Damning report on the Home Office

A cross-party Public Accounts Committee has just reported on the Home Office. Things they have said include:

The Home Office has "no idea" what its £400m-a-year immigration enforcement unit achieves, meaning it is unprepared for Brexit.

We are concerned that if the department does not make decisions based on evidence, it instead risks making them on anecdote, assumption and prejudice.

Officials were reliant on "disturbingly weak evidence" to assess which immigration enforcement policies worked, and why.

Officials had no idea how many people are living illegally in the UK, no idea what their impact was on the economy and public services - and no means of countering claims that could "inflame hostility".

The MPs also said the the department showed too little concern over failures. And it risked a repeat of the Windrush scandal in which people with a right to be in the UK were treated as illegal immigrants because the Home Office had lost records of their status or did not believe the evidence they provided.

It accepts the wreckage that its ignorance and the culture it has fostered caused in the Windrush scandal - but the evidence we saw shows too little intent to change, and inspires no confidence that the next such scandal isn't right around the corner.

From January, unless the UK reaches a deal with Brussels, it will no longer be part of a system that obliges EU members to take back some migrants who have no right to be in another state.

But the MPs said they had been provided with "no evidence" that the Home Office had begun discussions "internally" or with EU nations over how to prepare for the possible impact of that change.

Without putting new arrangements in place successfully, there is a real risk that EU exit will actually make it more difficult to remove foreign national offenders and those who try to enter the country illegally.

The Home Office has frighteningly little grasp of the impact of its activities in managing immigration.

When the anericans invaded Iraq they got rid of the state institutions inc The civil service nd the nation fell into civil war,chaos and destruction.

So sounds like the book is onto something there

Interesting, civil servants don’t create policy but it is their job to implement it. Given that we know that immigration benefits the country (or so the evidence says) it seems that in this case the civil servants might not be to blame.

The right pushes an anti-immigrant agenda and we have a very right wing government, and have for the last decade, that has used xenophobia and border line racism as tools to drum up support so a report that says policy is not evidence based doesn’t seem too far off the mark to me.

A very convenient argument for politicians, that.

There's definitely challenges that come with getting the civil service to deliver, but claiming it just does what it wants and politicians have no power is very flimsy.

The civil service does what its told.

I suppose there is an argument that those at the very top may have some influence..but its politicians who decide policy.

Like I said, you can say what you want it doesn’t change the reality, they have the majority, they can enact what they want when they want, they can say what they want without fear of recrimination. Whenever the opposition say something its kicked in the touch. If these Parties wanted to change the fortunes of the people in their own constiuencies, they would use what limited power they had to help physically and make their presence felt. Unfortunately they don’t because they are too busy using their mouths.

Institutional Racism. Who knew?!

While I'd admit that it's not entirely a political matter, insisting on a "hostile environment" for immigrants and the rhetoric from the leave campaign have pandered to these institutions and given them fresh energy.

While all parties are responsible for ignoring the pitfalls of how the Home Office operates, certain parties *coughs "Tories"* have reinforced this mentality. There were voices of concern that the 2014 Immigration Act could affect citizens with ties outside of the UK and we had the Windrush Scandal as a result. Immigration was a huge factor in the leave vote in 2016. Now, the last election saw a huge Conservative victory simply to "get Brexit done!"

Again, it's not entirely political but such institutions should not be ignored and definitely not encouraged.

Thatcher had a 102 seat majority and then the Poll Tax riots happened, how did that work out for her?
