I cant recall a time when as a country we were as divided as we are now.

Those divisions were laid bare by brexit.

Has it always been this way?

Is it inevitable?rich and poor. North and south.

Are other countries divided as us?

Obviously the people who voted to remain in the EU referendum and still can't accept the leave result are causing a division.

Well obviously.

We are all one happy nation before then.

I knew it'd be them! Will it be their fault if Brexit doesn't turn out well, too? (Can't think of any other reason Brexit could possibly be bad...)

Ironic isn't it as it was future leavers that couldn't accept the original result that eventually screamed and stamped their feet long enough that led to another referendum

"

I read something saying that New Zealand politics is much more level headed and normal, and putting that down to there not being any Murdoch owned media in the country.

Makes you wonder what this country could be without the Mail and Express telling everyone how awful foreigners are every day.

Exactly, can you imagine the likes of Farage accepting a 52-48 vote in favour to remain . I accepted the referendum vote as I was assured we would be getting a great deal, I can’t accept the shit show we are now left with

Amazing. A thread to talk about how divided we are, and someone leaps in to cause further division by blaming a large section of society.

To answer the OP. I believe that it's a media driven. So much of it is designed to blame eachother for everything that's wrong with the country instead of actually looking at those in charge.

Belittling leavers for Brexit is pointless. Blaming the Tories is what we all need to be doing.

It’s very hard to get the truth with our news media being controlled by vested interests.

People tend to read news they have a leaning towards already but don’t realise they are re-enforcing a bias belief with stuff that simply isn’t true.

I make a point of buying papers I don’t agree with to try and give myself a more balanced view but some articles a person can’t make a true judgement as the news presented is “SO” biased.

Million Turks heading do UK as an example. Utter shit! But they get away with it!

The BBC who would always be impartial in the past are running scared with the threats from Boris.

The way the media let Cummings off in the garden interview showed we don’t get true questioning of our people of influence.

We’re no longer a true democracy in my opinion as we don’t get the truth to help us decide and I’m not taking Brexit I’m taking about our national politics.

The EU did not exist in 1975 and we never had a referendum on it.

We did however have a referendum in 1975 on remaining in the European Communities (Common market).

I have no doubt if the EC still existed today and not the EU the UK would still be a member.

Yep the Conservative Government got the Masstricht treaty though parliament which meant the UK joined the EU.

However on 20th April 2004 PM Tony Blair declared he would let the people have the final say by holding a referendum. However he then changed his tune at the Labour party conference.

Funny how certain people blame the Conservative party for Brexit when acctually they we the party who got us in the EU in the first place and they all seem to forget the Labour party were not so keen on it.

You really need to understand the difference in a parliament vote and a referendum.

A parliament vote can not be classed as the will of the people.

Yes MPs are vote in by the people of their constituency but generally to represent them locally at Parliament.

A referendum is a nation wide vote where the people decide. That is will of the people.

Like I said if you bothered to read and understand I cant remember being that many protests about it.

However in 2009 we had the Lisbon treaty. Over 95% the same as the Masstricht but a different treaty all the same. Ireland had a referendum on it and the Irish people rejected it. The EU panicked and did some deals with Ireland and told them to have another referendum. The second one scrapped through and was accepted. After that the UK parliament was no way going to have a referendum however that then lite the flame for calls on a referendum.

So we come to your point about accepting the democratic vote of MP's. In 2015 the MPs had a vote whether to hold a EU referendum or not. 544 MPs voted in favour of the referendum.

So yes I accept they had a vote to hold a referendum and the people of the UK voted to leave. The will of the people as you quoted earlier.

This is my point, you’re expecting remain voters to accept the vote but you leave voters couldn’t accept the fact that we voted to join the EC in 1975 then a democratic government then voted to pass every treaty that lead to the current EU. Do you think the likes of Farage, Duncan Smith, Leadsom etc all accepted that we should respect the democratic votes from the past? I accept the result of the 2016 referendum but nobody (leave or remain) should accept the current shit show .

