well considering Republican Derrick Evans,

newly appointed state lawmaker in the West Virginian House of Delegates, now has his face all over the international media, it will be absolutely fascinating to find out. from here it really isn't looking good for the GOP at all to have far right insurrectionists orchestrating yesterdays failed Coup d'état.

Well when ivanka posts a tweet calling them patriots, don jr having a party and cheering on the protesters on ig, and Eric threatening to ruin any republican politicians going against trump.... you know why they are going into damage control

Them and Rudy lit the matches and walked away whistling.....

it appears that after Trump told the supporters gathered at the Eclipse, that he would escort them along Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol, then promptly climbed into a waiting vehicle and was driven back to the whitehouse to watch the coup d'etat develop from there on TV.

his supporters must be relieved in the knowledge that the POTUS has their back.

Absolutely baffling that someone would waste their life in such a ridiculous way storming the capitol as that army vet did.

I get the impression from various interviews over the years that the more fringe supporters of American parties have almost no idea what they are even protesting against.

Did the democrats recover from the disgusting riots that a lot of their politicians backed from a few months ago, yes they did. Can the republicans separate themselves from Trump that should be the question. Slightly different as the UK but did the British people forgive the Torys for Thatcher yes they did, they voted in Major & that was even after they new what he was like xx

it appears that the conservative and unionist cabinet are now treading water furiously in an attempt to distance themselves from the sycophancy they displayed, whilst fawning over the american populist right wing administration and embracing it's agenda during the last 4 years. it seems it is slowly dawning on the government that they are becoming increasingly isolated on the world stage as one by one the support for populist right wing administrations around the globe continues to crumble with increasing speed.

The way that trump incited the brainless mob to storm the Capitol with his inflammatory speech and call to arms to right the wrong against him, made me remember the actions of Ian paisley back in the 70s and 80s, his firey speeches calling for the mobliasion of the protestant paramilitaries to attack the catholic community resulted in hundreds of deaths, then when there purpose was served he turned his back on them, the similarities with trump's latest stunt are very worrying,

The real danger is now not trump the man but the evil forces he has unleashed

Trump's managed to unite a lot of groups of angry people of various numbers. One of the groups are of Trump supporters brainwashed by Fox and some Republican politicians into believing Trump's lie that the election was rigged. But a lot of others, the anti-Semites, the gun nuts etc would have joined any violent insurrection.

The problem a lot of white Americans have is much the same as a lot of white British people have here: a nagging feeling of entitlement, frustration at others they think are better off, a bit of sometimes secret racism, and so on. They don't seem to accept that they're comfortable and relatively well off and there's little to get angry and murderous about.

You think military air support will be used on American targets on American soil? It takes several levels of approval to use air support on enemy targets engaged in combat against coalition (yours and mine) forces in shit holes like Syria! You must be one of those who thinks the US President actually pushes the red nuke everyone button, padlocks the Central American terrorist kids into the cell, or adds the last drop of whatever that makes it a vaccine. Maybe you think he gives the detailed brief to his followers of how and when to breach government buildings. Certainly his intent is to make sure they properly erect the gallows, get that computer off Nancy’s desk and all get the chant about hanging Pence right. Oh, and I almost forgot how he probably instructed specifically how to inject yourself with fish tank cleaner to cure your sniffles mistaken for COVID.

Believe whatever you wish to believe, but that doesn't change the fact that it's already been authorized in Washington DC if needed. Their in the process of authorizing it in other areas of the US as well, if needed, but that hasn't gotten the green light as of yet.

Just so you can learn something you obviously don't know, air support has many different aspects to it that is all part of air support.

Obviously, their not going to be shooting air to ground missiles or a mini gun at our own citizens. These are well trained military personnel making the decisions on what is needed, not that idiot trump this time.

Do you think so? Or is it just a new freak show?

I mean trump is a figurehead for a collective who have been driving his behaviour (like all Presidents before)... From a distance it seems much repair work is required... Rather like on our own shores.

"If it goes down it will go down asymmetrical. Lots of these prior military know how to fight it. Airpower tanks and any other military hardware is negated. Hence the learnings from prior wars. Show of force is not a deterrence there are ways around that."

