I cannot believe this is happening. I was at Lichfield Proms a couple of years ago and it was an absolute hoot. Never done it before and it was so funny doing Rule Britannia in our high voices. Such a shame that people are becoming so boring.

Also Swing low to be banned. I tell you now that we were singing that way before it became an England anthem and we used to do all the actions on the rugby coach back from matches. I can still do them now. There was never any racist intent.

Another great load of bollox being pressed on us by the PC correct band. Makes my piss boil.

It's just a bullshit story that someone in Downing St has fed to the press to cause arguments and distract from the shitshow that is our government.

While people get outraged about a song - that was dropped from the tory party conference 20 years ago for being too jingoistic - they're not looking at the ongoing mess of brexit negotiations, or the mass enforced infection of kids next week.

When used as the European “anthem” it’s just the tune that’s used - no words !

“In the universal language of music, this anthem expresses the European ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity.”

I can think of so many more great tunes by British composers that could easily have been adopted - instead they chose the German tune

If you give a shit about it, one way or the other, it's a good indication you need to get your priorities straight. The whole world is going to hell in a hand-basket, after all.

Pretty Vacant by The Sex Pistols, would be way more fitting - and entertaining - than Rule Britannia, to represent what the UK has become.

More people know all the words to it - and it would actually be worth hearing a packed Albert Hall singing - IF it's ever packed again.

Anyway, sing your little hearts out - it'll help you cope with the coming shit-storm of unemployment, homelessness, mental illness and premature death the next few years will bring.

I agree makes me so angry.I hope next time there is an audience at the proms the whle audience starts to sing this and Britannia.

These are songs of joy and pride, nobody singing them I am sure ever connects them to slavery it it PC gone mad and the people getting it banned are racist and want trouble.

It therefore makes the BBC racist ahould the BBC be banned?I am very angry about this ,the minority wanted these bans are RACIST SCUM and trouble makers

Here's another source for you. I read multiple sources so that I don't fall for the bullshit that's being discussed here.

As I said yesterday, it's been put into the media to make you angry and forget that next weekend we'll be sending kids full of covid to say hello to the grandparents. Or distract you from the brexit negotiations designed to lead directly to no-deal. Or distract you from whatever corruption scandal is going to surface this week.

And it's working.

And it's working."

Absolutely, as this thread proves, working superbly!!

While people get outraged about a song - that was dropped from the tory party conference 20 years ago for being too jingoistic - they're not looking at the ongoing mess of brexit negotiations, or the mass enforced infection of kids next week.

The BBC Proms have tinkered with the format so I’m sure a meltdown would have followed regardless of The Times scoop on what the BBC were considering.

I was wondering where all the usual right wingers had gone. Nothing like a thread on the commie bbc and a debate Rule Britannia for them to show their faces. This is clearly the top one priority on this country. I’ve just seen our buffoon pm on the telly being shocked by this. I’m more shocked by him not sacking the clowns that are Williamson, Jenrick, Patel, Hancock

"

What is interesting about the programme is there will be a new arrangement of Jerusalem, and Anne Dudley has re-orchestrated “Land of hope and glory”

... and as noted the Wood Fantasia on British Sea Songs is still there

that may actually be more of a space/Social distancing thing as obvious you are either going to have to have orchestra covering more space or a smaller orchestra, and much less or no people there... so this may be compromise

The compromise will be in the audience numbers / social distancing .

"

it will also have to be the size of the orchestra..... so doing a different arrangement of it so you don't need as many musicians isn't a bad idea (unless you are a musician of course!).....

Panic over ... all is right in the world ... Sir Henry Wood Fantasia on British Sea Songs will be performed at LNOP

Anthems in style but are both known as Hymns

The EU anthem is an organisational anthem, and has no words - the tune expresses through music the anthem expresses “the European ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity.”

These forums are frantically vicious no? No need I say. What do you say? I suggest that peeps pop off to the mail/independant comments section and not post negativity and bile here, share some love and lusty stuff, it's a swing site not newsnight!!! Also, it ain't social media - hold that thought. I'm getting tweets - brb xxxxx

Tbh I take a lot of these stories with a pinch of salt.. for example the fella who had quotes from the bible on his shop..let's ignore why someone would have old testament quotes around the shop for a minute...it appears one of the quotes was about homosexuality and 'unnatural acts,'I suppose if I was gay I could see why someone could take offence at that.

Ok, I'll play along with you for a short while.... But no longer.. Is that a reason to Criminalise the shop owner? Arrest them, lock them up and throw away the key? For stating their belief? In a free society is he/she/they not able to express his/her/their opinion however misguided and inaccurate it might be without fear of violence, aggression, arrest or imprisonment. It is the ability to hold a view and indeed insult another point of view that makes for a free society - not censorship, rounding people up for expressing something you don't like - imprisoning them because they don't fit the narrative or current political fashion / dictat.

That is why - in time of economic depression - as in 1929-33 we need to keep our eyes open - for the swing to an intolerant right is the natural 'swing' (see what I did there? included a swing reference in a an informed considered and qualified way - not just shouting on the corner at busses). best, jx

Nice to see the right wingers get their knickers in a twist for a little song that we hear once a year. In the meantime, and u turn on face masks in schools. Are the Little Englanders not fed up with England having to follow the Scots’ footsteps? For the past four months, it’s been the same. The Scots decide and make decisions, and our Little England caporal follows suit a few days later. Viva SNP!!

"I cannot believe this is happening.

Makes my piss boil."

