"paranoia or what. " What is positive about hormone injected stock years beef? I really am trying to avoid the Brexit here and get everyone to look up how the Americans rear their cattle. It’s just chemicals all the way. In the states regarding food, the consumer has to prove its not safe,. The producer does not have to prove it is. Food poisoning in the US is on a different scale to the U.K. For a western country it’s horrific. We have to do a deal with the us at some point but are we really so desperate to let this lowering happen?

If it even makes its way here. They've already discussed removing labelled requirements. Besides, if they reduce the food safety standards, it will allow British producers to start lowering their standards to compete. So even if we did keep labelling, produce being from the UK would not guarantee anything. " When was that then,do you have a gov link?

"Brexit is done an dusted and we can argue the pro and cons forever. You all know my view. This I think is actually more important because it is about our whole countries health. I have family in the US and they have to search out healthy food because the US standard produced is really that bad. Big pharma is the biggest lobby in the US and payrolls the senators to keep the laws lax on food safely. American politics is controlled by big business as sadly that’s where we are heading. Just my opinion and this is aimed at Labour and Tory . MP’s should not be allowed to work or consult for any organisation whilst an MP. This ban should also last for two years after . Keep them on pay by all means but after two years they won’t be able to exploit their connections. " Agree completely.

"The American senior negotiator asked about demands to adapt UK food standards on beef and chicken, as well as reforms to the way the NHS pays for US medicines, Mr Lighthizer said: "These negotiations are ongoing. "You know, clearly, the US needs to get additional access to the agricultural market in the UK - that's an important part of it, each side has to get something out of it. These are complicated technical issues. And they're the kinds of things that will be worked out, I think, in the in the final stages of negotiation." To translate - more expensive drugs for the NHS, GM crops, Chlorinated chicken, Why as a nation are we prepared to allow American crap food to even be considered being allowed into this country? “The NHS is not for sale” no, but it’s about to get a lot more expensive. I’m not arguing about Brexit here. This is just wrong. We seem to be selling ourselves for a few pieces of silver. It’s our children that will suffer here. Yes tariffs on whiskey to the USA will drop. Have you seen Diageo and Chivas profits? They are huge and aren’t suffering due to tariffs. A deal at any cost? " Back to the OP, how on earth do you translate Mr Lighthizers comment into GM crops and chlorinated chicken? Is this something you’ve got from Karen off Facebook?

"More expensive drugs from America you say? What, compared to the price collusion that took place while we were in the EU? Last year: “Four pharmaceutical firms have been accused of illegally colluding to restrict the supply of an anti-nausea tablet, driving the price paid for it by the NHS up by 700%. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said the cost of prochlorperazine rose from £6.49 per pack to £51.68, after suppliers agreed not to compete. The drug is often prescribed to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.”" Look up patent licence limits imposed in the EU compared to the US. Then tell me drugs aren’t going to get expensive a lot quicker for us all in the U.K. If I go on Google as you seem to do a lot I can get a much bigger list of corruption in US pharma and far more class actions. The four “U.K.” registered companies in this action you are referring to are distributors of medicine so in effect the logistics chain not the development patent holding giants holding court in any country. Not related to Brussels in any way. Do you really want to compare Europe with the capital of lawsuits America? Really?. Ferry companies collude. Banks collude. The art is not getting caught so you’re point has nothing to do with my original post on food safety and in fact supports my point against corrupt big Pharma which is dominant in American food.

Why is salad chlorine washed and is it a good thing? " To stop bacteria forming after production. Please see below explaining this and the reason American chicken is such a high risk. The Committee on Toxicity, a government department, carried out tests of chlorine-washed bagged salads and detected chlorine levels that were lower than those found in drinking water. The purpose of chlorine-washing chicken at the end of the production line is to kill bacteria such as campylobacter, salmonella and E coli, which can cause food poisoning. To minimise bacterial contamination and the risk of food poisoning, farmers in the UK and EU legally have to follow high welfare and production standards throughout the system, as opposed to relying on a single decontamination stage. This is known as a farm-to-fork approach and includes minimum allowances for space, light and ventilation in chicken housing, giving birds space to move and behave normally. Chicken houses must also be cleaned thoroughly and the litter replaced between flocks. But in the US, similar laws or regulations don’t exist. "Brussels idea of animal welfare, from a couple of weeks ago: “Undercover footage published on Thursday appears to show pig cannibalism and other serious issues at a supplier for a Nestlé-owned brand of frankfurter sold by most major supermarkets. Waitrose has suspended the pork products by bestselling French brand Herta while it investigates. Herta is being sued by campaigners for animal mistreatment and misleading consumers. The brand, which is sold in UK supermarkets, is 60% owned by Spanish food company Casa Tarradellas and 40% by Nestlé. The video footage published by French animal welfare group, L214, appears to show pig cannibalism, dead animals lying in pens, and pigs in overcrowded pens climbing over one other. In one section a sow, which appears to be struggling to stand in a narrow farrowing crate with no bedding, slips and squashes at least one piglet.” Yet you focus on theoretical supply situations from other countries. You’re a bit like our home grown climate activists who moan about lack of loft insulation, when they should all be off protesting in China and stopping them building a coal fired power station every week." All of which is horrid and band in both the U.K. and the EU Poor animal treatment is legal is the USA .

