"Another Brexit Bonanza "People living in the UK will be able to use their existing EHICs until they expire, at which point they will apply for the new GHIC. The GHIC offers almost the same cover as the previous EHIC, but with one difference: unlike the EHIC it can’t be used in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland." ...and to think with a name like 'Global' it would be valid in more places than the paltry EU card it replaces ... Source - in case of doubt .. https://www.britishineurope.org/articles/68684-ehics-ghics-and-other-stories" can well live without visiting any of them like lol

That seems to be what will continue at 1 January.

"“GHIC and EHIC do not replace travel insurance.”" And that is the most important fact of all. And they never did. It never covered repatriation too.

"So what I'm saying is: If you had previously had been given permission for the EHIC to cover (before Jan 1st) you would then simply apply for a new one and the cover will continue. Otherwise no it won't - just like the old system. " Read the article - it won't

"the new GHIC does also now cover you for medical care in Australia, New Zealand, Crown Dependencies and overseas territories and some Balkan states, with other worldwide countries being added when agreements are reached . It's like the brilliant Alan Menkin song from one of my favourite Disney films Aladdin -”A Whole New World” ![]() Yup GLOBAL is a much bigger word than 'needing to fill in special permissions for 4 countries' - which were actually there before Brexit too - I think, but I'm not sure, that it actually means Global. ![]()

"https://www.gov.uk/global-health-insurance-card Never let the truth / facts get in the way of a successful Brexit outcome. Mind you, with Johnson lying every time he opens his mouth, it must be hard for some people." From your link : "You cannot use an..... existing EHIC in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland" Existing.... EHIC.... You never could use it in those four countries......

"Doesn't EHIC doesn't count in a billion other countries either. Buy Insurance. Get properly covered wherever you go." Exactly. I'd never travel with only a EHIC card as my only form of travel insurance.

Also as been pointed out the old card had the same rules in regards to the countries mentioned

They only cover you 'with permissions in place' and only then 'from within the specific categories' listed. If you had those permissions granted to you previously then you simply apply for a new EHIC, and they will cover you in the future. The OP needs to read the document properly - get away from the newspaper article and read the government document on how to apply and what it covers and what circumstances past and present those countries had in place.
