Classic brexit.

Cause a problem by restricting access to the country for people from the EU. Then triumphantly claim to have solved it with a no doubt expensive and bureaucratic solution.

Good work.

Even the express is now worrying about the job situation due to Brexit. They’ve added the Covid virus to avoid being too controversial to their readers but it clearly says jobs at risk.

You mean it worked well when we were in the EU? That will be news to farmers, From 2017:

“Fruit and vegetable farms across the UK were left short of thousands of migrant workers in 2017, leaving some produce to rot in the fields and farmers suffering big losses.

More than 4,300 vacancies went unfilled, according to new survey data from the National Farmers Union (NFU), which covers about half the horticultural labour market. The survey, seen exclusively by the Guardian, shows more than 99% of the seasonal workers recruited came from eastern Europe, with just 0.6% from the UK.”

Now we get to choose who we want and from wherever in the world we want them.

After the vote, of course no one wanted to come here after the referendum.

Look back prior to 2016 and you'll find a different story.

And I realise that your belief in Brexit is absolute. And you are blind to the all the downsides. Which makes me wonder why you keep joining the debate.

Yes that should lower unemployment for U.K. workers but Brexiteers on here are trying to encourage foreign workers. Tories originally said they have to earn £30k or more to be allowed. Farmers started coughing and wheezing before leaving the crops to rot.

The foreign workers are going to be paid a lot more than before to come as they know they’re not welcome anymore.

Farmers who voted for Brexit. Wonders never cease. No subsidy replacement and more expensive workers. Who at the NFU thought that was the way forward.

Still they got exactly what they voted for so all good eh!

Why were Romanian immigrants exploited and living in appalling conditions? Who was doing this? How much is the going rate for picking fruit in the UK? "

Why? Because Brussels allows it and doesn’t protect farm workers across Europe, from July 2020:

“The EU’s common agricultural policy – which accounts for over a third of the bloc's budget – aims to support farm owners and pumps nearly €60 billion into the sector each year. The working conditions of those employed by these farms, however, are not even mentioned in the subsidies scheme.

"At the moment we have this crazy situation where we actually have better protection for animals than for some of these workers on our farms," said German Green MEP Daniel Freund.

In a joint investigation with Lighthouse Reports, Der Spiegel and Mediapart, Euronews interviewed dozens of farmworkers across the continent, most of them cross-border migrants.

They complained of unpaid hours, working under tremendous pressure, with very little water or protection, some fainting and vomiting from the exhaustion. They showed us dire housing conditions and spoke of cases of verbal, physical and even sexual abuse.“

Gang masters on U.K. farms have been doing this for many years before the EU and that’s both to U.K. and foreign workers. They will continue to exploit after Brexit too!

Exploitation won’t stop by banning workers from a country.

It’s a sad reflection of low skilled work throughout the world but you do at least have some protection with Europe in law if not in enforcement.

Remember it’s our government in charge of enforcement.

The gang masters are British overseeing U.K. and foreign contractors who pay the workers.

I’ve just shown you that it wasn’t being picked when we were in the EU, 2017 was bad but 2014 was also a very bad year for picker shortages.

Carry on ignoring the facts if they are inconvenient for you

""Brexit: Ministers to treble number of foreign fruit and veg pickers to ease fears of rotting harvests"

"In a major concession to worried farmers, 30,000 temporary staff will be given permits in 2021, up from 10,000 this year, under a document circulated for an announcement due next week."

"The easing is likely to increase pressure on ministers to consider exemptions from the new immigration rules for other sectors facing worsening worker shortages, particularly social care."

- The Independent.

Good news. Also shows that you can bring in the people you want at a time you want

Why can’t these jobs be filled by UK workers ?

Because you can’t get British people to work that hard in harsh conditions and live in a caravan for 3 months for low wages

Well if we got all the unemployed woke youth out there it would be easier. Government should force then into the fields to learn the value of work.

Introduce national service for farming, two years minimum.

Why should the ‘youth’ have to do this ? Every Brexit voter should sign up and do their bit to help

Don’t make me laugh."

Why not? They didn’t want immigrants doing unskilled work, it is what they voted for

Sounds like you were perfectly happy to have Romanian immigrants exploited on low wages living in appalling conditions ten to a caravan in the UK. Out of sight out of mind eh.

Now workers, including UK workers, will have to be paid the market rate.

Why were Romanian immigrants exploited and living in appalling conditions? Who was doing this? How much is the going rate for picking fruit in the UK?

They showed us dire housing conditions and spoke of cases of verbal, physical and even sexual abuse.“"

"Maybe remainers should just pick it instead of worrying about it

Remainders were happy it was being picked, the farmers were making a profit and workers paying tax.

Now the crop rots the farmers lose money and HMRC lose tax . Is that another win ?

It’s like saying my lottery didn’t come up but that’s a good thing because I won’t buy the wrong coloured sports car!

I’ve just shown you that it wasn’t being picked when we were in the EU, 2017 was bad but 2014 was also a very bad year for picker shortages.

So brexit is good because its is exacerbating an existing issue.

Is that your argument?

You are correct it has been getting harder to recruit labour on picking farms as the years go by,

The fruit and berry picking firms have said however since the referendum it has got considerably and consistently harder to recruit enough workers.

Eastern workers were helping to fill the gap.

Less people want to do hard work so being able recruit willing workers was helping .

So banning the Eastern European workers is helping how exactly?

Do you have masochist tendencies?

Why do you think the eu want to expand to include countries like Albania ? just more cheap labour .the answer is to mechanise which a lot of farmers are now doing labour intensive farming will eventually become a thing of the past.
