From the land of haribos.

Truck drivers tell of long delays for checks at the eurotunnel as the trade barrier goes up between uk and eu, they are starting to feel the effects of brexit, how long do you think the waiting time will be and will there be enough of space for them to wait at calais?

Roger arived in france at 2.30pm on tuesday with a truckload of hard cheese from somerset, it now will take some time for him to get to his destination.

But I thought brexit was going to reduce paperwork and red tape, or was that a lie?

"But I thought brexit was going to reduce paperwork and red tape, or was that a lie? "

That was never said. And remember MOST of the paperwork is set by the EU not the UK. And the UK have been banging on about the Access Permit (KAP) – being called the Brexit passport – which is issued electronically to trucks whose suppliers have to testify they have all their paperwork for the Channel crossing in order.

And some companies still haven't done it

I'm no expert but considering that upto Christmas eve,we didn't know if we would have a deal or not, where this 4 years to prepare comes from.

"Companies who have kept up to speed on the paperwork have kept going others have just thought it will be ok to just turn up and sort it on the day "

In 9 days 18 Thousand correctly filled Electronic Passports have been filled out correctly and those trucks have gone through without delays. 700 have been turned away - and 150 fined for non-compliance.

So by and large it's working.

We already knew what the paperwork would involve either way. So all comapnies did know.

Geezus My club even got one from DTI. Asking us whether we were prepared - twice. If you have driven on a motorway or stopped at a services in the last 4 years you will have seen it in 4 foot led lettering on every other above carriage way sign - Every toliet in every services had posters - every cafe had the light signs in .

Reading all this with interest..

We as a regular exporter along with every haulier and clearing house in the country have been asking daily for the last twelve months what are the processes? They were not ready and not published so please tell me what we were supposed to prepare with? Government did not have a fucking clue!

The full operation for us, not everyone, was not released until after Christmas with T1 update processes being issued on the 23rd December just in time for everyone’s holiday. Not really issued just an update on a website so you had to be looking* for it!

Drivers who need a T1 document are not allowed to go to the port until their client has started a clearance and been issued with an MRN . The haulier then registers with customs the vehicle then applies to attend a customs clearance post online or by text. He then waits for a text before he can travel to that post hopefully on route. . If the post is busy he is diverted elsewhere which could be 40 + miles off route. He then gets to attend and wait for the normal customs process which used to be done at the port.

Governments own words when running normally “expect 1-2 hour delay at the site”

The truck is then allowed to proceed to the port assuming he has a Kent pass and a Covid clear driver.

The whole process is being slowed down because the IT doesn’t work and there aren’t enough staff to cope. Ask Gove how many of those 50K customs officers needed have been recruited? Btw more expense when they are. Another Brexit saving?.

Do you have any idea how costly it is to divert and hold up £150k worth of truck on every load?

It’s running into hundreds of euros each and every time. When the volumes lift I hope they can cope. Otherwise those costs will go through the roof.

Absolute waste of everyone’s time and money.

Btw until this moment all this for countries outside the EU was done electronically so who’s kidding who?

There was no information so then what. How do you prepare then?

It was the government lining up to blame business just like making sure no queues in Dover. It’s bullshit central.

Gove said it will be the fault of business if there are problems.

Tell that to the Scottish fish exporters. When there aren’t enough government inspectors.

We had a Brexit team planning based on non EU exports but no information on the realty until Christmas. Last minute.com

It really was that late in the day. Government is still not ready. Our process is temporary we have been told. So why change it if this is the long term well thought out plan?

Laughable.

To Europe absolutely none of it. We only incurred costs previously with routes direct to Norway or on transits to Norway through Sweden. The rest was load and go then invoice. Some year long licences on some products but just sent in the truck for legal reasons not checked or submitted.

To add to our woes some clients want discharge of the T1 and clearance in another transit country rather than the country of destination so we have additional divert there too.

That’s our clients causing costs though not the U.K. so can’t blame the divert on U.K. . But the discharges are a direct result on DDP so additional costs directly attributable to Brexit. DAP we are paying by default on trade pricing so it’s another loss.

Yes I was just wondering if you knew what you were talking about? The Kent Access Pass is issued after the export is submitted and cleared to proceed for non transit and for trucks to arrive at a customs inland post should it be Ashford for a T1 .