You’re a bit like our home grown climate activists who moan about lack of loft insulation, when they should all be off protesting in China and stopping them building a coal fired power station every week. All of which is horrid and band in both the U.K. and the EU Poor animal treatment is legal is the USA . " Well the EU doesn’t seem bothered about enforcing any animal welfare standards : “While the European Union (EU) is often held up as a high global benchmark for the stringency of their animal welfare laws, many EU countries appear to fall short when applying these laws on the ground. ~33 million to ~97 million hens (9%-27% of EU total) a year may have illegally remained in conventional battery cages for up to five years if additional enforcement action was not taken. ~1 million to ~2.5 million sows (8%-19% of EU total) a year may have illegally remained in individual stalls for up to seven years if additional enforcement action was not taken. ~52 million to ~116 million pigs (35%-86% of EU total) on average are being tail docked without the required alternative methods for reducing tail biting being implemented. ~1.5 billion to ~4.6 billion broiler chickens slaughtered each year (21%-66% of EU total) may be stocked at high densities without the required additional welfare conditions. Millions of Euros in EU rural development funds available for improving animal welfare goes unused or poorly used.“

"Not to mention the chlorine washed salad that we all already eat Any answer like this shows a fundamental lack of knowledge on the subject. True. We can't all be experts on every subject like yourself, it's amazing how you do it. Where did you gain your knowledge of the food industry from? He's right though and you don't need to be any form of expert to know something that has had so much media attention over the years like America's process of chlorine washing of meat and why we don't allow it and the reasons for not doing it. Frankly it's amazing people who jump into these discussions still don't know or understand the basic facts that are being discussed and say something like the chlorine salad faux pas Well maybe you can educate me. Why is salad chlorine washed and is it a good thing? Ok, lets see if you can answer it? What is the difference between a salad and meat in terms of how it is eaten? "Brussels idea of animal welfare, from a couple of weeks ago: “Undercover footage published on Thursday appears to show pig cannibalism and other serious issues at a supplier for a Nestlé-owned brand of frankfurter sold by most major supermarkets. Waitrose has suspended the pork products by bestselling French brand Herta while it investigates. Herta is being sued by campaigners for animal mistreatment and misleading consumers. The brand, which is sold in UK supermarkets, is 60% owned by Spanish food company Casa Tarradellas and 40% by Nestlé. All of which is horrid and band in both the U.K. and the EU Poor animal treatment is legal is the USA . " The uk banned sow stalls years before the EU did and even today they are in use in france, belgium and Greece as their governments are very slack on enforcing it. The US has banned all caged egg production while the EU still allows "enriched" cages. So it's not all one way.

As a food expert this should be an easy one for you " Like to see you eat raw chicken!, actually no I wouldn’t. Full fact keeps being quoted on here so I thought I’d check their take on this. U.K. 1 in 66 people get food related illness . USA 1 in 6 people get food related illness. Pretty staggering difference. Interesting quote below. When this piece was first published we referred to these levels as “acceptable levels”, which doesn’t accurately convey their purpose. We have since written a more in-depth piece about US and UK food hygiene rules, which you can read here. Under the entry for ground paprika, the enforcement level is above an “average of more than 11 rodent hairs per 25 grams”. For whole ginger the level is 3mg or more of mammal excrement per pound of product. For peanut butter it’s “30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams” and for citrus juices it’s “1 or more maggots per 250ml”. So if you have just half a maggot in your peanut butter it’s good to go.

" "Poultry and eggs remain the major source of food poisoning in the US Poultry and eggs continue to cause substantial foodborne illnesses in the United States. Findings published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that both campylobacter and salmonella enteritidis increased last year. Campylobacter– with poultry as a major source – is still the most commonly identified foodborne illness since tracking began in 2013. Incidence levels rose by 12% compared with 2015-7 baseline figures. It causes diarrhoea, sometimes bloody, and 18% of people are hospitalised. Last August, the US Food Safety and Inspection Service began using a new testing method and in a study of that method, Campylobacter was isolated from 18% of chicken carcases and 16% of chicken parts sampled. FSIS currently makes aggregated test results available and intends to update performance standards for Campylobacter contamination. The report added that the incidence of Enteritidis, the most common Salmonella subtype for which poultry and eggs are often the source, has not fallen in the past decade. Salmonella cases rose by 9% compared to 2015-7." according the CDC they are the biggest cause of foodbourne illness, given that they have a problem 10 times worse than us I'd say it's pretty obviously higher!

