heating oil up cost of living rising. In the middle of a pandemic that shut everything down.

It is not going to hold up. If we convicted politicians for firey speech some of the trial managers are just as guilty. It is bad what happened but the first amendment that protects everyone must be upheld. A conviction will set precedent that no one can have a voice. That is Pandora box we do not need to open.

Trump is obviously guilty as anyone with any intelligence can see !

But, I don't believe the republicans in the Senate will convict trump because they don't care about seeing trump face any kind of justice for the awful things he's done as a pretend president, because their lips have been attached to trumps ass for four years.

Those republican Senators, who are actually a real joke as Senators anyway, have no balls what so ever, they are weak minded, weak willed fools, as they have constantly shown for four

years.

They have ruined the dignity of the republican party, by being foolish enough to follow the mindless ramblings of a mental case pretending

to be a president.

Even though those gutless fools will let trump off, trumps political career is over, he will never be able to be a pretend president ever again.

So let the civilian courts deal with the biggest loser of any US presidency. Hopefully they will make him face some measure of acceptable justice for his crimes.

This year alone will cost trump at least 40 to 50 million in lost revenue, that'll hurt him where it

counts lol, and it's just the beginning ; ) .

Trump should get a Hangmans Noose put around his neck for the factual crimes he's committed against the people of the United States. He is an actual traitor by trying to overthrow a legitament fair election to remain in power. That's the only legacy that will count in the historical records that are being compiled by the congressional historians.

It will she interesting to see what comes out about Russia in years to come. There are reports that the KGB have been grooming him for years.

Also if more comes about about him asking other countries to interfere with US elections. Like he did with Ukraine.

These millions who don’t feel represented - why don’t they feel represented?

Trump did not do anything for anyone other than normalise hatred, bigotry and division. The poor didn’t get richer did they? No, they didn’t but for sure bigots, racists and supremacists felt that they could at last crawl out from under their rocks.

Perhaps people like that ought to accept that their ideals should actually stay under the rock.

I really am interested to know about the types of people who could only feel represented by Donald Trump. What disenfranchises them from normal, regular Politics (Republican or Democrat)?

Just being pragmatic.

If the Republicans don’t vote to impeach Trump and end his political ambition along with that of his family, they risk him dividing the Republican vote. This would see them be out of power for a long time.

Trump still has a huge following and the moderate Republicans need to shut him down as an option.

Ok first totally irrelevant, violence wasn't caused by democrats in Jan 2017. If you believe that, you're lying to yourself.

And anyway sending an armed mob to kill politicans was my point, did you miss that part?

That armed mob was there because of one man, the same man that incited them and directed them to the capitol and the same man that eventually called them off. The fact they were unsuccessful is again irrelevant. Do you get to go home if you only attempt a crime? You only stand trial if successful in carrying out a crime?

And yet that crime will be voted on in a democratic way. Kind of like 12 jurors. Judged by your peers. If I was found not guilty I get to go home.

44 republicans have already voted this impeachment process is unconstitutional, the outcome was never under question.

The purpose of this impeachment is to get the republicans to own the insurrection. They're going to get the benghazi special for the next two years.

I do remember the day after the inauguration they had the “woman’s march” on Washington (after all the allegations of sexual assault and defamatory comments he had made about women) it drew about 4 times his crowd did... and i remember him being really pissed about it.....

Riots are riots with the goal of getting your point across thru violent acts. We can debate this all day it is not going to change that fact. Why should 1 side just be held responsible when both are just as guilty. Your not going to have unity unless these facts are addressed.

"Jesus christ, this thread is full of the reason why trump got elected in the first place, racist, bigot, violent, dumb. "

Some good points, but I think will get lost in the thread x

I’ve never understood this impeachment thing in the US Bill Clinton got acquitted when guilt was shown, so is it an effective way to get justice? Has any US president been impeached? Yes Nixon resigned when president, but this time Trump is already out of his presidential term, even if found guilty what would the punishment be?

I'm gussing that if they had been BLM protesters that there still would have been no armed responce to an attack on you're capital building then ?

Any other time the army would have been deployed right away by thier commander in chief! after all they were only down the road fully locked and loaded

the rights attemptes at false equivalence has divided the nation. they clearly seek to instill permanent disunity in the republic. the fact still remains that the 6th january was not a riot. it was an armed insurrection intent on murdering the legislature of both houses with the aim of installing an unelected right wing dictator. those of the vocal minority who are still defending the violent armed coup d'etat are deliberately sowing dis-harmony in order to force the silent majority into a stalinist state. it's as simple as that.

Well it all exploded after questions last night.....

