Amazing walking trails in the west if you’re fit and like a challenge or nature reserves in south, party town and tourists (in the ‘day’) in Queenstown and decent skiing and boarding if it’s your thing. What you looking for that you didn’t find before?" I like exploring out of the way places and seeing things that are not so well known, such as Clay Cliffs near Omarama and Elephant Rocks near Duntroon. | |||

"Seeing Bethell's Beach and Piha mentioned, I want to draw attention to a beach I favour over these two: Karekare. And if you are into hiking, I recommend a walk between Whatipu (at the entrance of Manukau Harbour) and Karekare along the coast (watch the tides!) and retour via the ridge track. Great scenery!" Just googled it and wow! The photos on the website look gorgeous. Tunnel Beach is reasonably local to me and is a definite go-see here. | |||

"Te Anau and the glow worm caves. I went there on the boat late one moonlit night. The moonlight was illuminating the snowy hills. It was quite perfect. "I did the boat trip to the glow worm caves in Te Anau when I was backpacking then ended up in The Moose bar later and our tour guide for the glow worms sang Taking it Easy by The Eagles. He had an amazing voice. Great memories | |||

I did the boat trip to the glow worm caves in Te Anau when I was backpacking then ended up in The Moose bar later and our tour guide for the glow worms sang Taking it Easy by The Eagles. He had an amazing voice. Great memories

" I saw Doubtful Sound a couple of years back from a small helicopter piloted by a guy who used to be based on The Calypso ( Jaques Cousteau) he landed us in a tiny little cove! It was stunning. As was a beautiful blue Tarn up in the mountains. Punakkaki Rocks is another stunning site I love New Zealand  | |||

Unforgettable, now I've recalled the journey. Had a nice swim in a geothermal swimming pool at a campsite after the Taumarunui end of Highway 43. Went to NZ two years in a row. Second time because the Top Ten campsite card lasted two years (smart move by someone in tourism). The second time we spent the entire trip in the North Island which is probably to my mind the more interesting, even though I loved the scenery in the south. If I ever go back, the North Island will keep me more than happy. NZ is a fantastic country, not least due to the low population level, and I wish I had visited there and maybe settled when younger but was tied to a job that I would have been stupid to lose. Luckily one of the many job benefits was early retirement at 52 so I still got to see the islands before I got too old. One highlight of my visit to the South Island was a quite by chance un-booked flight in a Tiger Moth biplane at Mandeville airfield. This was very significant to me as my surprise homage to my late father who put in nearly 1000 hours (they were up from dawn until dusk every day) on type, teaching recruits to fly, for several years AFTER doing his bit as a Spitfire pilot in the Battle of Britain. We just saw the 'Pleasure Flights' sign while passing down that particular not unduly scenic highway and went for it. I will never forget the young pilot lifting the tail over his shoulder in order to pull the plane from the hangar to the apron! A friend of mine probably topped that by getting flown to Milford Sound by the owner of a B and B where they had stopped for a night! Frank | |||

" Thanks. indeed so but I'm 10 years older and not much money left! spending a lot of time persuading friends to make the trip as I know they won't regret it. We didn't plump for the obvious camper van choice but instead rented old Toyota cars each time from Ace rentals at Auckland airport and stayed at B and Bs and in chalets on campsites. Never disappointed. After I posted the previous missive I set myself the task of looking up the pilot's name which was stored too deep in my brain. After 2 hours of googling I found him on the list of instructors at, guess where, Taumarunui, at the end of Highway 43 where I completely missed not just yet another but the major Tiger Moth aerodrome! "Here’s another one to dream of when you can travel again... hiking the Milford Track - 5 days 4 nights stunning scenery and hope for a clear day when you hike up over the pass. "I have never hiked the Milford Track, but would like to. I would also love to do the Tongariro Crossing. I have hiked some of the Abel Tasman and kayaked the rest - very beautiful. | |||

"I've never been to the Mount, but do fully intend to. The Coromdel is stunning. As for pig hunting I hoped to go at a farm I stayed at on the East Cape, but they went on horses and I was not a good enough rider. Instead I got to shoot and pluck possums. " I went on foot it was exhausting to be honest, up and down valleys abs through rivers, the dogs go so fast and you have to keep up. We were gone 3 days and slept in huts in the wood, then had to carry the boar back through all the woods I was totally knackered afterwards! | |||

North Island Gisbon for the sunrise on new years eve West Auckland beaches, 90 mile beach (bay of islands), Taupo skydiving on a clear day you can see coast to coast, Rotarua for the culture aspect South Island Wellington, it's the Capital, Wanaka is stunning, Queenstown the party town, Kaikora was beautiful in a way I enjoyed, Duniden is the student town. They have some great festivals and of course rugby games are great over there. " So that nobody won't get confused with their itinerary: Wellington is on the south coast of the North Island | |||

My birdlife ambition is to befriend or even see a kakapo. Loved em since I first heard about them in the 70s but I've only ever seen a stuffed one. | |||
