" Up to 142,000 tonnes of food could be wasted over the next six months because of Brexit border disruption, ministers have admitted.

An estimate drawn up by the government as an "illustration of what we could reasonably expect" suggests food, drink and feed equivalent to 96 million whole chickens may end up being thrown away."

I wonder who'll pick up the tab for this Brexit bonanza

OP

We currently waste 22.6 times that amount in the same period of time on purely domestic home food waste, (3.3 million tonnes).

So more the question is do we really need it?

The guardian article has nothing to do with Brexit chaos, it is due to the new system the EU will introduce on 1st July. Which in fact is open now for the UK to use as from 1st Jan, prior to it applying to the rest of the planet.