"I cant recall a time when as a country we were as divided as we are now.

Those divisions were laid bare by brexit.

Has it always been this way?

Is it inevitable?rich and poor. North and south.

Are other countries divided as us?"

I can see little evidence that we are a divided country. Most people have little interest in politics ao most of the issues discussed on here have little relevance to them. However, come election time they analyse the policies and plans of each party, probably discuss them with families and work collegues and cast their vote accordingly. The only people who think that the country is divided are those who are members of the woke brigade who do their utmost to divide the country.

The EU did not exist in 1975 and we never had a referendum on it.

We did however have a referendum in 1975 on remaining in the European Communities (Common market).

I have no doubt if the EC still existed today and not the EU the UK would still be a member.

Ok, so why didn’t you respect the referendum in 1975 to stay in the EC? Did the UK parliament vote in favour of the Maastricht treaty in 1993 ?

Yep the Conservative Government got the Masstricht treaty though parliament which meant the UK joined the EU.

However on 20th April 2004 PM Tony Blair declared he would let the people have the final say by holding a referendum. However he then changed his tune at the Labour party conference.

So you didn’t accept the democratic decision of MPs that passed the Maastricht treaty through parliament? Maybe Tony Blair was lying when he promised a referendum, I am sure you will agree that it’s not a big deal if the PM tells lies??

Well we did find out later on that Tony Blair lied about WMD didnt we.

Funny how certain people blame the Conservative party for Brexit when acctually they we the party who got us in the EU in the first place and they all seem to forget the Labour party were not so keen on it.

I also can't remember petitions, marches, legal action and anyone 4 years later moaning as much as some people on here after the Masstricht treaty went though parliament.

Yeah, but it’s ok for a PM to lie? Did you vote for Boris? Why would they moan about the Maastricht treaty being passed? A few rebel MPs didn’t accept the vote aswell as Farage, why didn’t they just accept the will of the people and democracy ?

You really need to understand the difference in a parliament vote and a referendum.

A parliament vote can not be classed as the will of the people.

Yes MPs are vote in by the people of their constituency but generally to represent them locally at Parliament.

A referendum is a nation wide vote where the people decide. That is will of the people.

Ah, my mistake, it wasn’t the ‘will of the people’ just a decision made by MPs who had been democratically voted into parliament by the people? When did you decide that the U.K. should leave the EU? And why couldn’t you and the rest of the leave voters accept the democratic vote of the MPs in Parliament?

Your missing my point, you stated that remain voters should just accept the result of the 2016 referendum despite the fact the leaders of the leave campaign refused to accept the 1975 referendum and all the subsequent votes in parliament. Why did we need to have a referendum in 2016, why could the people pushing for this just accept democracy? You voted to leave, we are leaving, it would be hypocritical of you to expect that all remain voters just accept this? Don’t you agree ?

I read something saying that New Zealand politics is much more level headed and normal, and putting that down to there not being any Murdoch owned media in the country.

Makes you wonder what this country could be without the Mail and Express telling everyone how awful foreigners are every day. "

If there's one thing we've learned from all this. Referendums are an utter failure, the media and propaganda can make people vote for anything they want them to.

Unless they can make them free and fair. There shouldn't be anymore.

i think a lot of the resentment with regards to the covid response is that you could argue that it was london and the south east high covid numbers that dragged the nation into the initial lockdown....

but now because its the north having most of the issues the tories want to keep the restrictions "local" rather the circuit break approach!

We had a referendum because parliament voted to have a referendum.

The only party and I mean the only party who voted against the referendum was the SNP 53 MP's. All other MP's from any party either voted for it 544 MP's or didn't bother to vote 49 MP's.

That is democracy.

One minute you argue for democracy when it suits you the next you are against it!

"A vote took us in ( or to be more accurate kept us in) and a vote took us out. Both were respected (eventually). In the future if there is the will another vote may again take us back in

If there's one thing we've learned from all this. Referendums are an utter failure, the media and propaganda can make people vote for anything they want them to.

