So all those righties who vowed to leave Twitter for parler after the trump suspension have been hit with bad news..

Firstly both google and apple removed the app from their App Store

Now Amazon, who host the site, have given them notice of termination... which means if they don’t find a new host by 10pm Sunday the whole site goes offline!

In good news... that was where Katie Hopkins fled after her Twitter ban.. so we can call this a bonus

If they are to stay online, they will have to move hosting to China or Russia. Oh the irony.

Gab will be next on the list to be removed.

Removing alternatives will ultimately mean the publishers left disseminating the message will have a massive job editing and accounting for what they believe to be acceptable or not.

They should probably look at the Chans if they want to do something about online extremism. That’s where Qanon emerged.

There will always be a place somewhere on the internet for this stuff. Usually hosted by a gleeful Russia.

sadly not. there are in excess of 6,600 forums, social media outlets and websites that promote right wing hate that urgently need to be taken down. there are many more that are mrginally less of a threat. a great many of them are run by employees of various governments around the world.

Removing them from mainstream platforms will hinder their growth and spread of disinformation. That way, they're just talking among themselves.

I said above - there are bigger bullies of hate speech platforms than Trumpy. He will waste a year or so trying to be the BIG dog at the expense of his business - and already those aligned to him now are shifting their notions of whether it's time to ditch to a safer bet.

You're all being a bit naive here, Twitter thrives on hate speech from the left and right, most things controversial create a reaction/response, that's how they make their money. For example they didn't ban Trump before because of the numbers of followers he had, ie advertising targets. You are all being used to create wealth for the tech giants. I say you because I've never used Twitter or Facebook, never will and would happily see them banned

i disagree. there are plenty of domains and servers willing to host these sites in countries with lax laws governing data storage. Cloudfare finally removed 8chan from it's domains in august 2019 following the el paso massacre by a right wing assailant. they then moved to Epik who are considered the 'swiss bank of domains', where they have clearly flourished. the process will repeat it's cycle over and over on account of the vast sums of money involved.

It takes a lot more time and effort for the ‘public’ to find these sites, yes they will continue to grift but it will be on a smaller scale, compared to Twitter these sites are tiny .

the dissemination of the name and location on the internet of these thousands upon thousands of right wing sites is exponential according to the various groups who monitor the web for extremist activity. a new name will float to the top of the popularity pool in a similar manner to a turd in a cess tank.

in many respects it is the opposite as the mainstream merely becomes oblivious to the activity. many people believe that it is no longer possible to download the parlar app to mobile phones since google, apple et al made their respective announcements. where as in reality there is a multitude of sites to download from.

This for me is the important piece. There are always going to people talking about and spreading these stories and views. There were long before the Internet.

However, if my auntie can't simply follow a link on FB to find it, then her, and many others like her, will return to (nearly) normal.

Without that groundswell of interest, then the Express etc. Will also focus elsewhere.

in the short time i have spent on this site, i have noticed a few dozen members, some of them being regular posters, directing people to various right wing hate sites in the forum threads. it seems it hasn't gone unoticed by others either, as some of those threads have disappeared along with the threads about the diappearing threads. this demonstrative as to the subtlety of the methods deployed by the right wing.

I think the reason is that its become more socially accepted to be of a fascist or nationalist inclination. 15 years ago the likes of Nick Griffin and David Duke were on the extreme. Then it underwent a rebranding and got some new advocates in the form of Trump and Farage. We're moving hard to the right, democracy is under attack, populism and ethno-nationalism is on the rise. You can't just blame the leaders though, there is a willing audience as well.

More accurate that the Overton Window has changed due vocal minorities on twitter and other social media which has caused a backlash. Stuff like the adpocalypse on youtube. The rise of critical race theory, the Gamergate stuff. Many more people calling for communist politics. Maoist struggle sessions enforced at places of work

It's even worse in America as it's even more polarised

It's almost like active measures is real and Yuri was right.

Problem is alot of 'normies' think they know what's going on because the Guardian has told them so, without having an actual fucking clue what's actually going on.

More accurate that the Overton Window has changed due vocal minorities on twitter and other social media which has caused a backlash. Stuff like the adpocalypse on youtube.

It's all over twitter. I'm not necessarily talking about actual Democrat party members, but these people are courted by the Democrats.

Vast majority of Antifa are communists either that or they just love the colour red and think the hammer and sickle is just a cool logo.

There is a reason why the antifaschistische aktion flag is red.

Nothing necessarily wrong with discussing it, but advocating an ideology that has ended in the death of millions over the world from starvation and persecution is just as bad as advocating for Nazism or general authoritarianism.

It's silly to write off a policy because it came from a regime that was awful.

Should we rip up all our motorways and drive everywhere on A roads because these kind of roads were a policy of nazi Germany?

“We will likely be down longer than expected,” wrote Matze. “This is not due to software restrictions — we have our software and everyone’s data ready to go. Rather it’s that Amazon’s, Google’s and Apple’s statements to the press about dropping our access has caused most of our other vendors to drop their support for us as well.”

He added: “Most people with enough servers to host us have shut their doors to us. We will update everyone and update the press when we are back online.”

And this will be the way that Trump will go with business to business, they just won't want him near anything they do.

The New York State Bar Association has launched an investigation to determine whether to expel Rudy Giuliani from its membership.

The legal group announced the inquiry in a statement, noting it has received “hundreds of complaints in recent months” about Giuliani’s work for Donald Trump.

The association specifically criticized Giuliani for his role in inciting a violent mob to storm the US Capitol last week.

Shortly before the riot occurred, Giuliani said at a pro-Trump rally in Washington, “If we’re wrong, we will be made fools of, but if we’re right a lot of them will go to jail. Let’s have trial by combat.”

“As the nation’s largest voluntary state bar association, NYSBA has a responsibility to defend and protect the rule of law,” the group said in its statement.

“Based on these complaints, and the statement Mr. Giuliani uttered shortly before the attack on the Capitol, NYSBA President Scott M. Karson has launched an inquiry pursuant to the Association’s bylaws to determine whether Mr. Giuliani should be removed from the membership rolls of the Association.”

I don't think he even considered that inciting people to fight etc in relation to where he sent them might lead to what it did but a nation that has sacrificed the blood of its men and women in the various global campaigns to preserve and allow the freedoms of others to have their type of democracy, and for the whole world to suddenly see this mob acting in the way they have for decades opposed and derided was too far..

Apparently the deletion mechanism for Parler was to put a label on the information to the effect of "please don't look at me"

I wonder which pieces of information the hackers will be looking at first?

Well two things will be of interest, one will be all the posts with embedded geolocation from 6th Jan. The other was a discussion thread where people 'confessed/boasted' about what they had done. Many tried after to delete the evidence after the shit hit the fan but alas.......

I think the not actually deleting data thing may be a GDPR violation as well.