I am just astounded that people in your country cannot see what they have and try to protect it. I mean Liberty, freedom, relative wealth. The idiots who support Trump, Qanon and other right wing are throwing away hard won rights. It is a small minority of people, but they are loud. It is time the silent majority said no. I would have thought the massive win for Biden on popular vote and EC was enough. The fact that Republicans called this election the safest, the fact that republicans defended the voting in Georgia, the fact that no evidence was ever produced by Trump of any malpractice. How weak are these people!?

There is some merit in what you say although again, it's not just the people you mention who are challenging hard won freedoms, as has been argued on here many times already, there are extremists on all sides who are challenging the status quo. I think with all of these situations it's important to understand context and history of how we got to this place. Disenfranchised working class are ignored at your peril, Christian traditionalists are ignored at your peril, so it's important to engage with them and not just demonise them. What goes around comes around.

If their had been a Democrat President, Democrat Senate and Democrat House of Representatives for the past 4 years ignoring the poor white working class and the evangelical christians then I might have some sympathy. But the US has been run by ‘their people’ for at least 4 years and they still complain about it being a Democrat plot!?

All Trump has done is to fill the swamp with bigger alligators. Any sane working class ‘white’ person should vote Democrat, any sane person should vote Democrat. The Republicans don’t care about their country, they only care about themselves.

And that's your view and you can't help yourself but antagonise. All I'm saying is engagement and stopping insulting eachother is a better way to get to an answer. A "one party" system isn't a democracy and you should be careful what you wish for. Every presidential term there has been some good and some not so good. They are of the people and for the people. Im not sure you can say all republicans don't care for their country. People are entitled to different views and working together is better than permanent discord.

I dont think anybody on the thread is disagreeing with that. I think the point is about all sides engaging with eachother rather than provoking and insulting eachother. Insulting 74m people (if that's what the number is) isn't a good way of getting them to work towards an agenda.

To add to this, the republicans gained seats in Congress and barely lost in the Senate.

It's beyond hypocrisy to ask for bipartisanship when the GOP has been the party of obstruction since Obama was elected. McConnell referred to himself as the grim reaper because the Senate was the place where Bills came to die.

The Democrats regained control of Congress in 2018. Maybe it's just me but I don't see the role of a political party is to block and harass, That's not government, that's obstruction of government.

Disenfranchised working class are ignored at your peril, Christian traditionalists are ignored at your peril, so it's important to engage with them and not just demonise them. What goes around comes around.

Probably the best post of the week...

...If they were demonized, it was by their own leaders as the Republicans have been in power for 4 years As the Republicans have failed them, give Biden a chance don’t ask for more Trump

He is spot on the working class.Division was caused by both sides. Republicans were not in charge thy just had the senate and presidency. Now Democrats are in full charge wanting enact their full agenda. It is not sitting well with 74 million. They lost their voice.

It is what the US voted for in a democratic election

I dont think anybody on the thread is disagreeing with that. I think the point is about all sides engaging with eachother rather than provoking and insulting eachother. Insulting 74m people (if that's what the number is) isn't a good way of getting them to work towards an agenda.

Were you saying the same thing when Hillary won the popular vote or is it just convenient now?"

OK, couple of things. I wasn't saying anything 4 years ago as I wasn't on here. But the principle of course still applies. Who ever wins, and that doesn't just mean the president and his leaders team, it means at local levels and individual levels, yes absolutely the same applies. If you keep provoking people and calling them or their values insane etc thenniy just promotes division. Is it better that 74m people work toward a goal or 150m people?

"If it goes down it will go down asymmetrical. Lots of these prior military know how to fight it. Airpower tanks and any other military hardware is negated. Hence the learnings from prior wars. Show of force is not a deterrence there are ways around that.

Dems still had Congress . Past 4 years. Now it's their turn to harass and block if necessary.

The Democrats regained control of Congress in 2018. Maybe it's just me but I don't see the role of a political party is to block and harass, That's not government, that's obstruction of government."

I think that's the issue with bipartisan politics isn't it.? And largely the same in the UK too. National interests usually come second to things that will either win votes or at the least not lose votes. Doing what's easy instead of what's right.

Every person who entered the Capital Biulding by force, assaulted officers in any way, damaged property ect...ect..., should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Trump should also be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

An example needs to be made that you don't listen to lies, conspiracy therories, nonsense propaganda ect...ect... from any social media platform, news media, self serving politicians who wish to further spread lies and falsehoods, and

definitely not from an unhinged dictator minded president like trump, that has acted that way from day one ! Trump followed Hitlers propaganda model right down the line !