The passport are issued when all is sorted so the fact that this is the green light towards the end of the process releasing the trucks for most shows you how bad it is if 700 still didn’t make it. These are given the governments go ahead and still don’t make it. FFS

"But I thought brexit was going to reduce paperwork and red tape, or was that a lie?

That was never said. And remember MOST of the paperwork is set by the EU not the UK. And the UK have been banging on about the Access Permit (KAP) – being called the Brexit passport – which is issued electronically to trucks whose suppliers have to testify they have all their paperwork for the Channel crossing in order.

And some companies still haven't done it

"

Removing red tape was a line trotted out by all the leave campaigns, parties and media.

Here's an example from prior to the referendum.

it appears from several articles in todays assorted press that an increasing amount of companies are stopping trading between the UK & EU as a result of the extra tariffs, taxes and governmental red tape outweighing the profitability of the transactions rather than failing to be able to understand the process. it seems a shame.

You only get a passport when you pass the process. Someone is fibbing somewhere in that fact.

I knew a guy taking advantage of cheap export trucking who could buy straw in the U.K. and sell it in The Netherlands undercutting the local supply because the haulage was so cheap compared to domestic trucking in Holland.

I wonder if he still has that advantage. I’m thinking probably not.

Indeed the vote was for leave but did they know the cost of stopping immigrants would be so costly

and damaging to business?

Stopping 3000 benefit claimants from Bulgaria is not really worth it in my opinion. Sovereignty for what it’s worth doesn’t put food on tables it just waves cloth flags for the people facing backwards believing empire will be the future.

Sadly the world is moving on without us.

Hi Foxy

I’m not for one moment accusing everyone of racism so apologies if that’s the impression I gave.

I have a personal friend who I’ve known for 30 years and he’s a Brexiteer. His only argument is to stop immigrants. He runs a business and all his argument has been stop the foreigners. My Opinion of him had fallen but he lives on the east coast inundated with seasonal farm workers so is his view skewered?

The headlines claiming “how many more can we take?” or the fact that 75 percent of news articles stated illegal immigration rather than just immigration in the title have lead to a bias against foreign workers. Remember a million Turks?

The fact that most immigration in the U.K. every year comes from outside of Europe has passed so many people by.

So yes I have a biased view on the close our borders brigade as I suspect a great many are mislead by the media.

I do not ever wish to accuse anyone of racism so please rest assured it’s the anti immigration I rile against.

Immigration has made this country great and to blame hard worker Eastern European’s for our own countries problems is cheap and easy.

Our own younger generation don’t want the jobs so why not offer them out? They all pay tax so that’s a good thing.

My view on Brexit is it is lead by very rich people wanting to avoid the tax regime planned by the EU and it’s that simple. They would have been made to pay more or at least something. Those are the people who’s own vested interests have lead this country to such a nightmare position.

Dutch rhubarb not available now

Had to buy English same price poorer quality but beneficial to English growers

Already proving the benifits coming to the UK

In a small way

Bet you'll be over the moon with the hormone and steroid beef as well.

As everyone saying harder to export so sell in UK instead of shipping round the world but British !!

Go bj

What about the coconuts ?

They’ve never been grown in eu

No change there then "

So it's just rhubarb, carrots potatoes and cabbage then all costing the same but poorer quality, the stuff we dont grow we cant get any more or will cost more. Wow this brexit pig is something else.

"it appears from several articles in todays assorted press that an increasing amount of companies are stopping trading between the UK & EU as a result of the extra tariffs, taxes and governmental red tape outweighing the profitability of the transactions rather than failing to be able to understand the process. it seems a shame.

I knew a guy taking advantage of cheap export trucking who could buy straw in the U.K. and sell it in The Netherlands undercutting the local supply because the haulage was so cheap compared to domestic trucking in Holland.

I wonder if he still has that advantage. I’m thinking probably not.

Apparently less consumer choice is a brexit benefit for some people.

British growers chance to make a come back after being undercut by government supported suppliers from eu

Dutch growers guaranteed a price from Dutch government if goes above that price they keep the extra if falls below get guaranteed price

English growers sends stock to market gets market price could be £1 could be £10 that’s why there’s few British growers left

Get behind your country buy British

This level of confusion combined with misplaced blame is the stereotype for the average brexit voter. I'm sure this is how the rest of the world sees us all these days.

