. . . . :)

Wasn't that 150k records - and in the process of being recovered?

Not really into this culture of some idiot in IT deletes info' and someone else gets the sack.

Not a fan of Patel at all but I would be less of fan of the IT idiot - let them be the one that gets it.

Princes Risborough, Luasanne, Alderney

for clarity....

A letter sent to senior officers on the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) on Friday from deputy chief constable Naveed Malik, lead for the organisation on the PNC, outlines the scale of records affected: “In PNC approximately 213,000 offence records, 175,000 arrest records and 15,000 person records have potentially been deleted in error. In terms of understanding the potential linkage between records, a one-person record can have multiple arrest records and one arrest record can have multiple offences linked to it.”

The DNA database is connected to the PNC and has also been hit, the police chief’s letter reveals. It says: “Approximately 26,000 DNA records corresponding to 21,710 subjects have potentially been deleted in error, including records that have previously been marked for indefinite retention following conviction of serious offences.”

Technicians are also scrambling to recover tens of thousands of fingerprint records, according to the deputy chief constable’s letter, which says that “30,000 fingerprint records and 600 subject records have potentially been deleted in error”.

Do we know what the problem is that lead to the records being deleted - data update, migration, software, someone accidentally pressing the “yes I do want I delete these records”?

It’s very fishy. I think there’s more to this story, maybe even a libertarian policy that’s been exposed.

The policing minister, Kit Malthouse, said “Unfortunately down to human error, some defective code was introduced as part of that routine maintenance earlier this week and that’s resulted in a deletion of some records and that’s currently under investigation.

We are now working very quickly with policing partners and within the Home Office to try and recover the data and assess the full extent of the problem.”

it seems the home secretaty priti patel has refused to give any kind of statement and chooses to hide behind her junior minister.

Or maybe she is busy trying to find out who is responsible and who can fix it.

Given the point in time we are at, my suspicion would go to a cock up as part of the severing connections between UK and EU database systems. The last minute nature of the agreement (christmas eve, to take effect new years day) will have left a bunch of IT nerds (meant in a kind way, not a derogatory way) rushing to implement something poorly specified and not at all understood by the ones barking out orders. There will have been software engineers and IT technicians trying to do too much in too little time, multiple teams working at cross purposes with each other, all told that this was LEGAL REQUIREMENTS and that they would be held personally responsible if it wasn't completed. [Anybody that has ever worked in IT knows the sort of shit that is dumped on the workers by the managers].

To be honest, I'm surprised that it wasn't a bigger mess. Normally a by product of any database update is a raft of extra backups of the information, but leaving the EU gave the problem of there being huge amounts of information that the UK police was no longer allowed to have any access to or copies of. It must have been a mad time of writing computer scripts to trawl through the records and irretrievably delete stuff, with backups not allowed because the requirement was to explicitly get rid of information that was now illegal to be held in the UK...

Of course the poor buggers working the computer keyboards will be crucified, the ones at the top responsible for the mess will be given a pay rise...

PNC is, was and always will be crap anyway. It’s a computer system from the 70’s and hasn’t aged well. Clunky code and notoriously difficult to work with. Not surprised something like this happened tbh.

You can't hack a paper document from Russia.

"Will never understand why all important records are not printed on paper and stored surely all records should be duplicated. The reliance on computers I crazy when will society grasp this?"

Unfortunately emma, the sheer amount of the records now makes it impossible to use paper storage. Much of the value of the information is not just in the bare details of a data entry, but in the cross connections between the records. The paper records would be unusable in any timely manner for crime investigation (reading through tens of thousands of pages to find connections, something that takes just seconds on computer systems?), nor even as a backup for lost data (hunting through millions of pages just to find which bits had gone missing from the computers, then spending multiple man years re-entering the information). It is almost impossible to comprehend the sheer volume of information that is now stored within national computer systems. A single disk drive within a home computer system can now hold at least the equivalent of 50 million pages of printed text. This means that (quick calculation) to print the information stored on a £25 disk drive would now cost in the region of £250,000 just for the paper alone...

