Just a thought lived in London a few years back for a few years and it seems encouraged to be proud of where you are from... Jamaica, Ireland, New Zealand but from what ive seen the minute someone says they are proud or boast about Englishness its unacceptable?

And why the hell dont the English celebrate St Georges day properly.. Seems the general public in my opinion regard the St Georges flag as a right wing symbol which is total ballix its like saying the IRA own the Irish flag... Thoughts?

Oh aye just before someone says about well the British empire did this or that, we know this but that dosent really answer the question as anyone could give many examples from many nations on past mistakes... Thoughts?

I am not from the UK. I will never understand the seethe that some people feel about being from the UK. Yes it’s understandable that they may feel shame from the past but in some it goes beyond that. They are only happy when it rains.

This Country despite its flaws is something to be proud of. Trust me it can be a lot worse.

I love it here.

The Americas were populated long long before the British Isles you know. Surely you are not that lacking in knowledge? People lived here for thousands of years surly you are not introverted and bigoted not to realise people lived here before people arrived from Europe? It sure looks that way.

Seems you can't read though maybe I s should refer to the UK as an infantile nation as you are exiting the EU I mean it all starts with solo trading in Jan 2021.

Naaa people lived here for thousands of years only someone who is uneducated would think the nation started with the European invasion but then there are some people who are uneducated.

One issue is that the far right have taken the St George's cross as their banner.

So if you see someone waving one. You generally assume they're going to some kind of BNP/EDL/UKIP foreigners out kind of march.

As was mentioned, there's nothing wrong with appriciating the good things about where you're from, and it can foster a sense of community, IE when following national sports teams. But it gets silly sometimes and it's not good when it gets to the extent that you think you're superior for it.

Well it could be worse I could be hopelessly English.

In reality we are a mixed nation that's the best thing about here we have people from all over and have welcomed others for century's. Granted we have had idiots like Trump who wants to exclude more but that's far fewer than people realise most welcome people coming here we even put up with the English lobsters coming to the theme parks over here you can't be any more patient as a nation than that.

Pride in being English has become a bit embarrassing because of a media stereotype.

The white van man in an England football top with St. George's flag outside his house, next to his UKIP banner, yelling 'in-ger-land' at people.

It's Bollox but it has become how English pride is portrayed on comedy shows on the telly

Most of my friends are English & very proud to be

Im not sure what it would say about them if they weren't.

Most are against injustice though .

A couple are closet bigots .

I dont see many who think the Catholic St George's cross is an offensive flag at all.

Nor the Union flag

3 beatified Catholic saints ( Andrew David George) & 1 who isnt a real catholic saint ( Patrick ) who is recognised as bringing

catholicism to Ireland.

St Georges day celebrations would very much go against a protestnat nations celebrations .

Why would the Queen celebrate a Catholic as she isnt one ?

I just think patriotism is so small minded and sad.

You were born on a particular bit of the earth, and therefore you have to think your bit of earth is superior, and see people born on other bits of earth as inferior?

How about we recognise humans from everywhere are basically the same, and if we worked together the planet could be so much better.

I was glad Trump was president. While he was in office we didn't quite have the biggest bafoon in the world running our country.

Population of 300 million and those were the best two candidates? Talk about scrapping the barrel? Thank goodness for the vice president elect, at least ther'll be some integrity brought back to the office with luck after the posturing of the present incumbent who is hanging on by the fingernails in a desperate attempt to stay out of jail

"I just think patriotism is so small minded and sad.

You were born on a particular bit of the earth, and therefore you have to think your bit of earth is superior, and see people born on other bits of earth as inferior?

How about we recognise humans from everywhere are basically the same, and if we worked together the planet could be so much better.

I remember greta having trump off on Twitter when he was going on about being a patriot

And she said to achieve anything like climate change,we must work together.

What has working together got to do with being a patriot? If you actually knew the meaning of the word chances are you would probably realise that you are one too

Because she said she was an internationalist not a patriot

You can be both

Is trump both?

You'd have to ask him. But he works with other countries on some things doesn't he? So what do you think that makes him?

I'd say someone like trump was the opposite of an internationalist hence his american 1st rhetoric.