If your piss is boiling call a doctor - you may suffer severe internal damage. You may also want to ask for advice about aa proble called vox testicular - or to give it its common name, talking bollocks. Singing is off the agenda this yer at the proms becaus eof government guidelines. Swing Low is under threat at Twickers because there's something seriously unfunny about fat gammon with blood pressure problems singing a hymn fom aanother culture while doing masturbatory hand gestures. Have a good day now, and remember, it's not all about you.

These are songs of joy and pride, nobody singing them I am sure ever connects them to slavery it it PC gone mad and the people getting it banned are racist and want trouble.

It therefore makes the BBC racist ahould the BBC be banned?I am very angry about this ,the minority wanted these bans are RACIST SCUM and trouble makers"

The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland

God Save The Queen

Which is a nation. which is why it has a national anthem. The EU as far as I know is not a nation.

I think you will find that 4 countries are joined in union .

However if you want to play silly buggers

Should we decide on a

WORLD NATIONAL ANTHEM

as technically the 1st definition of nation is this

"A nation is a stable community of humans".

"

I beliee the world national anthem remains 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft' by the Carpenters.

There is no audience this year so whatever people saw/heard last year or previous ones is irrelevant. What theBBC have actually said is that’s audience participation is such a large part of the song their not sure it’ll work without them.

They are still considering playing an orchestral version but have said it’ll be back next year when the audiences are.

Bit of a nothing story really then..

Jerusalem should be Englands anthem, not that God save the Queen dirge. Which just tries to tie English identity to the monarchy, and establishment. My English heroes are Oliver Cromwell and wat Tyler who challenged the establishment head on. Oh and Robin Hood. . It’s very much a non story if the scoring is being adjusted to take account of covid19 restrictions.

The music is still being played - that’s the important part - and I guess for those who are listening/watching they may sing along if they wish.

"It's just a bullshit story that someone in Downing St has fed to the press to cause arguments and distract from the shitshow that is our government.

While people get outraged about a song - that was dropped from the tory party conference 20 years ago for being too jingoistic - they're not looking at the ongoing mess of brexit negotiations, or the mass enforced infection of kids next week.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/aug/24/seventeen-teachers-at-dundee-school-contract-covid-19"

It's a laugh when you are there. 1000s of happy people being entertained and having a good time, Kids laughing at their parents and having family time, jumping up and down and enjoying

Some people just want to ruin everyone's good time. It's just a fricking song FFS sung in a stupid high voice.

If you choose to make something of it or call people for doing it then you are trying to muzzle people from enjoying themselves at a big party. Not as if it's an illegal rave is it, or maybe it will be one day LOL if you ask me. Hey but who am I.

If you choose to make something of it or call people for doing it then you are trying to muzzle people from enjoying themselves at a big party. Not as if it's an illegal rave is it, or maybe it will be one day LOL if you ask me. Hey but who am I. you do realise that there will be nobody there to sing due to covid ? cleverly manufactured outrage to get you to look the otherway whilst the govt does something they know you wont like now the rubber boat story no longer works and the usual gullible fools fall for it "

Not sure it's even clever.

Anyone with half a brain wouldnt fall for it.

Quite amusing that of everywhere I have read about and contributed on the topic of LNOP programming, it is only on here that certain folks are brandishing this matter as some kind of government diversion tactic.

Too much time on their hands me thinks ....

"I cannot believe this is happening.

Makes my piss boil."

Can you point me to the quote from the BBC regarding the decision being made on "PC" grounds please.

All I can find is some unsubstantiated rumour from The Times...

Ironic perhaps that those feeling mist entitled to go and have a sing song about never being a slave , are most likely descendants of those who used to buy and sell them

How did you come to that conclusion. It's not a precondition to attend

They could just as easily be the descendants of those who created or discovered drugs and medical treatments that have saved millions of lives around the world.

Find me someone who’s ancestry didn’t involve slavery. I’m willing to go back as far as you need to. Why stop at the Atlantic Slave Trade? There’s plenty of other instances of one group being shitty to another group you could choose. They could just as easily be the descendants of Abolitionists, civil rights activists or suffragettes too, but let’s not get bogged down in the details shall we?

I agree, feeling proud of being British and singing songs which provide a shared identity is not shameful.

What is shameful is that this BS is detracting from real issues people are dealing with today.

we need to tell the Media to stop creating cultural wars, and politicians from playing a them and us strategy to boost their base support.

"why does the EU have its own national anthem? Just wondering as I cant think of another politcal or trading organisation that has one, only actual countries.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland

God Save The Queen

"

God Save The Queen would do; but as I said in my earlier post, Pretty Vacant would be better.

Also, although the Queen bit is temporary, it'll still be a fucking dirge when it changes to King.

Last Night of the Proms - 8pm tonight - BBC1

Remember to singalong at home

Enjoy

Land of Hope and Glory:

Land of Hope and Glory

Mother of the Free

How shall we extol thee

Who are born of thee?

Wider still, and wider

Shall thy bounds be set;

God, who made thee mighty

Make thee mightier yet!

Jerusalem:

And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England's mountain green?

And was the holy Lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here

Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,

Till we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land.

Rule Britannia:

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!

Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!

Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

When was that written? Why does it keep making a reference to Jerusalem

Great songs Jerusalem should be Englands anthem, not that God save the Queen dirge. Jerusalem, because its gods, paradise on earth, a new Jerusalem, a new utopia, its a ideal. Must get my St George's flag out for tonight,.