Unless they can make them free and fair. There shouldn't be anymore.

so no referendum to take us back in then?"

I would not be in favour.

Firstly, most of the damage is done. We'd never be allowed back with the same privileges we've just lost.

Secondly, another referendum is unlikely to be free and fair. So could end up making things even worse again.

Thirdly, would likely divide the country further.

Are other countries divided as us?

I read something saying that New Zealand politics is much more level headed and normal, and putting that down to there not being any Murdoch owned media in the country.

Makes you wonder what this country could be without the Mail and Express telling everyone how awful foreigners are every day.

We are very bad foreigners , we take your job and women. We also buy your houses and we shit under your bridges and on the streets of Westminster. We eat British swans and take your benefits. We are devils "

As an aside the original point wasnt really supposed to be about brexit.

Personally I think the divisions were there beforehand..I think Brexit has just stripped them bare.

What has muddied the waters though,it's not even a north v south or rich v poor divide. Many working class people voted for the most right wing gmnt in years.

Perhaps that's made it even more of a mess

Has it always been this way?

Is it inevitable?rich and poor. North and south.

Are other countries divided as us?

Obviously the people who voted to remain in the EU referendum and still can't accept the leave result are causing a division.

Did you accept the EU referendum in 1975?

If you fail to understand the difference between what the EC was and what the EU is there really is no point in you posting about them.

You really need to read up on them.

I know the difference, do you know the difference between a great easy trade deal and a no deal? I will ask you again, why didn’t the people who were pushing for an EU referendum accept democracy? Why did we need to have a referendum? Can remain voters start campaigning for another referendum to re join he EU if it turns out that Brexit is a disaster?

We had a referendum because parliament voted to have a referendum.

The only party and I mean the only party who voted against the referendum was the SNP 53 MP's. All other MP's from any party either voted for it 544 MP's or didn't bother to vote 49 MP's.

That is democracy.

One minute you argue for democracy when it suits you the next you are against it!"

Again, your missing my point entirely . You says that the divide in this country was due to remain voters not accepting the result of the 2016 referendum. I disagree, the divide was caused by leave voters never accepting our membership of the EU ( that had been agreed democratically) and forced a referendum . The fact that the leaving process has been an absolute disaster and will cost the economy 100s of billions just goes to show that it was never a good idea. If you and your fellow leave voters couldn’t accept our membership of the EU can you explain why remain voters should accept the 2016 referendum result?

I'm going to use your own logic in explaining this to you.

You say the UK membership was decided democratically by Parliment.

So to hold a referendum on the EU was decided democratically by Parliment.

The people did not force the MP's to have the referendum. In fact 4/5's of MP's agreed to have referendum after they voted in favour of having one.

Like I said before, you only like democracy when it works in your point of view. Unfortunately for you it does not work that way.

"Cant see how you can compare the EC and they EU as they are completely different, the EC was purely about trade, the EU is a lot lot more.

I agree, but the UK agreed and voted on every proposal that allowed the EC to turn into the EU?

Yes they did, but they never asked the people of this country if that was there wish to join the new EU, they just signed us up even though the changes were quite considerable to say the least and ever since the maastricht treaty there have been noises for a referendum in this country.

The MPs were all democratically voted in to parliament? Are you suggesting that we should have a referendum every time parliament has to make a significant decision?

When it changes the entire countries future course and effects so many peoples day to day lives and there livelihoods then yes I think we as a country should have chance to have a say, to me thats democratic, it is essentially what Scotland are saying when they are now campaigning for a new referendum on the union is it not? Or do you believe they shud put up and shut up so to speak?"

Ah, so you are arguing that we really should have another referendum now on what should happen in January, and the current situation is 100% opposite from everything that was proposed and promised 4 years ago and at every stage since. Even at the stage of making the Withdrawal Agreement, BJ categorically denied any possibility of ending up with no trading deal. Again and again the PM has stated that it would be the easiest deal in the world and that everyone would be far better off with Brexit.