OK so I must have dreamt that the Pfizer vaccine was a joint American - German project

You are giving credit for a vaccine to the man who continually denied the existence and then dangers of corona?

And you think trump is an internationalist?"

No I'm not giving him credit but he could have stopped them working together couldn't he?

Back on topic people have a right to be patriotic.

Just as people have a right to be unpatriotic, without being told to fuck off elsewhere.

There is a fine line however between patriotism and xenophobia.

There are lots of things to be proud of in this country (ironically a lot of them ,some people have disdain for)

But there is a lot of things I dislike.

patriotism can be being proud of the things we've achieved but more than that, as Wiki describes it, it is a feeling of love and devotion and sense of attachment to a homeland and an alliance with people who share the same sentiment and values etc.

Nationalism no. Finally we agree on something

Most, but not all, of the things to be proud about this country are being dismantled or eroded by the Tories and/or Brexit.

Why do you need a ‘specific ‘ day? You can acknowledge the mistakes (past and present ) as often as you like there isn’t a minimum or maximum requirement

Most people who are critical of the British Empire, are still able to be proud that the country has the NHS, as an example.

It's the glue that holds nations together. This election proved otherwise. Being "Patriotic" this year is being painted by the media as being evil. I don't mind being evil . We truly seen evil this is not it. So I will fly my flag and hope for the best. I watched friends die for that fabric everyone want to paint as a great evil. One person's concept on life can benefit by seeing true tyranny and evil. I like knowing if there was a hint a glimpse of making someone's life better at the cost of my life and the sacrafice of others it is well worth being a "Patriot".

We from idolizing scientific achievements political achievements and humanity achievements to what are the Kardashians up to today. We will keep our patriotic pride intact to me it's for greater good.

"I am not from the UK. I will never understand the seethe that some people feel about being from the UK. Yes it’s understandable that they may feel shame from the past but in some it goes beyond that. They are only happy when it rains.

This Country despite its flaws is something to be proud of. Trust me it can be a lot worse.

I love it here. I don’t think they do feel ashamed they just like to claim they do it’s just fashionable at the moment and anyone who doesn’t see it there way are labelled a little englander I’m proud to be English and there’s fuck all wrong with that lol

I am proud to be English but it is important to celebrate what makes us great whilst acknowledging the mistakes we have made . when do we celebrate what makes us great ? What day is that then ? And how often should we acknowledge the mistakes of the past ?

Every day when I walk I celebrate the beauty all around, even on yukky days I am grateful to have been born here..

yep me too its a great country.

Like yourself I live in Suffolk and I love it here. Nowhere else I'd rather live "

"I will just sit back read your comments and shake my head. I am proud being a patriot. This thread is like beating a dead horse.

Why is it a positive thing to be patriotic?

(I'm not saying it's not, just interested in the reasoning).

I like knowing if there was a hint a glimpse of making someone's life better at the cost of my life and the sacrafice of others it is well worth being a "Patriot"."

Can we try not to conflate being British with being either English, Northern Irish, Scottish or Welsh!

We all have a nationality which is British. We clearly have a more local identity which might favour each of the Regions, but other than sport, the differentiation is largely meaningless.

I say this as a Brit who is Scottish, with. British girlfriend who is Welsh. Be proud of your local history, but remember we are all British

Love it so funny you can't stick to the topic fuck more faces than big ben. The act of someone in a failing nation bitter about it thanks for proving my point. "

Let's face it, Trump has made the US the laughing stock of the world. I would have preferred to stay in Europe but am confident that we be fine deal or no Deal. I don't see the signs of a failing nation that you talk about. Strangely I would say that although COVID has created a great deal of harm both on an economic and welfare front, as a country we have pulled together to get through and if anything patriotism has increased. I travel in Europe regularly and can tell you that without doubt most of my contacts there are more worried about the UK leaving than we are.

As for the US I fear for you with the current COVID situation. Your only chance seems to be a vaccine and more than 40% of the population don't even want it.

I have always thought of my nationality as Welsh and only questioned it when a friend pointed out that I had put Welsh instead of British on forms that I was filling in. I didnt change it though as when Im asked my nationality Welsh is what I automatically think.

I presumed the Scots Irish and English thought the same but I could be wrong.

