Cummings is getting a clean slate for £30-£50k back council tax he's not paid. Literally anyone else would be taken to court for one year's worth, how is he escaping for many years for two houses?

So a Labour Council, on advice from the independent Valuation Office, wrote off the council tax?

I'm guessing some pressure would have come from above maybe?

Or maybe they realised that any legal claim would fail?

Looks like it but if the laws been broken then should be an easy prosecution or fine. Would have thought the council would want the money and a chance to nail Cummings

The Council ran out of time to take enforcement action on the planning breaches. That may be a source of embarrassment to them.

Maybe.

Either way for someone with his rep it's not a good look.

Not that he gives a fuck like.

... and as it was only a very small number of folk in the immediate vicinity of the property who wanted to try and inflict some kind of revenge for him not breaking the law, i am sure this will also be the feeling among a large number of folk in City of Durham.

How is he getting a clean slate . ? A revaluation took place and the new charges are only effective from the date of the revision . ( this is standard practice). Are you suggesting that Dominic Cummings should be treated differently to everyone else and if so why.? In this case he was treated exactly the same as every other citizen.

Other people who build houses without planning permission are forced to demolish them.

"Other people who build houses without planning permission are forced to demolish them. "
However I think that if there was a remote possibility of enforcement action being successfull , all the Dominic Cummings haters would be on the case. Does anyone know if the permission was necessary for change of use or were the buildings concerned new builds .

It is quite easy to be caught up in re assessments and the circumstances where buildings are classified as independent or separate are not always clear.

It is quite possible that Dominic Cummings has been penalised because of his name.

The cottage he stayed in was a converted barn or cowshed. His sister and her daughters live in a new wing built adjoining the main house. Both required planning permission as it is a conservation area and there is also a covenant on the land as it was previously owned by the coal board and they have to approve any development.

There were breaches of planning regulations.

Durham County Council said no action would be taken as they were "historic", and happened outside of the time limit for enforcement. (i think this time is between 4 and 10 years depending on the type of infringement.)

Well they would tow the party line, unlike the Lambeth rate cappers. Went against a tory government, got fined and suspended from the labour party.

Because there is a three tier system, tier 1 those with no power, tier 2 those with some power, and tier 3 those with a lot of power.

A man who wields that much power will inevitably be consumed by it.

Ok yes if its gone from one council tax to three then Cummings will be paying more. So why all the fuss?

.... because it didn't result in the desired ”punishment” those who raked around wanted to cause on the Cummings
