Unbelievably evil.

Is this about the homes run by the church, and the associated reports of letting children die? Saw a report on the news something akin to this a few days ago.

I totally agree...the Catholic church in particular has enabled abusers the world over.Time they were banned from being in a position where social services hand over vunerable children to a paedophile infested organisation. The Govt needs to stand tall and ban this type of "Home "

If you've got Netflix try the documentary called The Keepers about what went on in Baltimore. Absolutely unbelievable!

"Yes. Dont delve further unless you are emotionally up to it"

It's a horror story, but that's only the surface detail of a bigger picture. It is tied into the history of Ireland and the church.

Then she found out that her son had been trying to contact her all along but the nuns told her they didnt know where he was

They weren't just unnecessarily cruel, they seemed to make an art of it. And imagine how much will never be uncovered

The child mortality rates are truly off the scale, 1 in 7..

It's akin to some sort of genocide..

I was taught by nuns in the 60s at primary and the vast majority of them were fekin horrible cruel people..

Whilst the taesoch was right to acknowledge it he was very lax on apportionment of the blame upon the central institution, the church..

They could with devastating accuracy hit you on the head from ten yards with the board duster and woe betide if they got the cane or the slipper out..

Agree, all schools should be just that schools who educate not brainwash in accordance with whatever cult they're hiding behind..

A town near you

It's hard to comprehend how somewhere that should have been all about compassion and loving care become a house of horrors staffed by what can only be described as devil worshipers.

Several films in recent years have shed light on mother and baby home and the like.

Song for a raggy boy

The magdalene

Are two I've watched which are horrendous

As much as the church is front and centre in this, the Irish State was also complicit.

The reason no real personal blame will be attributed is because the politicians that allowed this to happen are still in power in the form of sons, grandsons nephews etc such is the way of Irish political dynasties.

There's so much truth in that. They were complicit and slow walked the truth. Over and over.

Recognising that yes, however its still an indication perhaps of the power the church holds over Irish institutions and society that there was no one from the church alongside him when he apologized..

I think the power of the church has diminished to almost nothing now. But it was a complex long running institutional failure to address what happened. The individual religious orders involved all issued seperate apologies

There's a lady called Catherine Corless, a mother, grandmother and amateur historian who deserves all the credit for putting such detail to this scandal. There's some interviews with her on YT, but if can you read the article the NY Times did on her a few years, I really recommend it.

just about everyone in Ireland knew about these places, especially the fathers and mothers who sent their daughters to be incarcerated in these places, it was a common warning by parents to there bold children that "if you don't behave i will send you to the nuns"

The church is taking all the blame but everyone in Ireland was complicit in these crimes, when young people today comment to me about these times i tell them to go and ask there parents or grandparents about their dirty secrets