It demonstrates how easy it was to convince people that everything wrong with the UK was down to the EU. In this lads example, Dutch domestic policy, is the EUs fault.

How would you determine which remainers should be booted out?

This is going around in circles. You voted away the freedom of movement within the EU. Many of us aren't rich enough to meet the criteria to relocate to another country. Let's knock this on the head now eh?

I am interested in who you think should get out of the UK. And how this would help make a success of Brexit.

Okay.

So in summary you're saying brexit is good because.

1. The EU are to blame for the Dutch government's produce policy.

2. There will be more British tomatoes grown, but the exact reasoning is unclear and unimportant.

3. We will only be able to buy weird looking rhubarb.

4. You personally haven't been looking very hard for British produce on the shelves, and you hope now it will be easier to spot.

5. If people don't like it, get out of the UK, even though we can't because most of us don't have the funds to.

Did I get that right?

This was less interesting than I hoped.

And can you imagine the Mountains of red tape that we used to do every single day in the EU parliament in:

The European Council.

The Council of the European Union.

The European Parliament.

The European Commission.

Each with its own subsection of commissions and committees of Presidents and members and journals and minutes and secretariat directives that are printed every day and need to be signed in to each day. The Budget committees. The Oversight committees. The Defence committees. The humanitarian committees. The Court of Justice. The Development partnership. The monetary Union and financial services department. The department for Trade. The Energy committee. Infrastructure. Telecommunications and space. Agriculture and fisheries. Competition. Labour market. Social policy and equality. Regional and local policy. Environment and climate. Education and research. Health care and food safety - Committees & directorate . . . .

The Treaty Concordats and additions and rationalisations and presentations to the Parliament for discussion and voting - the voting lobbies . . . and that isn't even close to being what is done each day with direct regard to paperwork and red-tape.

It was never just bits of border crossing paperwork that was being talked about.

I sell fruit and veg

Dutch rhubarb not available now

Had to buy English same price poorer quality but beneficial to English growers

Already proving the benifits coming to the UK

In a small way

Bet you'll be over the moon with the hormone and steroid beef as well."

Hormones and steroids have been banned in the UK for many years. Animal husbandry in the UK has always been far healthier than its EU counterparts. BSE was labelled a UK only 'disease' but talking to a Min of Ag vet at the time it was also on the continent but they managed to get round the bans etc by saying it was rabies. Animal foodstuffs were imported and exported. I also remember the EU standing by as French farmers hijacked lorries of UK lamb and burning the carcasses in the street as well as pouring tankers of Italian wine down the drain. Unity only seems to work if self interest is put aside or you're not France or Germany. I've stood and watched milk being poured down the drain because of quota's that were introduced but tankers of milk were coming across from Holland and the like. Where's the sense in that? Fishing quotas have also been a huge mistake. Not because of the limits that are put on, conservationally that's a good thing, but throwing dead fish back? Conservation goes out the window. Stupid idea, not very well thought out.

As for fruit and veg, we are more than capable of growing a lot of it ourselves. Seasonally. If you want fresh strawberries in December, why shouldn't you pay a premium for them? They've probably been imported from Spain or the like, now the opportunity has been opened up to other countries, perhaps South Africa or the Americas? Further away but competition for the Spanish etc for fruit may actually be a good thing. As for chlorinated chicken, you've been eating food that has been chlorinated for many years. Lettuce for example and I'm sure there will be others. If food is labelled with its origin then surely the housewife or husband can make their own choice on what to buy?

I can't see why the US would dictate how we label food produced in our country or food labelled by origin in other countries. If the food from the US isn't labelled then that would speak for itself. A lot of British food is labelled as produced in the UK anyway. Not all food from the EU has been, hopefully now it would be. Can't vouch for that though.

We keep being told the world is getting smaller, so why shouldn't we look elsewhere for food. It may even be better quality. Previously EU legislation has stopped us from looking elsewhere and doing trade deals, which is why they have been 'our biggest trading partner'. Now we can arrange trade deals with other countries, hopefully to our advantage. Of course that will depend on our negotiating teams, which may be a disadvantage as we haven't had to do it for many years. So far so good though I feel!