Personally I've never understood the notions of being proud of whatever nationality you are.

We are what we are, English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, British, European, to me it's just a word.

Being proud to me relates to a feeling you have from past and current actions of your nation but every nation on earth has had good and bad aspects in their history and current actions which for me I've had no part in so I don't take credit or responsibility for the nations past or future actions.

I'm English, British and European but I don't feel any pride in any of them words.

I take pride in my daily actions and how my children grow up not on what others have done before or after me.

Tradition doesn't have to be bound to being patriotic.

But it's a good point. The army uses people's patriotism as a recruitment tool.

This is a constant theme amongst Brexit supporters, asking why non-compliant type people who express dissent to the establishment still live here. As if people who aren't happy about Brexit should leave. (Which in itself is a paradox, as we removed the freedom of movement with the EU countries).

But then what would be left? A country of people who are compliant and do what they're told, supporting the establishment no matter what the cost to themselves! Sounds bleak.

"The way this country has ffone since 2016. I M.ashamed and disgusted of this country yet you still live here ?

This is a constant theme amongst Brexit supporters, asking why non-compliant type people who express dissent to the establishment still live here. As if people who aren't happy about Brexit should leave. (Which in itself is a paradox, as we removed the freedom of movement with the EU countries).

But then what would be left? A country of people who are compliant and do what they're told, supporting the establishment no matter what the cost to themselves! Sounds bleak."

Agreed it is hard to comprehend some times. That is one of the reasons I love these posts to try and grasp the reasoning.

This section of the fab forum isn't necessarily a good cross section of British society.

It feels like it's dominated by people to jump on anyone who criticises the government.

That's certainly not the case where I live.

Patriotism - an outsider's view. Patriotism isn't about the patch of earth you're born on, or even its geographical location. It's about community spirit, whether it be for your street, your village, town, city or country. In the UK you have much to be proud of, things that many may just take for granted. You have the NHS, you have running water that won't kill you when you drink it, you have electricity in your homes for light and heat, you have the ability to march and protest when things aren't right, you have a vote to make things better. So many countries in the world don't have these things, but the UK does. Yes, the UK has much in its past and present that isn't so good - you should be mindful of these things but not ashamed. You have great community spirit - the stereotypical "queueing" is just an example of the politeness and decency the British have, as was the "blitz spirit". There are many countries that are far more racist then the UK who take so few steps to change. You don't have to wave a flag from your rooftops to be patriotic, you just have to be a good person, part of a community of good people and that's something to be proud of.

"If you didn't like being Patriotic twords your nationality welsh Scot or british. What the point of having named military units to said areas? Tradition to ones nationality ?"

This doesn't really make any sense.

I don't know who's said they don't like being patriotic but even if someone has said that I don't understand the correlation between someone not liking to be patriotic and named military units?

The Royal scots the Royal welsh units have no correlation to a proud heritage based on a different country ? If it wasn't surely it be named something else.

"I am proud to be British although sometimes ashamed of my fellow Britains.

Going back my family came from Poland/Russia and the beginning of the 20th century.

I was however brought up to be proud of being British and why I should be that has not changed.

We are an eccentric nation but overall warm and welcoming we.Less racist than the rest of Europe maybe any nation in the world. We are not perfect and never will be,we do not allways get it right but no others do.

There are a lot of anti british.english comments here these idiots should look round laugh at the stupidness of us but apreciate the wonderfull things.

Being proud to be British is not about the empire that was these comments only show a lack of intelligence and gross stupidity

The 2016 reference was to Brexit no?

As rediculous as brexit is. I don't feel ashamed or disgusted.

I just object to the idea that people who don't lie down should bugger off. But yeah fair enough I changed the point to suit something I wanted to say.

"Pride in being English has become a bit embarrassing because of a media stereotype.

The white van man in an England football top with St. George's flag outside his house, next to his UKIP banner, yelling 'in-ger-land' at people.

It's Bollox but it has become how English pride is portrayed on comedy shows on the telly "

Further to my previous post about stereotypes, have you seen the picture of Brexit Man on the Daily Mash? It's Johnson in a string vest with union flag shorts carrying a four pack of special brew and a knotted hanky on his head.