In your own words "When it changes the entire countries future course and effects so many peoples day to day lives and there livelihoods then yes I think we as a country should have chance to have a say, to me thats democratic". The brexit we are getting has no connection at all with the brexit that people voted on. So denying the people a say in this new type of brexit is denying democracy. Your own words.

Obviously the people who voted to remain in the EU referendum and still can't accept the leave result are causing a division.

Did you accept the EU referendum in 1975?

One minute you argue for democracy when it suits you the next you are against it!

Unfortunately for you it does not work that way."

Your missing the point again, the thread is about a divided nation that you stated was caused by remain voters not accepting the result of the 2016 referendum, do you standby that statement ?

Or do you believe they shud put up and shut up so to speak?

Your own words."

Actually I was debating with the other op the difference between the EC and the EU and why I thought we should of had a say at the time nothing to do with now really, although YES I guess you could say the same with our current situation, although nobody yet knows exactly what that may be. You clearly voted remain so I really don't know what sort of brexit you expected, you seem to think a lot of promises were made, I remember lots being said by both sides but not many cast iron promises that you could actually hold anyone too, personally I didn't believe a word that was said about deals and all that stuff because rationally the EU were never going to give us a deal which was the same or better, there would be no piont in joining there club if that was the case.

Your lack of understanding between the difference between the EC and the EU.

Your lack of understanding between a vote in Parliament by MPs and a referendum.

Plus there has been a lot said about leave voters being stupid and not informed enough. However you have clearly shown you have no knowledge on the history of the UKs membership into the EU and what it actually is.

Im sure the Welsh appeciate your annexation of thier country

Yeah you can add to the Welsh to that aswell.howay then Lionel it’s yr thread so how do we heel this divide then ?

Fuck knows

We have been divided for decades

The south is like a completely different country to parts of the north.aint it just I agree Lionel it’s a hard one but do you think this politics forum helps in anyway you must agree it’s mainly remainers calling leavers names that will push us further apart

Leavers have been calling remainers.. remainers for the last 3 years.ots your thread I just thought you mite have an idea how the U.K. can heel "

It can’t whilst the Tories are in charge as they thrive on causing a divide . Tbh I am not sure if any party can heal the country, I just hope once Brexit is finally ‘sorted’ we can assess the situation we are in and move in the right direction.

"I cant recall a time when as a country we were as divided as we are now.

Those divisions were laid bare by brexit.

Has it always been this way?

Is it inevitable?rich and poor. North and south.

Are other countries divided as us?

Are you refering to England as the single entity nation or the Uk as the nation and England the only nation that counts.

England.

Us and the Scots and irish have never been particularly harmonious.

I think the big positive for the north is if the torys want to stay in charge they need to deliver BIG in the north and if labour really want to get in number ten they need to promise the earth to the north so it’s a win win for us lol

I don’t know either, it also depends on who the next leader of the Torys will be, as Boris won’t be in charge for the next GE .

Let's be totally honest here. Any government would be struggling right now to deal with this shit storm.

It just so happened that Jezza handed the keys to No.10 for 5 years to Bozo just before the biggest shit storm to hit planet earth in 81 years came along. If only he'd hung on a bit longer eh. Isn't hindsight wonderful. I wish they had hung on to be honest. You have got to admit that last November Boris was well and truly on the ropes in boxing terms and ready to chuck in the towel But Nicolaaaa and Jezza let him get back up, dust himself off and deliver a knock out blow to his arch enemies. Only Nicola is still there and very wobbly as she desperately tries to spin that the SNP are better at covid than the tories.

The comparisons with sturgeon just make him look like even more of a bumbling idiot.

Various leaders around the world have been commended on their handling of the situation. I cant ever remember boris being mentioned.

I agree that any government would struggle dealing with the pandemic but the UK have the worst death rate in Europe and a leader and cabinet that just keep telling lies and making numerous U turns. Could labour have done better? We will never know but I doubt they could have been worse

You can’t argue it’s not a north vs south thing when the extra support for tier 2 doesn’t show up until London goes into tier 2.....

A lot of the north have live under those restrictions for months.....