You won't find much food in containers. Certainly not perishable food anyway. Frozen yes. A lot comes in on commercial airlines in the hold. No more expensive. Flowers for example, from South Africa or South America will be transported in this way, so I see no reason that perishable food shouldn't either and probably has been.

So you're saying that brexit is about helping our the Americas and South Africa?

Interesting perspective.

I hope you're right that our government doesn't crumble to the US demands to remove food origin labelling.

Deliberately misquoting is a pretty poor show tbh.

The post above clearly says opening up the market to competition.

It often seems that the remainers are far more inward looking and parochial than the Brexiteers forging the new British Empire.

I'm not interested in your bizarre calls for a new British empire.

Making imported food more expensive is a weird brexit benefit.

The empire thing is in reverse for now, the UK can't trade freely within it's national borders.

and 26 NEW world trade agreements already in place.

Any that we didn't have as part of the EU?"

Yes. 25 of them. Any many more in various stages of negotiation. The EU is at £640 million continuance deal, we never lost it and it is resigned.

Plus many more in late stage negotiations

it's all easy to find.

"Lol a container from Spain probably couple of thousand a container from south America must be 4 or 5 times as expensive. Just so many brexit financial wizards about

That's why everything is so much more expensive when it comes from China.

I don't see much food produce from China in my local shops.

What I do see is electrics and other such products made in china which are less expand due to labour and materials being cheaper

*Less expensive.

In 2018, China's food exports to the United Kingdom amounted to around 451.94 million U.S. dollars, increasing from about 399.22 million U.S. dollars in the previous year."

I have no concept of how much this is compared to EU countries. Did your source put it into perspective?

I knew a guy taking advantage of cheap export trucking who could buy straw in the U.K. and sell it in The Netherlands undercutting the local supply because the haulage was so cheap compared to domestic trucking in Holland.

I wonder if he still has that advantage. I’m thinking probably not.

Hormones and steroids have been banned in the UK for many years. Animal husbandry in the UK has always been far healthier than its EU counterparts. I don't read all the brexit threads. They're depressing as fuck.

But if we do have a trade deal with 25 countries we didn't have deals with as part of the EU. I would gladly read about them.

Between Chichester and Havant

"Lol a container from Spain probably couple of thousand a container from south America must be 4 or 5 times as expensive. Just so many brexit financial wizards about

Sounds expensive and CO2 intensive. "

Not if the flight is already happening due to holiday makers and business or the other reasons people fly across the world every day. A separate argument for me. Holidays abroad are a luxury not a right, which many in this country with their holidays to Spain or Florida, seem to forget.

Any that we didn't have as part of the EU?

Yes. 25 of them. Any many more in various stages of negotiation. The EU is at £640 million continuance deal, we never lost it and it is resigned.

Plus many more in late stage negotiations

it's all easy to find.

Can you give an example, so I can look. Because this is news to me.

Late stage negiotions lol may be a while before we see some news .

The sky is falling the sky is falling:

The Remoaner:

"is a person who wants to change the results of Thursday 23 June 2016 EU Referendum in the UK. Behaviour is typified by muttering under their breath about things that may or may not happen in the future. Oh and taking their ball home, when reminded that the Election was Democratically undertaken. is over, or we now need to get on with it, no matter what residual feelings they have left about how it was so derived."

"

I asked for information. And you just throw out lame insults like this.

Pointless.

"Lol a container from Spain probably couple of thousand a container from south America must be 4 or 5 times as expensive. Just so many brexit financial wizards about

Sounds expensive and CO2 intensive.

Not if the flight is already happening due to holiday makers and business or the other reasons people fly across the world every day. A separate argument for me. Holidays abroad are a luxury not a right, which many in this country with their holidays to Spain or Florida, seem to forget.

So sticking some frozen veg on a tourist plane?

"

Do you misunderstand purposely? I didn't say frozen. Read again, you'll see I said perishable. Which already happens!

Look in the sky on a clear day and tell me how many contrails you can see. Probably as many as pre-pandemic.

Okay. Chuck some produce on a tourist flight from South Africa or america? What's the suggestion for the food safety standard issues?

And how does this benefit us when we previously had access to produce that didn't have to travel as far?
