The amount of times I've seen that in the virus forum The last few days is unreal.

Basically If someone posts a link you dont agree with you just dismiss it as 'fake news'without any evidence?

I've noticed that too and, like all blanket dismissive posts, it can stifle proper debate.

It's certainly an unwelcome crossover from certain politicians into broader society.

"No if some one posts a clearly wrong, misinformed, blinkered, one sided link then maybe."

How do they know its clearly wrong?

If so present an fact based counter argument.

Just saying 'fake news,is hardly a reasoned conducive to a reasoned debate.

The Virus is the new Brexit with that respect.

Some people believe anything they're told without reading up on it or even reading past the headline.

Who sais it is real tho? Just because it is headline news doesnt make it so, the media likes a good story, it diverts the attention from brexit for a while too.

Well that's what's completely lacking today.

Lots of news is speculative or analysis with some kind of bias. Few people have the wherewithal to sift through the bollocks and get to the facts.

My point is this.

Of course all papers/links run stories that arent true.

But saying 'fake news'leads to a situation where you see something that doesn't confirm to your beliefs you dismiss it as fake news.

And you end up in a trump like situation.

Always try to go to the actual data.

Use news outlets to alert you to a report or event. Then go to the actual source. IE. A story about the WHO. Ignore what the newspaper says and go and see what the WHO are actually saying.

There's a whole world of difference though between a link containing auditable factual information and links that do not.

Dismissing the former as fake news is blind stupidity, dismissing the latter is not, that's just common sense

I never open any links posted on here period!

And I am smart enough to know that a swinging site is probably not the best place to get accurate scientific facts.

I am also very cynical and don't believe or trust pretty much 99% or what I read or hear.

Dumb donny trump and idiot fox news reporters. Thats the definition of fake news. None of them should be allowed to speak to the people anywhere at any time. The fox news network should be known as the nonsense news network, and should be shown on the Comedy Channel just for laughs. Hand job hannity is the clown of the fake news network known as fox.

More and more fake fact checking sites appearing making it harder to confirm many news sources, a lot more digging is required these days.

Of course depending on your bias depends on how much digging your prepared to do.

The burden of proof lies with the person who writes the articles. Believing or not believing is entirely upto the readers.

Most news articles these days have partial truth mixed with some misinformation along with some hyperbole that excites their target audience. Both right and left wing media are guilty of it. Obviously people on the political right call left wing papers bullshit by pointing out their lies while left wing people point out the lies by right wing media and call them fake news.

For newspapers, nothing matters as long as people read their shit and they make money.

I think there are still a lot of decent journalists. They just dont bring the ratings as much so get put on a lower pedestal.

On the right, Fox news as an example had Shep Smith (until Trump got him out), they still have Bret Baier and Chris Wallace.

Although I may not agree with everything they believe, neither show bias towards either side that I've ever seen.

For both Republicans and Democrats, I also look to progressives to shine a light on the bs from both sides.

I was completely conservative until I started doing enough of my own research and I although there's still a lot of bs (weirdly I find the ex Republican hosts the most corrupt on CNN) I now sit with the Democrats (and some progressives).

Haha no.

I only really use news paper to alert me of something that's going on. Then seek out the source material.

For example the Independent had the headline: "UK by far the biggest enabler of global corporate tax dodging, groundbreaking research finds".

I didn't bother reading their spin or opinions. I just went to the Tax Justice Network, to read the report myself.

Not sure how many others there are.

Is there a reason why this is the case?

It's got a few left of centre columnists (Brian reader,Kevin Maguire etc) used to a half decent paper back in the day and was traditionally quite left leaning.

Exactly. This is the best we could do. Newspapers are just businesses in the end. They want to make money. They write stuff which their regular readers "want" to read. They just have to keep re-inforcing your existing views.

In the end, you have to do some research yourself if you need to get some facts.

The TV version of the daily mail.

Fox has had some Democratic guests on recently and Trump says something is wrong with Fox and to watch OAN.

https://factcheck.afp.com is a website devoted to debunking fake news. This site should come to mind, before you post yet-another-FB/T/I vid and treating iit as verbatim.

There is a video link of two white cops approaching a Black Sudanese/American. They refuse to believe him as not being the guy, they are looking for. He gets upset and then he gets cuffed.

After they search him and pull out the ID from his pocket...

Go watch the video yourself...

https://youtu.be/MOyrbMa7OE8

If fake, then this is bad news.

If real, then this is bad news too.

If it's a training video, used to prevent cops being jerks: then it's great news and labeled as such.

surely if someone posts the above it's better to debunk it with the correct information to counter it rather than dismiss it as "fake news " .? or is that part of the problem you cannot do that but disagree with what's posted anyway so just choose the lazy option