Prosecute Them All !!!

Many of trumps followers won't like it, but they will have to live with the fact they listened to nothing but lies and they picked an unhinged guy to follow for the last four years.

They either live with the truth, or face the consequences of their actions !

Then the country can begin to heal, because justice will have been done !!!

Yes, if you fail to learn from history you are destined to repeat it, as we have just witnessed.

Now, everyone needs to witness accountability for their traitorist terrorist actions before we move forward.

Mainly, those trump supporters that would endorse such unpatriotic neo-nazi endeavors, because of lies and propaganda from the president and his cronies, need to see and realize such traitorist terrorist actions, by any individuals or any organizations, against our Democratic Republic, will never ever be tolerated

in the United States of America.

Justifiable Accountability, is a mechanism that perpetuates healing in any society !

I'm watching the (second) Trump impeachment on CNN and have just heard two Republican house members defending Trump by saying the Democrats are even more violent than Trump supporters. Even the House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy decided to mention in his speech a nonsense talking point about Antifa infiltrating and encouraging the rioters. (He said there was nothing to it, but he put a conspiracy theory in the Congressional Record.) These antics are disgusting and astonishing: if the Republicans don't stand up to a president who has planned and encouraged a coup that led to four people killed, their party will continue to die.

The calls by some of the republicans for unity, coming together and healing are pretty vomit inducing given some of them empowered and enabled trump in his anti democracy antics post the election then even after he incited a riot against the core of the countries democratic heart they still voted against recognition of the countries choice of President..

And now they call for healing, hypocrites..

Yes, it's an attempt to pretend the Democrats are the ones at fault for getting disgruntled about a violent insurrection against the seat of government in which two police died, one murdered. Republicans love to talk about unity, fiscal responsibility, bipartisanship etc when they're in the minority in government.

Seemed more like a intel op. 2 bombs set as a diversion. Classified info missing good times. If it were a coup I don't think they would have done it without better fire support. Seems weird. Was too well executed.

"If it goes down it will go down asymmetrical. Lots of these prior military know how to fight it. Airpower tanks and any other military hardware is negated. Hence the learnings from prior wars. Show of force is not a deterrence there are ways around that.

Were you saying the same thing when Hillary won the popular vote or is it just convenient now?

Exactly, I don’t remember Trump giving a shit about the 66 million people who voted for Hillary Clinton

Remember the russian collusion ? Remember Nancy Pelosi screaming on twitter that the election was Hijacked? Even after a investigation ? Same politics different outcome."

There's absolutely no equivalence between now and 4 years ago.

Yes I agree no equivalence there was 3 1/2 years of investigation about Russian collusion no evidence found & no investigation into any electoral fraud this time, & no I’m not saying there was either. Just nothing to see here now move along it went the way we wanted it to, if Trump had won again you would of had another Russian collusion story for 4 more years.

There was Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Russian had the specific aim of electing Donald TrumpCriminal proceedings arising from the Mueller report was initiated against 34 people—seven U.S. nationals, 26 Russian nationals, and one Dutch national—and three Russian organizations

The Mueller report found ten instances where Donald Trump may have obstructed justice while president.

The Senate Intelligence Committee report on Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election presents a much broader view and concludes there was coordinated activity between the Trump campaign and Russia.

There is no evidence of electoral fraud to warrant an investigation as confirmed by Trump's Dept of Justice and Dept of Homeland Security.

You seem much more informed on this than I am. Weren't some of trumps players jailed for either lying to Congress or the courts or both to protect trump and then subsequently given presidential pardons?

That aside. Round and around it goes. At some point people have to draw a line under things and move on and accept that there has been activities, sometimes criminal in the past. But surely the best is to focus on the future and fi ding a way to heal the rifts and work together? Otherwise you just end up loving in the past permanently.

It is going to go around and around. I hear it everyday 19 minutes into his inauguration they where calling for impeachment. Hunter biden story hidden. There will be no unity. Hence why alot of house Republicans did not vote to impeach the second time. Pissed off constituents. One side days violence is ok if you are protesting. Once more with the false equivalences. Hunter Biden has nothing to with this and to date has only been the target of smear campaigns.