"I dont read all that cut and paste tech jargon anyone can do that. Every minute, 44 people – more than 23 million per year – fall sick from eating contaminated food, and an estimated 4700 per year lose their lives. This is according to a review of the most recent available data entitled “The burden of foodborne diseases in the WHO European Region”, and it represents only the tip of the iceberg: the true number of cases is unknown. These findings are presented on the occasion of the first-ever World Food Safety Day on 7 June 2019. The carcasses are so contaminated they are washed in chlorine to basically bleach them to kill off bacteria from the poor housing standards. Spare a thought for the quality of life of those animals as well as anything else. that's why I don't eat any chicken, it ain't much better here " Nice and rural here free range.

"Not to mention the chlorine washed salad that we all already eat Ok so you do know little of U.S. food standards The problem is not the chlorine fella The problem is what that chlorine is trying to cover up in the meat Chlorine is totally safe The U.S. wash their meat in it to try wash away the bacteria and infections that their poor standards allow fester in the animals poor lives" Chlorine is not safe, true it is used to kill the bugs and it has been used here on chickens for a well respected super store that is well known for it clothes.

Wow, you found cap lock. Congratulations. is that the best you have? Its never held me back in the past but i am very grateful you pointed out how to do it. You're never to old to learn. I don't really need to say anymore, it's all been said above.Ok but do try visiting the states when possible they have some great food out there. " I think Chicago full on hot dog amazing New York burger away from tourist area bloody tasty. Texan steak fabulous I admit even though not healthy. But otherwise fine dining just doesn’t exist . No just because of his irish roots shag but because it is the right thing to do Keeping to international agreements and sticking to your own word is very important in world politics. That’s frankly bollocks firstly, it’s a well known fact that Brexit was apparently about sovereignty, but those supporters were blinded by the fact that freedom comes with strings. We make deals, we have to align to foreign rules, we’ve traded one master for another, and if you cannot see that then your so far in the closet you can see Narnia.

It’s about the human race and how we create illusions to help us understand and feel safer. In the middle of the desert south of Libya there is a border! There is no such thing but because it’s drawn in a map we believe it exists . It’s like government . It’s a concept. We all agree Boris is prime minister but in the actual reality he’s just another human acting differently. We create the role in our heads . Stand next to him and see if he’s the same as you or not! If you poke him in the eye he hurts just like you . The role of PM is a concept we have created in our heads and written down to give us stability. He’s just another human. I can’t explain it as well as the writer but it’s fascinating .

"Funnily enough I deal with Europe and the US mainly every day and we are in manufacturing. Over the last 2 years we've increased our workforce by over a third, 200 to 300 and had to double our warehousing capacity. Now you can believe that or not, I don't really care" Net growth with us too. Opened new facilities in Romania, Sweden, Italy and soon Belgium. Just sadly not in the U.K. as our EU clients are demanding EU supply. Miami, Mobile Alabama , Philadelphia and Nova Scotia Canada starting to lose margin due to increasing shipping costs. They will never earn the margin we had with the EU . We’ve suspended Asian routes due to stupid increases in shipping costs .

When I go to to the shop I only buy free range chicken and eggs and i only buy Irish farm meats. Like wise how many people express concerns about chlorinated chicken etc when eating while on Holiday in the US?

Do you show the same attention to ready meals like cottage pie because that’s where the cheap shit will come in? Non labelling of pre prepared food is the critical issue. That’s the bloody point. aw so now you are saying you know for a fact we are looseing our trading standards then so what part of these negotiations are you playing a part in then ? " Look towards the food importers association. It has been a long standing aim of the big American food groups to do away with origin labels on food with specific reference to ingredients such as meats for mincing. Part of the American trade teams negotiating stance specifically references the requirement to remove origin labelling. EU regulations impose labelling and traceability of foods. As I’m not part of the American negotiating team I can’t tell you any of their closed room comments and to write your comment is childish. Of course I don’t know for a fact what is said in the discussions. I also for a fact don’t know what being shot feels like but I’m not going to give someone a gun to find out. The argument is we shouldn’t accept the discussion of lowering standards. It should not be up for negotiation. What I can tell you is I have good knowledge of how crap American food is with family food interests in the USA . So even with all the origin labelling in the world we shouldn’t allow their shit food on our dinner tables. American food is constantly in a race to the bottom both in price and additives.

And why did these US corporations pump so much cash into Brexit, if they didn't think they would get a trade deal that would work for them! This was one of the main reasons for Brexit, what makes people so confident that the government will suddenly renege on lowering all our standards for the US now.

"The only good thing about the trade deal with america now is that biden support the irish peace agreement cos of his irish roots, he said "Irish border must remain open no matter the outcome of brexit negotiations between the uk and the eu" I like the latest twist there. No just because of his irish roots shag but because it is the right thing to do Keeping to international agreements and sticking to your own word is very important in world politics. That totally fucked up bojo the clowns plans to threaten chaos and mayhem until he got his own way Boris and trumps brand of "politics" is dead " We will see what will happen, but it still gives some hope for northern ireland, which is good as well
