The government paid $28 million in consultancy fees to an American guy who sells jewellery for sourcing PPE.

On what planet is that reasonable charges. Over a three month period.

That is just obscene. Two shipments were made and future planned deals included a minimum commission of £1 per item until his partner in this project fell out with him and they failed to supply. Yes on orders in the tens of millions our government signed off over a £1 per item commission.

It was his fee paid followed by an estimated second payment of $20m. How many flights and meetings do you need to justify those costs as a consultant charge?

Surely procurement weren’t that desperate to please Boris and show some PPE arriving.

Total original plan on order was in excess £200m to a jewellery trader. Just quality theft.

I’m sure there are no laws broken before you start.

Remember NHS workers were dying while our government oversaw this fiasco!

Any clothing trader like Primark would have been a better and more secure option. The supplier got his first payment but failed to deliver the full contract as agreed. But then he didn’t need to with a nice full wallet already.

Siegel is the contract holder, dealing with NHS procurement/HMG - Siegel are the company using (paying) the Spanish guy (consultant) .

So if Spanish guy is in for 28million I don’t imagine Siegel are doing all of this for the good of their health ... hence my comment that the story possibly highlights there being a much greater profit margin than the 28million ...

During the first wave of COVID a friend of mine was making scrubs for the Nhs. The correct type of fabric needed had been sourced and cut by Mulberry and these were distributed by a lady to a group of creative volunteers who made hundreds of scrubs when they were needed most. Now that is an example of what can be done by ordinary people. This government are quite unable to understand how to deal with the pandemic and have been on the back foot throughout. They have made decisions to source ppe from brokers rather than suppliers and have wasted huge amounts of money because they do not have a plan or the competence to come up with one.

I may be wrong but isn’t it the case that COBRA are supposed to have plans for this kind of thing?Does anyone remember the bitchfest about Gordon Brown stockpiling anti-SARS medication?

It wasn’t used but it was a fuck sight cheaper than doing nothing until it happens has proved to be!

Separate channel for Tory contacts revealed today. So it’s confirmed the normal procurement was intentionally bypassed. Around 500 firms with Tory contacts were put forward without vetting.

Bizarrely the records on these referrals don’t seem to have been kept.

No due diligence which is why a jeweller made killing as a middleman. Even the daily Mail is complaining.

Whatever your political views this indeed smells of corruption. At the very least exploitation of the U.K. taxpayer.

Lord Feldman who was chief fundraiser for David Cameron and involved in the “yachtgate” scandal is now providing PR services for a firm he recommended for a contract during the “dash for cash” Ppe awards - he left politics less than a month before his company was appointed to this role. Interestingly the EHRC report on labour was published on the same day as documents relating to government procurement of ppe were published which would have created a huge scandal if it had not been diverted by the press.