So by this annalogy your saying the IT guys told pritti they don't have the correct materials ( skill set ) like your purple paint only point, and she supplied more people with the correct skill set ( more IT Personel) that could do the job , ie she supplied the correct paint to do the job correctly , she inspected the door herself prior to painting to.

Is this what happened.

OR

Did pretti hire a tradesman ( painter ) IT staff to do a job they are trained for and expect them to do the job just like you would hire a painter to paint a green door as instructed. And expect any issues painting the door would be looked at and resolved.

While stripping the green door ready for repainting the door is found to have woodworm below the surface but the painter paints over it anyway. When the door is finished and looks awful its hardly prittis fault the door looks awful.

By this analogy, if patel is abusive and threatening towards the tradesmen (allegedly her default mode of behaviour), doesn't give them clear instruction, doesn't give them the time they need, will not let them explain to her the complexities of door painting (stripping away old flaking paint, priming of surface, patch test of this new unproven type of paint, spare door in case there is some corrosive action between the incompatible primer-undercoat-gloss layers that rots holes in the PVC door), but keeps ordering "there's 100 million doors to be done, you're starting on them christmas day and they'd better be finished by new years eve or I'll have your balls" - who is at fault?

Every single person that has worked in IT at the coalface of actually using the keyboard will recognise this. Yes, not all bosses are bad, some are excellent. But when the very top of the organisation is run by inadequacy and fear, the tradesmen doing the job are often fucked before they have even started.

"And the Case of 213,000 delted records

As Priti Patel is the Home Secretary

Is she under pressure to resign or

Will she Coerce a Civil Servant to go ?

Did she go in & do the job herself, has she got a degree in I.T. If a painter came to your house to paint your door & you told them you wanted it painting green, & they painted it purple would it be your fault or the painter who did the job.?

It would be mine

I should have bought green paint & done it myself

Its only a f*cking door , id think to myself .

Its not like a painter is really that clever

Big sign on the door saying Green please

Ive got Purple though

2nd note on the door

I dont care if youve got f*cking Purple

I said Green & the tin is below your eyes!!.

See just shows

No matter how many times you tell someone to do

Something they might f*ck it up.

Therefore its ALWAYS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to

Make sure your painters are competent & Have the

Correct Colour Paint !!

What if there's something wrong with the paint? "

A 3rd note says.

If there is Something wrong with the Green Paint

Dont Paint the Door .

If you decide to use some other paint

I will DELETE YOU !!

What are you talking about ?

Its a brand New Door

When i took over the ownership of the House

I bought NEW DOORS for My Own Security !

They needed Painting

Yeah but in this case it actually is a scabby old door (police national computer system) that has been given so many coats of paint over the years, has had so much post shoved through its letter box, doesn't even fit in the door frame properly any more. And the instruction was to remove every single trace of green paint from the door, without making the slightest chip in the purple, yellow, white, red, sky blue pink layers. And the tradesman mutters under his breath "how the fuck do i do that then", but the owner of the door shouts at him "just fucking do it because the no green paint law comes in at midnight and if the jobs not finished it's YOUR fault".

Preston

I’m sure she didn’t write the contract, & I’m sure she wouldn’t be aware of every detail in every contract that her department signs, that’s the job of the civil service, you know the ones that are in Whitehall all their working lives no matter who is in power, or the lawyers they employ to check things? Does anyone else remember yes minister or yes prime minister from the 80’s? Apparently according to both sides of the house for a comedy it was very realistic x

Princes Risborough, Luasanne, Alderney

It appears that this distasteful home secretary's list of errors has rapidly become a catalogue as the weeks go by.

Im a General Builder

No Job to Small .

So the Analogy of purple Paint has

been totally wasted on me

I much prefered my Football manager/player Sceanario

As im far less likely to bump into a Manager or a pro player

On here , who could shut me down