The trump team calling tubberville a liar over the pence call.... mike lees office confirm

The trump McCarthy phone call when trump explodes and refuses to call in the national guard...

Sources close to pence calling trumps team liars over trump not knowing pence was in danger.....

I think where there would have been no witness’s before... i think you have to call them now... McCarthy and tubberville at least..

I think the chances of trump being convicted went from “no chance” to “hmmm.... maybe!”

Also...... the trump defenders seem to have gone awfully quiet over the last 8 hrs..... nervous possibly?

If it is the case that 'they' have been left behind by the parties then 'they' need to catch up. Hankering after how it 'used' to be is stupid. That's life. Keep up. Adapt. Move on. Society constantly progresses. Digging in like some throw back reactionary just makes you look idiotic.

I don't think the needle had moved that much. Trump knowing and increasing the danger to Pence might concern the GOP but they're too scared to convict. Even if Trump gave evidence saying he summoned and incited the insurrection, the Republicans would not convict. They will attack each other first but the inciter in chief, which is odd. Is it just the fear of being primaried that is keeping them in line.

Or convict which I can see as a good point and take down anyone that gave a firey speech that resulted in violence. That is alot of cleaning up. I leaning for this scenario. Yes it makes them look bad at first but the precedent was set for conviction because of speech. They can according to precedent set by this do so. Which endgame to pick.

although the case to convict is absolutely conclusive the republicans will clearly take the usual short-termist right wing action and vote against conviction. this outcome will clearly have the benefit of spltting the republican vote for at least a generation allowing the democrats ample time to mend the country from the damage caused by the reagan, bush sr, bush jnr, trump administrative disasters.

All for conviction people calling their senators for it. Trump can go but the "drain swamp" policy he ran is still alive. I hearing it on local radio I guess we wait and see. Everybody was called out from the presentations on both sides of the isle.

Where they could have argued about the “free speech” element before the riot last night... his disregard and inaction during and after may give republican senators the off ramp to convict him....

It could be looked at as deliberate dereliction of duty.... I don’t think you can now argue that!

The argument that Trump is protected by the first amendment has been described as 'legally frivolous'. It's totally irrelevant and serves only a fig leaf for the senators to hide behind. Senators are not determining whether Trump’s conduct was criminal, but whether it sufficiently violated his oath of office to warrant conviction and potential disqualification from holding future office. This defence would not stand in a criminal trial

"“No reasonable scholar or jurist could conclude that President Trump had a First Amendment right to incite a violent attack on the seat of the legislative branch, or then to sit back and watch on television as Congress was terrorized and the Capitol sacked,”"

Yes both sides Pelosi on the stand explaining why she refused the national guard would be fantastic. Let's have total transparency for once. From both regarding the issue.

You really think they will risk Trump giving evidence?

With someone so sharp they can say these five words in order. He will smash it.

I want total transparency if that what it takes. Clearly there is more at issue. Was it Nancy's and the Mayor ploy to make DC a 51st state because they can't call the NG.They refused the extra security. What was the goal by not having the security when you were warned ahead of time.

Each witness will have to approved by a majority vote.

Mccarthy... pence.... the secret service... tubberville .... mike lee....

Remember the house only wanted the notes taken by the congresswoman... then the trump side claimed McCarthy denies what he said in the phone call, which other congresspeople will be able to blow up!

Now ABC are replaying the Call Mccarthy made to them in which he states he had just called to the president!

Trumps team are floundering...

If a conviction is what it takes to expose everything the so be it. It's interesting how a whole bunch of issues are thrown into the mix.

Republicans are never going to convict Trump. This is just to drive home the point they are protecting Trump in the full knowledge that Trump sent the mob to impede the electoral process. It's just going to make it harder for them hide behind procedural excuses.

Tuberville, Herrera Buetler and former WH staff will be top of the list.

I don't know about that Nancy is probably the most despised politician in the capital for the Republican party. Just like Mitch is for the Dems.

Nancy is irrelevant and a distraction. There is one article of impeachment before the Senate and that is that DJT incited a mob to overturn the election results. Mitt Romney won't vote to turn this into a distraction circus.

The interesting thing is that Herrera buetler account of what happened has been back up by other GOP republicans on the record.. i know of mike Gallagher of Wisconsin and Anthony Gonzales of ohio.....

Also can you think of one person that the trump team could call that would help... i can’t think of one.... but i wonder if you try to hit the home run and get a mike pence or a close member of his staff!..... if you make it trump vs pence you split the party...

The people have a right to know Nancy's intentions. It applies to the impeachment. If the guard was there this could have been completely avoided now wouldn't have ? It needs to be addressed.
