Jim Radcliffe (one of the most prominent and vocal Brexiteers) shifts production of his vanity project to Europe.

The Grenadier was meant to be an “All-British” replacement for the Defender; a target which seemed absurd at the time.

German engines and transmissions, Italian axles, and designed and engineered by Steyr of Austria. Now, built in France...another brexit bonus eh

It’s almost as if it’s impossible to manufacture a modern vehicle and bring it to market, without being part of a big customs union and manufacturing base

This news is 5 months old!

Ineos decided to take over the Mercedes plant at Hembach, rather than build new plants in Portugal and South Wales.

There is still plenty of spare capacity in Automotive.

Being out of the customs Union will mean more locally sourced parts and attract engineering companies to the UK. Government investment in companies so that they can produce at scale will also now be more likely. Brexit bonus

Locally sourced parts would need raw materials, raw material processing and part manufacturing. Few of which we have.

And as for government funding, that's state aid. Which would break the terms of the new trade deal with Japan.

Plus with the national debt, not sure the government will have the cash

The UK used to provide 80% of the parts used in cars manufactured in the UK but that dropped to 30% by the early 2000s but is steadily rising again. I don't think the Japanese would be too bothered as they are also investing, well they would if they are building the cars

Well no shit we don’t have iron ore mines, neither does anyone else in Europe, the vast majority of the worlds iron ore comes from Australia, China and Brazil.

We have a huge amount of very skilled and world leading part manufacturing in the UK, I’ve worked in UK manufacturing all my life and it’s very boring constantly having to correct people who reckon “we don’t make anything any more”. Yes we do.

I couldn't agree more, I also have worked in manufacturing most of my life and the parts my company produce go all over the world for a multitude of different things, they have been going over a hundred yrs and our products are well respected across the globe, so yeah people who say we make nothing any more really need to open there eyes and not believe all the shit in the media.

Granted that most that we produce is more niche, as we can never compete on price on volume work.

Which happened a lot when we were in Europe as well - Peugeot Ryton, Coventry shut in 2006, Ford Transit Southampton shut in 2013, the axe has been hanging over Vauxhall Ellesmere Port for at least twenty years.....

Yes multi nationals move where labour is cheaper and tariffs are favourable. Unfortunately Brexit is a massive own goal adding new taxes and delays to production. It will not just be the motor industry hit by this unfortunately.

Which manufacturer released an iconic British vehicle built abroad. They have a plant they took over 25 years ago that’s now 60 years old and in a state. The build quality isn’t great either
