David Ward, president of the Global New Car Assessment Programme, told BBC News: “US crash standards are much lower for pedestrians... we simply can’t let American vehicles into the UK if they don’t meet our standards.”

A Department for Transport spokeswoman told BBC News the government would decide its own safety regulations after Brexit.

“Road safety or environmental standards will not be diminished as part of a free trade agreement with the USA or any other country,” she said.

Seems clear to me.

Bit of a strange one this as there are already thousands of American cars in the UK already.

My brother for example has been driving various American cars for over 30 years.

American service people drive them here. Ever been to an American airbase? They all drive American cars and on UK roads as well.

Those huge American cars don't seem suited to our roads and especially the parking spaces in town. A pedestrian being hit by one of those tanks would not stand a chance. I did see in the same report that Ford confirms they will not send cars here that don't meet the regulations

Trouble is, we are not gonna have a lot of negotiating clout anymore.

I remember reading an article about the trade talks between the UK and Canada. The Canadian contingent were amazed by the UK's inability to recognise that their bargaining power outside of the EU was weakened.

Well maybe we can just tie our chlorinated chickens to the front of our Dodge Ram 350's and learn to live with it.

Oddly though - The Americans seems to have been eating it for years with no ill effects at all. And remember too that it was an EU directive not a UK one.

But there's more - Salad has been washed in the UK and Europe for years with Chlorine.

The original argument for non-chlorinated chicken was that the EU felt that because of it's ease of use as a cleaning agent in abattoirs that it 'may' lead to less stringent hygiene practices elsewhere in the facility.

So. No real argument from the EU about the safety in the use of chlorine as a cleaning agent.

(I'm a veggie btw).

Someone said our roads are not suited to them but we have roads with HGV's and double decker buses on them.!

Safety wise I see this as a non story.

However American cars have very large engines in them and I really don't see the UK public buying them on mass because of the cost of running them.

That was my understanding too as believe the EU agree the finished products (chicken) is just as safe as EU chicken but they disagree with how its done. As long as its marked when on the shelf then people can make up their own minds

That was me hun. I know we have HGV but they are not used for personal transport or parking in the supermarket car parks. I just don't think they are suited but yes as you say the running costs could also be an issue

Well, I hope we do get a good trade deal. The realities of the situation are dawning on us everyday.

Frictionless trade was promised...even with a deal, trade won't be frictionless.

No border posts in Ireland was promised..... that went out the window.

I really hope it works out the best it can. Problem is, we are never gonna be better of than we were. No outcome can achieve that. It's damage limitation now.

Most new American cars are around the same size as European ones, minis are very popular, the old idea of huge 6 litre gas guzzling wallowing hippos isnt true these days
