Not exactly . . . in quite a few case you simply apply for a NEW EHIC Card.

"Who can apply for a new UK EHIC

Some people may be able to apply for a new UK-issued EHIC if they are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. This gives you the same cover as a GHIC in EU countries.

Under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, a new UK-issued EHIC also covers you for necessary healthcare from state services in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

GHICs and old UK EHICs do not work in these 4 countries.

You can apply for a new UK EHIC if you're:

an EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic or Liechtenstein citizen, and you've been living in the UK since before 1 January 2021

a UK State Pensioner or receiving some other exportable benefits, and you have a registered S1 form or E121

a frontier worker (someone who works in one state and lives in another) and you've been one since before 1 January 2021, for as long as you continue to be a frontier worker in the host state, and you’re eligible for an S1 form or E106

a worker posted to work in another EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland by your UK employer, and you've been there since before 1 January 2021, where the country has agreed to let the posting continue an eligible family member or dependant of one of the above

a UK student studying in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland, and you've been there since before 1 January 2021"

Well those countries above never did have Universal Automatic cover under the EHIC system . . .you had to apply to have it cover for you.

That seems to be what will continue at 1 January.

So what I'm saying is:

If you had previously had been given permission for the EHIC to cover (before Jan 1st) you would then simply apply for a new one and the cover will continue.

Otherwise no it won't - just like the old system.

Read the government website - and read the proper detail of what it covered before - and in all of those circumstances it will.

Yup GLOBAL is a much bigger word than 'needing to fill in special permissions for 4 countries' - which were actually there before Brexit too - I think, but I'm not sure, that it actually means Global.

I'd never travel with only a EHIC card as my only form of travel insurance.

Yup. They only cover you 'with permissions in place' and only then 'from within the specific categories' listed.

If you had those permissions granted to you previously then you simply apply for a new EHIC, and they will cover you in the future.

The OP needs to read the document properly - get away from the newspaper article and read the government document on how to apply and what it covers and what circumstances past and present those countries had in place.