That was the most bipartisan impeachment in American history. 10 republican members of congress voted to impeach the president.

The democrats did not incite, instigate or support violence.

It's beyond delusional hypocrisy to call for unity. What they are actually asking for is impunity.

Democrats supported protests, can you cite some instances of leading democrats supporting violence? To be credible try to find something outside the right wing bubble.

There's an additional point I have to make to this. The Democratic Party is not BLM or Antifa. The Democratic party is closer to the Republican than to BLM

Remember all the Biden flags BLM looters and rioters were carrying? Yeah, me neither.

Any democratic affiliation is coincidental with BLM. With the coup, trump affiliation is causal.

Some people used the cover of BLM protests to loot. Likewise, it seems like the insurrection at the Capitol was a large group of far-right protestors with some particularly dangerous militants using them as cover to get inside.

The key differences are that:

the clowns in D.C. were protesting to overturn a democratically elected government because they've been brainwashed by Fox News pundits and republicans opportunistically telling them lies and social media indoctrinating them into a demented cult while BLM was protesting against the constant, well-documented murder of minorities by police. There's no equivalence in purpose.

BLM protests resulted in some federal property damage like tagging and a few broken windows. The insurrection was an armed takeover of the seat of the U.S. government that left five people dead, resulted in a breach of national security information and put lawmakers, including a substantial portion of the line of succession, in direct and serious danger. There's no equivalence in methodology.

There is NO equivalence between the deadly insurrection last week and BLM protests. None. That's a straight up lie spread by the terrorists and their sympathizers to try and downplay and excuse away a straight-up attack on the U.S. Capitol building in an attempted coup. If it had just been jackasses milling around waving their white supremacist flags and shouting lies about the election before going home, it would have been a protest. A stupid protest of stupid people based on stupid lies, but a protest none-the-less.

the clowns in D.C. were protesting to overturn a democratically elected government because they've been brainwashed by Fox News pundits and republicans opportunistically telling them lies and social media indoctrinating them into a demented cult while BLM was protesting against the constant, well-documented murder of minorities by police.

A stupid protest of stupid people based on stupid lies, but a protest none-the-less."

Very well put

They will assume, like the rest of us, that the drastic change in tone over the past few days is the result someone controlling what's he's saying.

I don't think it will change their views.

"It is going to go around and around. I hear it everyday 19 minutes into his inauguration they where calling for impeachment. Hunter biden story hidden. There will be no unity. Hence why alot of house Republicans did not vote to impeach the second time. Pissed off constituents. One side days violence is ok if you are protesting. The other side saying any for of violence is not ok. On and on.

I'm not sure I understand your last sentence. Are you saying that we shouldn't be suggesting unity is better than being divided.?or that it's hypocritical to suggest it..? I have no skin in this game but division and further division is not a good path to follow surely? "

Ok here's what we know. Trump with the aid of allies and members of the republican party have tried to overturn the Presidential election results. Long before the attack on congress, they were trying to hinder voting, then trying stop votes being counted. Next trying to stop results being certified at local state and federal levels. With no credible evidence at all they promoted the false allegation that Biden had stole the election. All of this culminated in inciting a seditious mob to march on the Capitol with the intent of using violence to overturn the election result.

Asking for unity after promoting division, fracture and inciting terrorism with impunity is hypocrisy. Before unity there's a least 2 preresquites, the first is truth and the second is justice.

4 Americans died in the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, without checking I think there was 5 separate republican led investigations to determine if the Obama administration was negligent (they weren't). To date, there has been 6 deaths arising from the attack on the Capitol. It would be a tragedy not to investigate what led to this attack and how can it be prevented from happening again.

Last month an election official in Georgia asked the President to stop promoting conspiracy theories because someone will get killed because of them. The president didn't stop and we know the rest.

He has plenty of time to intervene when it was all happening, he could have either broadcast to them to stop at anytime before they stormed the building.

But he and his family cheered them on

At least 3/4 of all Trump voters believe that the election was stolen no matter what evidence is presented to them that it was free and fair.

If you keep telling people a lie you will convince enough people and even believe it yourself. Then be unable to distinguish fact from fiction.

This is how despots, dictators and tyrants behave.

History has enough examples of this.

The 'big lie' school of politics has been a mainstay of US republicans for longer than I care to think. Trump just added steroids to the big lie to incite grievance and foster division.
